Greta Atilano is one of the many bright stars in this year’s production of A Man for All Seasons. She will be portraying Meg and could not have gotten to where she is today without the help from her fellow cast, intelligent producers, or extraordinary director. Greta Atilano has previously portrayed characters such as Mayella Ewell in the Broadway production of To Kill a Mockingbird and Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Ms. Atilano currently resides in San Antonio, Texas with her family. She attends St. Matthew Catholic School and hopes to attend Incarnate Word High School. Ms. Atilano has always loved preforming in front of people and dressing up from a young age, so starring in theater and plays was only natural. She would not be where she is today without the help of her parents and her amazing director and producer, Dr. Grenardo.

A Note from the Director When I was first approached about possibly taking on the play, A Man for All Seasons, I was hesitant since I knew it was such an emotional and complex play with so many different themes and dynamics, but after months of debate and preparation I am so thankful and excited to put forth this production. This play has not only taught me so much about facts of the time, such as England’s monarchy, but it also taught me so much about what it means to truly be an archetype and be true to your faith as Sir Thomas More was. Not only am I grateful for this amazing opportunity to portray such a classic story, but I am also so thankful for my wonderful cast. Without their talent, dedication, and perseverance this play would have never been possible. I also would like to thank the many producers for providing publicity and funds that helped this show become what it is today. I would like to thank the amazing stage hands and set designers, too, who always made sure the stage really set the scene for the audience. Lastly, I would like you thank you, whoever is reading this note, thank you for taking your time to watch and admire our beautiful set, talented actors, and the story of one of the bravest saints of all, Sir Thomas More. Two years pass and much has happened as King Henry VIII has named himself the Pope, and More resigns as Chancellor. Then, Cromwell accuses and interrogates More for accepting bribes during his judicature. Next, Sir Thomas tries to end his relationship with Norfolk to prevent injury to Norfolk, which works but ultimately ends with More’s imprisonment. Later, we learn that Cromwell attempted to bribe the jailer to get dirt on More, which also fails. Thomas More’s family visits him in jail and tries to convince him to sign the oath by telling him the troubles they have encountered. Though, More is not moved by their troubles and tells them to escape on different boats at different ports on the same day. Then the jailer makes his family leave, and Sir Thomas is ready for the trial. At the trial, More is charged with high treason since his silence is against the oath, yet More retaliates and explains that according to the law, silence means consent. Rich then lies by explaining that More said the King was not the Head of the Church. Before his execution, More admits that the King is not killing him because he refused to call him the Head of the Church, but because he didn't support his divorce. Finally, More forgives the woman who gave him the bribe and the executioner as he is beheaded. Who's Who?

A Note from the Director

A Man forAll Seasons symbolizes some men and women standing by their beliefs, and some quickly changing their beliefs and how it may affect them. I learned that not everyone is going to have the same point of view as you, but you should always stick up for your beliefs and never give in to the crowd and what other people think. While directing this play, I tried my best to portray Sir Thomas More by not giving up and going after what I wanted and what I thought was right for myself and the people around me. This play was not a one man show, and I have so many people to thank. First, I would like to thank and congratulate the outstanding actors. Richard Rich tries to get Sir Thomas More to help him sneak his way to success; More instead offers him a job as a teacher, Richard refuses. More introduces Rich to the Duke of Norfolk, but doesn't recommend him. Thomas receives a letter from the Cardinal’s secretary, Wolsey, asking to meet him. Wolsey tries to convince More to let King Henry VIII have a divorce. When More tries to leave to go back home, he is stopped by Thomas Cromwell and then Signor Chapuys who try to ask him about where he stands in regards to the divorce. He eventually gets home to see his daughter, Margaret, with Roper, her boyfriend. Roper asks More if he can marry Margaret, More says no because Roper is Lutheran, not Catholic. Wolsey is accused of treason for switching sides on the divorce and dies of pneumonia. He appointed Thomas as new chancellor. Rich tries to impress Cromwell, “The King’s Ear”, and has a group discussion with him and Chapuys. The King comes to see More and tries to impress Margaret with his knowledge of language, who then responds in Latin and Greek. The King asks to speak with Thomas privately and offers a compromise. More does not have to support the divorce, but he can't go against it. Alice tells More to be careful, More tells her that divorce is not the kind of thing of which martyrs are made. Roper says he is anchored to his principles while More just believes him to go with what is easy. Cromwell meets with Rich and makes him the Collector of Revenues for York. Cromwell tricks Rich into telling him how he got a silver cup More gave him and where it is now. INTERMISSION Act II Synopsis In England, people are imprisoned without trail. Cromwell questions More about the silver cup, but More defends himself with a letter to the woman saying he will not accept the bribe. The only charge Cromwell has against him is “ingratitude”. Norfolk and More get into an argument, then More tells Norfolk to not be friends with him anymore for his safety. More gets put in jail and refuses to take the “Act of Succession”. Margaret, Roper, and Alice all visit him to try and convince him to take the oath. More refuses again and tells them to leave on the same day on different boats from different ports. Not wanting the bribe, More gave the cup to Rich. Cromwell now wants to know where the cup is to prove that More accepts bribes and that he is in fact, committing treason. While they were talking, the Duke of Norfolk, Alice More, and Margaret More enter the room. The Duke has a message from Cardinal Wolsey summoning More to visit him. At the chambers, Wosley asks More to take the King’s side about his divorce. They take opposing sides about the divorce, and Wolsey sends More back home on a boat. When More returns, he finds William Roper asking for his daughter’s hand in marriage. More replies no because Roper is Lutheran. The Common Man notifies the audience about Wosley’s death and how he named More Chancellor of England. The King goes to More’s house to ask for his help so the King can secure the divorce. More stays to stage his beliefs. Although King Henry expresses his respect for Sir Thomas’s conscience, he is clearly disappointed. Alice tells More to be careful with what decisions he makes. More says that it is not a big deal. Cromwell gives Richard Rich a job as Collector of Revenues for York. Cromwell asks Richard to tell him the pawn shop where he sold the cup and the court where the woman gave More the cup.

