Nevertheless, there is no unied approach that relates these elements to the discrete samples of digitized sound. In this article, each musical element is related by equations and algorithms to the discrete-time samples of sounds, and each of these relations are implemented in scripts within a soware toolbox, referred to as MASS (Music and Audio in Sample Sequences). e fundamental element, the musical note with duration, volume, pitch and timbre, is related quantitatively to characteristics of the digital signal. Internal variations of a note, such as tremolos, vibratos and spectral uctuations, are also considered, which enables the synthesis of notes inspired by real instruments and new sonorities. With this representation of notes, resources are provided for the generation of higher scale musical structures, such as rhythmic meter, pitch intervals and cycles. is framework enables precise and trustful scientic experiments, data sonication and is useful for education and art. e ecacy of MASS is conrmed by the synthesis of small musical pieces using basic notes, elaborated notes and notes in music, which reects the organization of the toolbox and thus of this article. In the developed world the effect of the growth of cities has often only been considered late in the day. This paper sets out future development scenarios for cities and urban areas, in developed and developing countries, and looks at the potential impact on soundscape. An evolving toolkit for city design is discussed. Proposals are made for great- er protection of humans, wildlife and tranquil areas and for the preservation of important “sound-marks” that identify a place. Introduction The Global Health Observatory [1] has stated that as of 2010 more than 50% of the world’s population now lives in cities and predicted that this proportion will reach 75% by 2050. This paper looks out how this growth and changes within our cities may affect our soundscape and presents a toolbox of design tools to help guide the sound of cities. The burden of noise in cities affects our health and as cities grow is likely to affect great- er numbers if development continues as it has done historically. Noise has always been a problem when living in large social groups. Complaints about noise in cities are recorded as far back as Roman times. -

Govert Loockermans (1617?-1671?) and his relatives: How an adolescent from Turnhout worked his way up in the New World Willem Frijhoff (Erasmus University, Rotterdam / VU-University, Amsterdam) [Revised version, January 7, 2016] Summary This contribution aims at painting a picture of the person, the strategy and career of Govert Loockermans, paying special attention to the relationship he and his family in the New World had with Turnhout, and to the role played by the complex network of his relatives in the formation of New Netherland and of New York. He abandoned his Catholic Faith, and it appears that he soon ceased all contact with his blood relatives in Turnhout. He was not only a vigilant and cunning merchant, who amassed a large fortune for that time, but also a ruthless pioneer. We could see him as an icon of the current Wall Street capitalist. Either way, he was a man who helped determine and shape the age he lived in. His destiny continues to fascinate us. Govert Loockermans, the American hero from Turnhout, is the classic example of the ‘famous unknown’ gracing so many history books. He does not appear in any national dictionary, nor is he counted among the about thirty ‘famous Turnhoutenaren’ on the Turnhout tab of Wikipedia. Some of his deeds in the founding history of the country that later would become the United States are indeed very well known—even if not always flattering—but the history of his life in New Amsterdam, present day New York, has only been told a handful of times. -

Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks (2007) Chapter 29 Music and Identity: Dementia and Music Therapy Of the five hundred or so neurological patients at my hospital, about half have dementia of various sorts—from multiple strokes, from cerebral hypoxia, from toxic or metabolic abnormalities, from brain injuries or infections, from frontotemporal degeneration, or, most commonly, from Alzheimer’s disease. Some years ago, Donna Cohen, a colleague of mine, after studying our large population of patients with Alzheimer’s, coauthored a book called The Loss of Self. For various reasons, I deplored the title (though it is a very good book as a resource for families and caregivers) and set myself to contradicting it, lecturing here and there on “Alzheimer’s Disease and the Preservation of Self.” And yet, I am not sure that we were in real disagreement. Certainly someone with Alzheimer’s loses many of his powers or faculties as the disease advances (though this process may take many years). The loss of certain forms of memory is often an early indicator of Alzheimer’s, and this may progress to a profound amnesia. Later there may be impairment of language and, with the involvement of the frontal lobes, loss of subtler and deeper powers, like judgment, foresight, and the ability to plan. Eventually a person with Alzheimer’s may lose some fundamental aspects of self-awareness, in particular the awareness of their own incapacities. But does the loss of one’s self-awareness, or some aspects of mind, constitute loss of self? Shakespeare’s Jaques, in As You Like It, considering the seven ages of man, sees the final one as “sans everything.” Yet though one may be profoundly reduced and impaired, one is never sans everything, never a tabula rasa. -

Research took place between AuGust 2006 and June 2008, and included participation in both musical and non-musical activities at the home, formal and informal interviews, volunteerinG with the activities staff, and large-Group observations. In this monoGraph, I treat the nursinG home as an artificially constructed community in order to examine the role of music in daily life for the people to who live in, work at, and visit the Home. Particular attention is paid to the role of songwriting in an institution, the role of the sing-along for its participants, and the role of music and memory in the context of end-stage dementia. The study was desiGned to elucidate the followinG humanities research question: how do institutionaliZed elders use music to cope with increasinG physical, cognitive and social limitations? What I learned was that they do no such thinG. -

Draft Syllabus Subject To Change 1 Music and Madness Carmel Raz This undergraduate seminar offers historical, critical, and cross-cultural perspectives on music as a cause, symptom, and treatment of madness. The course is intended to foster interdisciplinary engagement between students interested in music, medicine, literature, philosophy, and anthropology, and to provide them with critical tools to examine constructions of music and altered mental states in social, scientific, and historical contexts. In every class, we will investigate a number of approaches to a given mental state by discussing readings by musicologists, ethnomusicologists, historians, disability studies, and medico-scientific researchers. No musical background or skills are necessary to participate. In addition to an in-depth presentation of readings in class (approximately corresponding to one reading in each disciplinary area), students will complete occasional brief responses and quizzes, and will submit a final research paper. Assignments and Grading Breakdown: 1. Final paper (ca. 15-20 pages) and presentation (40% of grade) 2. Active class participation (25% of grade) • Come to class prepared to critique the readings assigned each class. 3. Written responses / quizzes (10% of grade) 4. Introduction of two or three readings, assigned in class (25% of grade) • Two or three depends on the length and difficulty of the texts. • Students introducing the text should send me a short summary – ca. 300 words of the text’s main arguments and 3-5 discussion questions by 8pm on the Saturday prior to their presentation.
