In zijn hart is hij geen bankier, zegt een studievriend, maar een leraar. OP HET TWEEDE GEZICHT Klaas Knot Flik Klaas Knot, de president van De Nederlandsche Bank, geen kunstje. Dat ondervonden leden van de Groningse studentenvolleybalclub, waarvan hij penningmeester was. Van spelers die met een contributieachterstand de benen hadden genomen, achterhaalde hij het adres om hen vervolgens met aanmaningen te bestoken tot ze hadden betaald. 'Hij is fanatiek in alles wat hij doet', zegt zijn studiegenoot Nico Mensink, Knots beste kameraad. Aanstaande donderdag presenteert Knot zijn zesde jaarverslag. Hij zal zeggen dat Nederland er goed voorstaat, maar dat er nog veel werk aan de winkel is. Knot zal de onderhandelaars in de kabinetsformatie aansporen tot resolute daden. De hypotheekrenteaftrek zal verder moeten worden versoberd, hervormingen van de arbeidsmarkt en het pensioenstelsel zijn onvermijdelijk, de economie moet worden verduurzaamd. Het overschot van drie miljard euro dat Rutte II achterlaat, moet niet wild worden uitgegeven. Knot zal pleiten een buffer aan te leggen opdat Nederland bij een volgende recessie niet hoeft te bezuinigen of in elk geval minder ingrijpend.

    PRESS RELEASE HJ SCHOO LECTURE KLAAS KNOT 1.09.2020 Strengthening the monetary union to help Europe emerge from the coronavirus crisis The European Union can emerge stronger from the current corona crisis if its members are prepared to work together to put an end to the growth divergences within the monetary union. This was one of the points made by Klaas Knot, President of De Nederlandsche Bank this Tuesday, during the twelfth annual Schoo lecture which he gave in Amsterdam. The HJ Schoo lecture is organised by weekly current affairs magazine Elsevier and marks the start of the political year. In his lecture, Knot outlined how much the Netherlands and other EU Member States benefit from European cooperation. The annual benefits of single market membership for the Netherlands have been calculated at between EUR 6,000 and EUR 10,000 per household. “Even when we take into account the Dutch contribution to the EU budget, there are still substantial welfare gains for the Netherlands.” said Knot, “In other words, in the Netherlands we have the European single market to thank for a big piece of our pie.” At the same time, President Knot drew attention to economic growth divergences within the EU. For example, stronger economies have benefited from the elimination of exchange rates through the introduction of the euro, while it has been a relative burden on weaker economies. Consequently, There is a growing divide between stronger and weaker economies. Knot also cited imbalances within countries: businesses have benefited more than households from the single market, the euro, and international free trade.

    I. VIEWS ON THE COVID-19 CRISIS IMPACTS Issues at stake We are experiencing with the Covid-19 pandemic an unprecedented crisis, pushing the global economy into the worst recession since the Great Depression. Central Banks and governments have taken a wide range of measures to sustain the supply of credit to the real economy, support financial intermediation, and preserve the resilience of the global financial system. But this exogenous shock is placing the financial system under considerable strain. The Covid-19 outbreak is however more a powerful amplification factor of a latent debt crisis rather than a cause in itself of the current situation. Indeed, lasting zero – and even negative – interest rates have allowed businesses, States and leveraged investors to take on unreasonable debts, making them vulnerable to deteriorating economic and market conditions. The resulting excess liquidity in the financial system has generated bubbles of financial assets and their bursting, thus further weakening the financial system and hampering economic recovery. Strong policy responses and international cooperation are required to tackle the unprecedented health, monetary, economic, and financial stability challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Fiscal discipline and solidarity will be needed in the euro zone, where the heterogeneity of deficits and public debt, and therefore of tax margins, is particularly marked. He highlighted how longer-term changes in the global economy pose important challenges for central banks’ ability to control inflation. Some of these challenges affect all central banks, while others are specific to the institutional context in which the ECB operates. This despite unprecedented conventional and unconventional monetary easing and five years of economic expansion. Moreover, market-based indicators of long-term inflation expectations in the euro area have fallen, fueling concerns that the anchoring of inflation expectations may have weakened. Against the backdrop of a weakening global economy and heightened geopolitical risks, these concerns prompted the ECB to take further measures to boost inflation at its September meeting.