Act II Synopsis Two years later, King Henry VIII decided that he will become the leader of the church in England and cuts ties with Rome. Sir Thomas More resigns from his position as Chancellor of England, and Alice doesn't know what to do. Since More doesn't get paid anymore, Steward decided to resign as well because he cannot be paid. Cromwell tries to find the woman who gave More the cup. Norfolk doesn't want any part of this because he and More are friends. Rich is rich with money, and Steward is looking for a job, so he asks Rich for a job. Chapuys has a letter from the King of Spain that is addressed to More. Cromwell questions More about the cup that the woman gave to him. More denies that it was a bribe. Norfolk comes to More to tell him to just give in and get out of this situation, but More refuses. More tells Norfolk that they can't be friends anymore to protect Norfolk. More is arrested because he won't give in and take the oath. Norfolk goes to the prison to talk to More, but More still doesn't take the oath. So, Norfolk orders the guard to take out his books. Then, his family comes to prison to try to persuade him and say goodbye. It doesn't work, but More tells them to leave the country. At More’s trial, Richard Rich commits perjury against More. More is silent. Cromwell tells the jury that silence is denial when More sees it as acceptance. More is guilty and is sentenced to his death. In the end, More is beheaded. Who’s Who?

A Note from the Director

A Man for All Seasons is a classic story of a protagonist persecuted for upholding his morals. The lesson of the story is to adhere to your beliefs and not to be flippant. I, as the director, took this story to heart. We need to stick to our beliefs. Emily St. John Mandel’s Station

Eleven states, “…only the dishonorable people leave when things get difficult." When I was reading this book, I overlooked the quote. Now, I realize what it means - only the dishonorable abandon their morals when threatened to be humiliated for their morals. I would have never realized this if it wasn't for my outstanding cast. I also thank my parents and Dr. G, my English teacher, for pushing me to direct this play. A Man for All Seasons

Act I Synopsis

Is it right to kill someone for following his or faith? This situation is at hand in the play A Man for All Seasons. The first few scenes talk about King Henry VIII, the King of England, wanting a divorce from Queen Catherine, his barren wife. It also introduces characters like Sir Thomas More, the Chancellor, and Richard Rich, who is unemployed. Rich takes a silver cup that Sir Thomas More received as a bribe which Rich sells for money. Rich seeks employment, so he introduces himself to people with high authority in the next few scenes. Cardinal Wolsey and More proceed to have a conversation about the King’s divorce. Wolsey initially supports the divorce but later dies of pneumonia prior to being executed because of treason against the King for opposing it. Signor Chapuys, the Spanish Ambassador, opposed the divorce as well because he wanted to maintain good relations with England and Spain. Roper, who wants to marry Margaret, More’s daughter, says More is anchored to his principles. More does not allow the marriage because Roper converted to Lutheran from Catholicism. Cromwell, the Bishop, wants to make the divorce “convenient.” He offers Rich a job as Collector of Revenues for York, which he accepts. Cromwell asks Richard where he sold the silver cup so they could prove More took bribes.

