The selection from these papers and the letters of the Prince forms by far the most interesting and important part of the present work , and we shall be glad if this portion of it can hereafter be extended . In other respects this bio graphy would gain by abridgment ; and it is also to be re gretted that the yery high price of these volumes places them altogether out of the reach of the people . A cheap edition of the book , which might be sold at cost price , since profit can be no object , reduced io about half its present size , but retaining all that came from the Prince ' s own pen , would be the most accept able gift Queen Victoria could make to her people , and per haps the most enduring monument of her Consort ' s fame . ART . VII . - - Letters of of Ace Henry graphney Stanley from from Equatorial Africa to the Daily Telegraph . London : 1877 . The exploration of Africa has been conducted of late on a - new system . The routes of the earlier travellers passed either through parts of the continent where the population is sparse , as in Caffre land or in the Sahara , or in those where it is organised into large kingdoms , such as lie between Ashanti and Wadai , and which are much too powerful to admit of any traveller forcing his way against the will of their rulers . The older explorers were therefore content to travel with small retinues , conciliating the natives of the larger kingdoms by patient persistence and feeling their way .

  • 1 We Thank the Referees for Their Careful Review
We thank the referees for their careful review and thoughtful comments. Below please see our point-by-point responses and changes made to the manuscript. Referee report #1 Thank you for responding to my comments. It is now clearer what is going on, but some additional enhancements are desirable. You need to state clearly in the abstract and probably in the manuscript as well that you are using pre-industrial conditions to examine sea-ice generated Antarctic precipitation variability in the absence of anthropogenic forcing. This should appear explicitly in the first sentence of the abstract, I think, rather than being implicit here and throughout the manuscript. I am recommending minor revisions, but think that this is a very important aspect to address comprehensively to make the intent and methodology of your extensive work obvious to the reader. Done as suggested. Now the first sentence of the abstract reads “We conduct sensitivity experiments using a general circulation model that has an explicit water source tagging capability forced by prescribed composites of pre-industrial sea ice concentrations (SIC) and corresponding sea surface temperatures (SST) to understand the impact of sea ice anomalies on regional evaporation, moisture transport, and source–receptor relationships for Antarctic precipitation in the absence of anthropogenic forcing.” A similar statement is also made in the summary paragraph of the Introduction section: “In this study, we aim to understand the impact of SO sea ice anomalies associated with internal variability (in the absence of anthropogenic forcing) on local evaporation, moisture transport and source–receptor relationships for moisture and precipitation over Antarctica using a GCM that has an explicit water source tagging capability.” Section 3.2: You attribute southerly katabatic flow to the polar high.

  • Ocean Wave Characteristics in Indonesian Waters for Sea Transportation Safety and Planning
IPTEK, The Journal for Technology and Science, Vol. 26, No. 1, April 2015 19 Ocean Wave Characteristics in Indonesian Waters for Sea Transportation Safety and Planning Roni Kurniawan1 and Mia Khusnul Khotimah2 AbstractThis study was aimed to learn about ocean wave characteristics and to identify times and areas with vulnerability to high waves in Indonesian waters. Significant wave height of Windwaves-05 model output was used to obtain such information, with surface level wind data for 11 years period (2000 to 2010) from NCEP-NOAA as the input. The model output data was then validated using multimission satellite altimeter data obtained from Aviso. Further, the data were used to identify areas of high waves based on the high wave’s classification by WMO. From all of the processing results, the wave characteristics in Indonesian waters were identified, especially on ALKI (Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lanes). Along with it, which lanes that have high potential for dangerous waves and when it occurred were identified as well. The study concluded that throughout the years, Windwaves-05 model had a magnificent performance in providing ocean wave characteristics information in Indonesian waters. The information of height wave vulnerability needed to make a decision on the safest lanes and the best time before crossing on ALKI when the wave and its vulnerability is likely low. Throughout the years, ALKI II is the safest lanes among others since it has been identified of having lower vulnerability than others. The knowledge of the wave characteristics for a specific location is very important to design, plan and vessels operability including types of ships and shipping lanes before their activities in the sea.

  • Potential Impact of Climate Change
Adhikari et al. Journal of Ecology and Environment (2018) 42:36 Journal of Ecology https://doi.org/10.1186/s41610-018-0095-y and Environment RESEARCH Open Access Potential impact of climate change on the species richness of subalpine plant species in the mountain national parks of South Korea Pradeep Adhikari, Man-Seok Shin, Ja-Young Jeon, Hyun Woo Kim, Seungbum Hong and Changwan Seo* Abstract Background: Subalpine ecosystems at high altitudes and latitudes are particularly sensitive to climate change. In South Korea, the prediction of the species richness of subalpine plant species under future climate change is not well studied. Thus, this study aims to assess the potential impact of climate change on species richness of subalpine plant species (14 species) in the 17 mountain national parks (MNPs) of South Korea under climate change scenarios’ representative concentration pathways (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 using maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and Migclim for the years 2050 and 2070. Results: Altogether, 723 species occurrence points of 14 species and six selected variables were used in modeling. The models developed for all species showed excellent performance (AUC > 0.89 and TSS > 0.70). The results predicted a significant loss of species richness in all MNPs. Under RCP 4.5, the range of reduction was predicted to be 15.38–94.02% by 2050 and 21.42–96.64% by 2070. Similarly, under RCP 8.5, it will decline 15.38–97.9% by 2050 and 23.07–100% by 2070. The reduction was relatively high in the MNPs located in the central regions (Songnisan and Gyeryongsan), eastern region (Juwangsan), and southern regions (Mudeungsan, Wolchulsan, Hallasan, and Jirisan) compared to the northern and northeastern regions (Odaesan, Seoraksan, Chiaksan, and Taebaeksan).
