Cherry Hill, NJ (February 11, 2019) – Paul Dilks, former Congressional Candidate for the First Congressional District in New Jersey after making his return to local radio on February 4th on WNJC 1360 Monday – Friday afternoons from 3:00 – 6:00, decided to incorporate into his program a “Veteran of the Day” during the 4:00 hour. Paul has been involved in Veteran causes since his time on the radio a few years ago. “We owe our veterans so much as they may be asked to put their lives in harm’s way at any time to protect the freedoms we have as Americans. “ Paul explained. “I have become friends with many of the members of the Glassboro VFW and honoring them and other veterans just seemed like the right thing to do.” Also within the segment Paul will be honoring one Purple Heart recipient each week. He will be asking each honoree for a few songs from Paul’s play list that may have got them through their time of service or favorite songs of their youth. Paul is asking for nominees of veterans from his listening audience. Honoring a veteran each day allows us to honor well over 200 per year and Paul would like to have input from his audience. If you know a veteran you would like to honor, email Paul at [email protected] . He has been playing music of the 50s, 60s, 70s for now more than 5 years at WNJC 1360. For many years as a morning radio personality, but now has made the transition to entertaining his audience in the afternoon as Paul says it…”Your afternoon drive just got a whole lot better.” “We are not significantly changing the format of what made the show successful in the past”, said Paul Dilks. “It is mostly about the music. Paul will be featuring the Great American Songbook and the greatest Pop hits of all time. You will hear Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat “King” Cole, Peggy Lee, Johnny Mathis, Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Rosemary Clooney, Sammy Davis Jr and more. You'll also enjoy newer generations of gifted artists, lending their unique talents to these classic songs, in admiration and appreciation of those who paved their way. You'll hear Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jr, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Cole, and many others.” Every day Paul asks his listening audience to embark on a journey and take a stroll down memory lane to those days in your life when life just seemed simpler. Listeners will enjoy pop hits from Dionne Warwick, Engelbert Humperdinck, Glen Campbell, The Carpenters, Neil Diamond, The Fifth Dimension, Barry Manilow, and Jackie Wilson. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

Links and descriptions are listed below. We hope you are enjoying these carefully selected films. Having an opportunity to see new-release films of high quality is something we are very pleased to offer the community during this time when going to the movie theater is just not possible. We will continue to share news of new-releases, as they come available to us. We hope you enjoy! Ella: Just One of Those Things Ella Fitzgerald was a 15 year-old street kid when she won a talent contest in 1934 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Within months she was a star. “Ella: Just One of Those Things” follows her extraordinary journey over six decades as her sublime voice transforms the tragedies of her own life and the troubles of her times into joy. The film uses never-before-seen images and unheard interviews to bring Ella Fitzgerald to life and to tell the story of her music – a black woman who makes her career in the face of horrifying racism. View the trailer for Ella: Just One of Those Things Here is an Ella the world never knew – tough, thoughtful, funny, a dazzling musical innovator. The film also uncovers Ella’s commitment to the battle for Civil Rights; and it explores the conflicts that always haunted this intensely private woman: the struggle to reconcile her hunger for adoring audiences with her longing for a domestic life with her husband and son.

Volume 2 Issue 1 February 2019 “I had formed most of my ingenious acquaintances into a club for mental improvement called the Junto” Cover Story The Junto February 2019 A line from the world’s most famous love story seemed fitting for our Love Edition. Ro- meo and Juliet reminds us that life is short and you have to take the time to love and to live when the opportunity is given because you never know how long it might last. Don’t let other people get in your way and don’t try and fake your death. It won’t end well. 1 People The Junto February 2019 How To Love Yourself Ally Fuller - Copy Editor Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is most often associated with romance, love, and devoting our atten- tion to the special people in our lives whether that be a significant other, a friend, or a family member. Normally, we take this day to spend time with these people and shower them with gifts, but the one per- son we tend to overlook on this day is ourselves. This is understandable because we have been raised to put the needs of others above the needs of our own, and we’ve been told time and time again that if we do take time for ourselves, it is selfish. However, many studies done in recent years show that incor- porating self-love into your life is critical to maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health. In fact, having more self-love is imperative for anyone looking to lead a happy, healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.

  • Soul Survivor by Steve Dale
Still performing and still in demand, the years have been good to Smokey Robinson. Soul Survivor by Steve Dale It's 1958: A 17-year old songwriter from Detroit named Smokey Robinson, and his high school chums, who call themselves The Miracles, release the first record ever on a new label called Motown. The song is called "Get a Job." It's not a hit record, but it sure proves important. "Get a Job" turns out to be a prophetic title, since it helps to create work, and a whole direction for Motown founder and President Berry Gordy. Before long the Motown label provides work for the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Vandellas, Pips, and all the others. Meanwhile, The Miracles record hit records. In 1972 Robinson leaves the group to work behind the scenes for Gordy at Motown, and to embark on a solo career. He has never stopped touring, at least not for very long. It seems that audiences can't get enough of Smokey Robinson. Before a recent appearance at the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville, IN, Robinson talks with Steve Dale on the phone from his Motown office in Los Angeles. Steve Oale: You're a survivor. Still per- from your days with The Miracles. Mean- forming, still in demand... while, they bring their children who expect so: You don't even know if Dylan ever groomed his image for years, and he stuck Smokey Robinson: Yeah. Isn't that nice? to hear you croon "Being With You" and really said it? with it. Even at 8 or 10 years old he pre- And thank God.

  • IA Portrait of the Artist As a Young Woman
The League of Extraordinary Women. Part I A Portrait of The Artist as A Young Woman. Alan Berg Erev Rosh Hashanah 5781 Ann and I don’t interact very often. When we do, it’s noteworthy. Maybe two to three hundred words a year. Six months ago, I sent a text to Ann with a recording from 1964 by a British woman, a Jewish woman. Helen Shapiro. She was a teenager, 17 at the time, in 1964. Just a few months before, in concerts, the Beatles were her opening act. Helen Shapiro’s song, that I forwarded to Ann, was the lyrical Shop Around, written by Smokey Robinson. A classic among Motown classics. Why wouldn’t Helen Shapiro be the headliner in England, above the Beatles? Helen Kate Shapiro was born in London in ’46. The granddaughter of displaced Russian Jews, Her parents piece workers in the garment trade. She attended Lea Bridge Road Synagogue. Post war working class, there was no record player in her home, she played a small banjo. At age ten, she had a band with Mark Bolan who would be known as T-Rex, as her lead guitarist. At 13 she started singing lessons, soon recorded a demo of Birth of The Blues, a song from 1926, And was signed by Columbia Records. She’s seventy-three years old today. In 1961. at age fourteen Helen Shapiro had a number 3 UK hit with her first song. Don’t Treat Me Like A Child. And the same year, two number one songs, You Don’t Know and Walkin’ Back To Happiness.