Act II Synopsis

As the King of England names himself Pope, More does not agree; thus he resigns as Chancellor. Since More resigned, he could not make any money; therefore, the Steward working for him resigned as well. Cromwell wants to do away with More, so he wants to prove he takes bribes. Cromwell requests More’s presence and questions him about the cup. Norfolk wants to convince More to give in, but More does not, causing their relationship to break. Margaret tells More that there is a new act in parliament. More is imprisoned. Even in jail, More refuses to concede, so his books are taken away. In the time of King Henry VIII, a Catholic Church attorney named Sir Thomas More attempts to uphold his morals while his opinion and expertise is desired by all in authority in the play A Man for all Seasons. King Henry presents his barren, seemingly ugly wife in hopes that he may divorce her and marry a young, bountiful Spaniard. He is well aware of his desires being against the Church, but asks More to nullify his divorce. More always stands by his Catholic morals. On the lower spectrum, More deals with Roper, a young man anchored in his principels of faith, who seeks his intelligent and fine daughter, Maragret’s, hand in marriage. Again, More plots to stand by his morals and his faith, not allowing other religions or opinions to influence him. All the while a slimy man, Richard Rich, slowly tries to join in the politics and gain power. Split opinions arise about the divorce, and More will not clearly voice his opinion although it can be assumed that he defies the King’s divorce. Respectfully, the new chancellor More will stand by his faith, virtues, and the law.

A Note from the Director

While directing this play, I was awestruck at the simplicity of Saint Thomas More’s livelihood.

I've never studied a man simply set in his morals, which drove him to sainthood. We all strive to be saints. Directing provided me with insight on morals I strive to mirror. This play allowed me to be steadfast in my own morals, and when making decisions, I shall think back to what I have gained from this production. I lovingly thank my parents for first instilling these morals I have strengthened in directing. I thank my brothers for putting these morals to the test and making sure I come out righteous. I especially thank my family for raising me the way I am today. I could not get a more realistic standpoint of these lessons learned without my cast. Most importantly, thanks be to God for the path he has sent me on and opportunity he has granted me. Act II Synopsis

In Act II of A Man For All Seasons, exciting events unfold. To start, Roper and Margret are married, and Thomas More resigns his position saying, “Silence is safety.” Because More resigned, More and Alice were running out of money and couldn't afford to pay their steward Matthew enough money. Because of this, Matthew also resigns. Then, Cromwell, Richard Rich, and Norfolk hunt down the woman who gave More the cup, which appeared to be a bribe. The woman says she gave More the cup, but she said he didn't accept it. During this, Matthew asked to be Richard’s servant. Later, Chapuys arrives with a letter from the King of Spain for More, which More refuses to accept. Further along in the play, Rich and Cromwell question More about the cup and the woman. They make up charges to send Thomas More to jail, such as a book with the King and ingratitude. Later, More and Norfolk argue over the oath that More has to take - More refuses to take the oath, which breaks their friendship because More says it was to protect Norfolk. More ends up not taking the oath (The Act of Succession) and gets thrown in jail. Norfolk visits More and so does Margret and Alice to try to get More to say the oath. In the end, Thomas More is found guilty of high treason and is beheaded. Who’s Who?

She is in eighth grade, and her favorite subject is Physical Education. Hayden has been in several school skits but never in a play. Miss Patek would like to dedicate her performance to her family for always helping her and sending her to a great private school. Hayden would like to thank her amazing director, Dr. Grenardo, for putting together an amazing play.

A Note from the Director

A Man for All Seasons is a wonderful play about a man named Thomas More who later became a saint. This play talked about a lot of things More went through: how he acted, and what he did to become a saint. The values Thomas More has presented include silence, sticking to what you believe in, and being kind to one another. I will incorporate these values in my life, like More, everyday. I would like to thank my teacher Dr. Grenardo for everything she has done to put this play together. I also appreciate my parents for sending me to St. Matthew Catholic School where I can learn about great people like Thomas More. I would also like to thank my peers for participating in this play in class before the big performance. They have done so much work! A Man for All Seasons By Robert Bolt

