Laney School of Graduate Studies of Emory University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts 2014 ABSTRACT Axe to Grind: A Cultural History of Black Women Musicians on the Acoustic and Electric Guitar in the United States By Mashadi Ione Matabane Though readily recognized as vocalists in American popular culture, black women are generally overlooked as instrumentalists on the acoustic guitar and its more iconic counterpart—the electric guitar. Cultural scholars and writers routinely ignore black women electric guitarists’ creative and innovative contributions to the blues, gospel, jazz, and rock of which the instrument is an essential element. This research study documents and explores black women’s experiences playing the guitar as creative enterprise and as a means to redefining their roles in life and self-identity beyond racial and gender limitations imposed by the broader society. Black women have a long record as professional and amateur guitarists from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. They have used acoustic and electric guitars to shape and transform their lives for social mobility, entertainment, artistry, recreation, and evangelizing. This study analyzed oral history narratives of contemporary black women musicians discussing how they use the electric guitar in the construction, negotiation, and representation of their identity, self expression, and musicality. Racism and sexism render black women musician's identities as hypervisible and invisible. Still, they employ the electric guitar as a source of distinction, personal achievement, employment, spiritual- and self-expression, and physical and emotional self-defense. As musicians they challenge dominant social meanings and fantasies about the electric guitar as a culturally white and masculine enterprise; demonstrate creative possibilities valuable to the politics of location specific to black women in the United States; and critique popular (often narrow, pathologized) representations of the black female body. Playing electric guitar is typically represented as a masculine activity in popular culture, functioning as a signifier of male sexuality and virility. Yet women, including black women, play the instrument and have a long cultural presence of playing it in blues (Lizzie “Memphis Minnie” Douglas), gospel (Sister Rosetta Tharpe), and rock (Peggy “Lady Bo” Jones). Black women guitarists as instrumentalists are often overlooked in popular culture writings and research where the focus remains on black women as solo vocalists and back up singers. This dissertation explores black women and their engagement with the electric guitar to construct and negotiate their self-presentations, identities, and cultural expressions as musicians. Mainstream contemporary American culture clearly privileges men as the great guitar players and elevates them as the primary creators of rock (usually white men), blues (usually black men), and jazz (usually black and white men). In the 1930s, the electric guitar began to flourish in jazz and, later in the 1940s and 1950s, in blues and rock, respectively. Southern

    BO DIDDLEY’S UNCONVENTIONAL 1950’s SOUND AND ITS ANTICIPATION OF HIP HOP OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How were Bo Diddley’s recordings an anomaly in relation to 1950s Pop music, and how is his rhythm-driven sound and self-presentation a precursor to Hip Hop style? OVERVIEW From his first appearance on the Billboard R&B chart in 1955 and continuing over his five- decade career, Bo Diddley has been celebrated for the rhythm-driven, percussive sound of his ensemble, at the center of which was Diddley’s guitar playing. If by the Rock era the guitar solo became a symbolic centerpiece in recordings and performances, Diddley’s emphasis was always on the rhythm guitar. His approach didn’t revolve around the single- and double-note leads that came to dominate the music. Instead, Bo Diddley pioneered a sound that involved every member of his combo playing with a percussive sensibility. Rhythm was emphasized over melody, with a vocal style that often approximated Rap set against that rhythmic backdrop. Earlier even than James Brown, Diddley inadvertently pointed to a Hip Hop future. His best-known rhythm guitar pattern (three strokes/rest/two strokes, or “shave and a haircut, two bits”) influenced many. The “Bo Diddley beat,” as it came to be known, appeared on records by Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, U2, rapper B.o.B., and many others.     James Hepokoski Spring 2009 Music 458: Ives, Blues, Porter Visions of America: Competing concepts of musical style and purpose in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. We examine some stylistic and cultural bases of both “art” and “popular” music and their often uneasy interrelationships. This is neither a survey course nor one concerned with mastering a body of facts. Nor is it preoccupied with coming to aesthetic value judgments. Instead, it is a course in applying critical thinking and analysis to some familiar musical styles basic to the American experience: asking hard questions of differing early- and mid-twentieth-century repertories. Areas to be examined include: 1) Ives (selected songs, Concord Sonata, Second Symphony); 2) early blues (Bessie Smith, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, and others), including samples of African-American recorded precedents and related genres; 3) Broadway and popular song—including a brief look at Jerome Kern (selected numbers from Show Boat) followed by a closer study of Cole Porter (Anything Goes). Some main questions to be faced are: What aesthetic/contextual/analytical tools do we need to think more deeply about differing pieces of music that spring from or respond to markedly differing/diverse American subcultures? What are our presuppositions in listening to any of these musics, and to what extent might we profit by examining these presuppositions critically? The course will also make use of resources in Yale’s music collection—most notably the Charles Ives Papers and The Cole Porter Collection. We shall also be concerned with original recordings from the 1920s and 1930s.

By now the reissue market was beginning to take shape and a surprising amount of small, obscure, labels came and went having made productions which in themselves have become rarities - such as the EPs produced by Pirate Records in Sweden and the Natchez label in Argentina. Yet despite the concerns towards the uncertain viability of the reissue market both by the majors and independents, two independent labels began to take form in the late 1960's leading the way and taking a more permanent foothold. One was what began as Belzona which then became Yazoo following the first few titles. Based in New York, this outstanding and imaginative label was headed by the late Nick Perls and is now part of the Shanachie organisation. A more unlikely setting for a successful Blues reissue label was Vienna, Austria. Yet, here was the birthplace of the Roots label established by Johnny and his second wife Evelyn Parth which would also eventually metamorphose into another entity Document Records. In the mid fifties, Jazz enthusiast Johnny Parth (pronounced "Part") created two record labels; Jazz Perspective and Hot CIL De Vienne. Productions on both labels were released in small quantities, sometimes as little as twenty or thirty copies at a time, manufactured with hand printed covers. These were so locally to the budding fans of Jazz. Seventeen LPs were produced on the Jazz Perspective label. There was also an eleven volume box set which illustrated the history of Jazz. "We called it 'The Coffin" Johnny remembered "because it was a huge black box with gold lettering on it." In addition, a three LP box set outlining blues music was produced on Jazz Perspective.
