We tested the hypothesis that a long-term evolutionary association led P. iheringi to choose very specific wing locations to infest the great fruit-eating bats,Artibeus lituratus. Seven anatomical wing regions and the uropatagium from 140 bats were analyzed and a total of 78 parasites were collected. Periglischrus iheringi had a significant preference for the plagiopatagium and dactylopatgium major wing regions (i.e., large, proximal regions) and infestation was directly correlated to area (r=0.9744). However, other factors may also influence mite choice, such as higher and more stable temperature and humidity, vascularization and lower risk of displacement. Altogether 33 species of eight parasitic families of tleas (Ischnopsyllidae), batflies (Nycteribiidae), bugs (Cimicidae), mites (Spinturnicidae, Macronyssidae, Trom- biculidae, Sarcoptidae) and ticks (Argasidae, Ixodidae) were found. RESUMEN La dieta es un factor ecológico que explica la diversidad del tamaño del encéfalo en vertebrados. Estudios en murciélagos filostómidos (la familia de mamíferos con mayor diversidad trófica) sugieren que el encéfalo de las especies frugívoras es comparativamente mayor que el de las especies de otros gremios tróficos. Sin embargo, estudios más recientes muestran que al menos el 73% de los filostómidos son omnívoros y presentan gran variación en la proporción y composición de los ítems vegetales y animales que consumen. Agrupar a las especies en gremios discretos y usar un único gremio para los distintos tipos de omnivoría puede no reflejar adecuadamente la complejidad trófica de los filostómidos. Por esta razón, la relación evolutiva entre la dieta y el tamaño del encéfalo en la mayor radiación de murciélagos neotropicales continúa siendo un misterio. En este estudio se evalúa esta relación evolutiva en 124 especies de filostómidos, utilizando tres aproximaciones a la dieta de las especies que consideran la posición trófica, los óptimos adaptativos de esta variable y distintos tipos de omnivoría. Además, se examina por primera vez la relación entre la dieta y el tamaño relativo de varias estructuras encefálicas. Las especies mayoritariamente y estrictamente herbívoras tienen encéfalos y estructuras encefálicas relacionadas con la memoria espacial y la olfacción proporcionalmente más grandes que las especies animalívoras. En estas últimas, algunas estructuras encefálicas responsables de procesar señales visuales y auditivas son proporcionalmente más grandes que en las primeras. -

Corresponding author٭ The broad-nosed bat, Platyrrhinus ismaeli, is listed as Near Threatened (NT) by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and due to the low number of collected specimens, its geographic distribution is poorly known. This study presents the first documented record of this species in the eastern slope of the Colombian Central range. Herein, museum voucher specimens were used as primary sources for the elaboration of a checklist of Platyrrhinus ismaeli from Colombia. In addition, the checklist is supplemented with information on life zones and a potential distribution model for Colombia. This distribution map was used to explore the affinities, in species composition, among Colombian ecoregions as outlined by, and the relationship between associated environmental variables. In total, 15 field-based occurrence points and 20 environmental variables (19 bioclimatic and one topographic) were used to model the potential distribution area. The response curves showed that this species prefers habitats with an annual temperature of 12.0 to 25.5 °C, annual precipitation of 1,000 to 4,000 mm, and an elevation range of 1,200 to 2,850 masl.