Queen Catherine is barren and can no longer produce an heir to the thrown. The Catholic Church already changed the laws so King Henry could marry his dead brother’s wife, Queen Catherine. England needed a king to carry on the blood line, therefore, King Henry wants to marry another beautiful Spanish girl and nullify his marriage with Queen Catherine. Sir Thomas More is an attorney for the Catholic Church. King Henry wants Sir Thomas More to approve of the divorce; the people trust Sir Thomas. If Sir Thomas agrees, then so will the people. Sir Thomas will not support the divorce, but never says why. Sir Thomas goes to Cardinal Wolsey because he was called to speak on his opinion on the situation of the divorce. After speaking to Sir Thomas More, Cardinal Wolsey is arrested for treason. Wolsey dies on the journey towards the tower, but before he dies, he appoints Sir Thomas More as the new chancellor. Sir Thomas receives the news of Wolsey’s death at his home while with Lady Alice and Lady Margaret. King Henry later visits the family. The King speaks to Sir Thomas and says, “If you won't support me, you can't tell people you're against the divorce.” After the King’s departure, Lady Alice tells Sir Thomas to be careful. Sir Thomas tells her not to worry, people don't become martyrs for things like this. Thomas More wasn't aware that Thomas Cromwell and Richard Rich were planning a conspiracy against him. Intermission Act II Synopsis Two years later in 1532, the conspiracy against Thomas More continues. Margret More and William Roper were married, but Alice and Thomas More were poor after two years without a job for either of them since More resigned as Chancellor of England. The servant Matthew resigned to go work for Richard Rich as a new servant instead of the poor family. Signor Chapuys disguises himself and goes to Thomas More’s house to talk about England, severing ties with Rome, since King Henry VIII named himself as the new Pope of England and protector of England’s religion. But when he asked More about his opinion, More remains silent because silence is safety. “The king’s ear”, Thomas Cromwell, finds the woman who sent More a bribe of a silver cup. Cromwell tries to use this as evidence against More to get him in jail but fails. More didn't excepted the bribe from the woman or the King of Spain which had a letter filled with money to thank More for disapproving of the divorce. The Duke of Norfolk, More’s best friend, tries to get More to approve of the divorce, but More says no. Roper tries to persuade More to say the oath of parliament which asks for the King’s forgiveness, but More knew that if he said the oath then we would be damned. For not approving of the divorce, the King threw More into jail. Norfolk tries to save More’s life by trying to get him to say the oath, but he refused. Alice, Roper, and Margret come to try to convince More to say the oath, but he still refused. Instead More tells his family out of love to leave the country and save their lives. On the day of the trial, the evidence filled with false claims makes the court decide guilty. Thomas More is executed for treason against the crown. Who's Who?

She spent her middle school years learning the history of the fine arts at the South West School of . She looks back now and thanks her English teacher, Dr. Grenardo, for creating her love of theatre. Elle exclaims that theater acted as a way of expressing herself, “When I'm out on a stage with the audience holding on to ever word I say, I feel like the world is in my hands,” repositioning herself, “my dream as a little girl was to fly; when I'm acting, I feel like a bird set free.”

Note from the Director

Directing this production of A Man for All Seasons made me realize that in life there will be peer pressure in every decision you make, and sometimes you just have to stick with your gut and go with what you think and believe. In the production A Man for All Seasons, King Henry asked Sir Thomas More to approve of the divorce of King Henry VIII from Queen Catherine. The King tried to use peer pressure to get More to approve of the divorce because the people trusted him. More was an attorney for the Church and when presented with this question, he disapproved of the divorce. He saw in God’s eye that marriage was binding and that one wasn't allowed to divorce because one’s spouse is barren. The King threatened Thomas More, but More allowed him to because he knew that if he wasn't welcomed in this kingdom then at least he would be welcomed in God’s kingdom. In the end of the production, Sir Thomas More is beheaded for treason for not agreeing with the King. I see this as an example of sticking with your gut and beliefs no matter what the consequences may be. In the real world this helps me when someone wants me to go against what I believe in or go on their side. I won't let this peer pressure penetrate me through the power of God and St. Thomas More. I thank the crew for making this production possible and the cast for coming to all the practices and bringing this production to life. PLAYBILL

Program Act I Synopsis In Act I of A Man for All Season, the Common Man is onstage sitting on a basket and starts to tell an introduction to the story. Suddenly, Sir Thomas More appears, and the story begins. A sneaky and sly man, Richard Rich and Sir Thomas More have a heated argument. Richard Rich wants power and a higher position, but Sir Thomas More is a smart man and suggests that Rich become a teacher instead of a politician. Then the Duke of Norfolk comes in with Alice, the wife of Thomas, and their daughter, Margaret. Cardinal Wolsey enters the scene and sits down at the desk. More and Wolsey chat about the minutiae of 16th-century Catholic bureaucracy before finally getting to the topic at hand - the King. King Henry VIII is married to a lady named Catherine who cannot produce a male heir. Because of this, the King wants to divorce her and marry someone else. This, of course, was strictly forbidden in the Catholic Church at the time, but it is doubly true in this case, because the King had already specially petitioned the Pope in order to marry Catherine in the first place. Wolsey argues that Henry's lack of an heir could cause untold political upheaval in England. Then, Mr. Roper asks Sir Thomas More for his daughter’s hand in marriage; More says no because he is not Catholic. After, King Henry comes to his house and brags to Sir Thomas More about More’s daughter who is very smart and commands More not to oppose him. In the end of Act I, Cromwell offers Rich the position of Collector of Revenue for York District in exchange for information about More, and Rich agrees. INTERMISSION

