Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community. -

But no practice, custom, or Old Wives Warning is so firmly adhered to as ‘The Turning of the Key’. Every year, on the last night of winter, as the first day of spring unfolds, the townsfolk gather to take part in a strange ritual. They meet in the centre of the town square, where a statue bearing the likeness of a young girl stands, poised and still, one hand raised as if to toast the sky. Constance has stood in the square for as long as any can remember. And she is never more lifelike than tonight. AccessHE – UKADIA Creative HE Possibly more now than ever before in history, the creative arts have a fundamental part to play in our development and survival as human beings. In an increasingly digital age, where AI and robotics have made life easier, in many respects we are in danger of becoming culturally poorer and disconnected from each other. We are challenged to ask ourselves ‘what makes us human?’ and what differentiates the human from the digital experience. We care, we play, we seek meaning and we are creative and we need to nurture our future creative talent because it is in this future that creativity will be the single most valuable commodity in both the arts and industry. One will no longer be separated from the other because the world needs creative solutions to the problems we all face. At a time when the place of the creative arts in the English school curriculum is less than assured, it is essential that the future workforce has the chance to engage with these disciplines and understands the full breadth of available options when it comes to studying a creative subject at HE level. With this guide, a joint resource developed by AccessHE and the UK Arts and Design Institutions Association, we hope to capture the richness and variety of creative courses on offer at HE providers in England, and give advice to prospective students considering further study in these areas. We are a musical theatre school who train students from the age of 3 in all areas of performing arts. Many of our students have gone on to professional careers in the arts and lots have gained professional work through our agency while a student at Platform. We value our students as individuals and genuinely care about every student. We have an outstanding team of teachers who are committed to supporting and pushing students to reach their full potential. We have worked hard to create a school where our staff and students value themselves and each other. We push for excellence both in training and in our pastoral care and are incredibly proud of all of our students past and present. Each student is special and unique and we value this. It is a testament to our team that Platform students remain a part of our Platform family even after they graduate. I couldn’t imagine my life without it as it has now become like a family to me! - Maisy (Platform Student) Meet The Team Tracey Eley Principal Tracey trained at Italia Conti Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Upon graduating she opened Platform YP. Platform is a huge part of Tracey’s life and she is extremely passionate about her students. As Platform Principal she has directed well over 200 performances at venues including The Whitty Theatre, The London Palladium, Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Vaults. She has, with her students, recorded at Angel Studios, Lakeside Studio and with Platform released an album on Apple Music.