Act II Synopsis In Act II of A Man For All Seasons, the act begins with Common Man alone on stage. It's now May 1532. — two years later – and in that time King Henry has formed the in order to make his divorce possible. More reveals that Roper and Margaret are now married. Chapuys wants Sir Thomas More to say that the new church is against his beliefs. More is hesitant, even after Chapuys suggests that he is building up an army of peasants to stage a revolt. The Church of England is now entirely separate from the Catholic Church. Although More still won't be direct about his opinion regarding these issues, he asks Margaret to take off the "chain" that signifies his status as a Cardinal. That mean he's resigning, as Chapuys had suggested. Cromwell is still dedicated to securing More’s demise. Cromwell summons Rich and a mysterious woman to prove his case. The mysterious woman explains that she gave More a fancy cup so that he would rule in her favor in a court case (which he didn't actually do). More is sent to prison for not accepting King Henry’s marriage. At Sir Thomas More’s trial, Rich reveals that he had a conversation with More about the differences between man's law and God's law. Before his sentencing, More gives a brief speech that finally reveals his reasoning — he has refused to sign the oath because a legal organization like Parliament has no grounds to make rulings regarding "Spiritual Supremacy.” After the speech, Norfolk sentences More to be taken to the Tower, where he will be executed. As More is being led to the executioner's block, he's met by Margaret, with whom he exchanges tender words. He's also met by the lady who tried to bribe him, to whom he gives an intellectual slap across the face. More’s head is then sliced off, and he dies. The Common Man is then alone in the center of stage, maskless. He tells the audience that the key to staying alive is to not "make trouble" of the sort that isn't "expected." Who's Who?

Laura M. Reilly is honored to be a part of the cast of A Man For All Seasons. Laura plays the roles of Cromwell and Alice. Laura has been taking dance classes since she was five years old. A Note from the Director

Sir Thomas More was a very interesting and respected man, he was a leader by example.

He wasn't hungry for power, instead he was a humble servant of God and stood by the Catholic

Church and its laws. The outcome of his actions made him a saint. He had shown courage, intelligence, and hope in the face of fear for the British King. Doing this performance has taught me the real definition of being loyal, respectful, and standing by your values. It has been a joy and honor to work with this cast. Thank you to all of those who have supported me and been there for me. Thank you to my family and friends. Especially thank you to the most amazing cast, I could not have done this show without all of you.

Program

Act I Synopsis Thomas More, King Henry IIIV's attorney, has been faced with a problem. King Henry asks to divorce his barren wife, Queen Catherine. In the Catholic faith, the faith that England had been practicing, it would have been considered a sin to get divorced, especially for the King just because Queen Catherine was barren. So, since Thomas More and the rest of England practices this faith, it would be incorrect for Thomas More to grant the King the right to a divorce. In scene one, Richard Rich, a weasel, and Thomas More converse. Richard Rich asks Thomas More to help him get a higher job. More tells him to be a teacher. Later More remembers a bribe that he had received and decides to give it to Richard Rich. In scene two, Thomas More, his wife Alice, his daughter Margaret, and Norfolk discuss the divorce. More leaves to see Wolsey and discusses the divorce. In scene three, Wolsey and Thomas learn that they have been on opposite sides. Wolsey supports the divorce. In scene four, Thomas More, Chapuys, and Cromwell, the King's ear, all get on a boat to return home. They all discuss the divorce and their opinions on it except for Thomas More who, when asked about his opinions on the divorce, replies with witty answers that avoid the question. In scene five, Thomas More returns home at a late time to find that Roper, Margaret's boyfriend, is asking to marry Margaret. Thomas says no to Roper because Roper is Lutheran and not Catholic, which would interfere with Thomas's beliefs. In scene six, Wolsey had been accused of treason for changing his standpoint on the divorce, and on his way to execution he dies. Thomas More takes his place as Chancellor. In scene seven, King Henry's personality is revealed as powerful and full of pride. Later in scene eight, Thomas More and the King argue about the divorce. In scene nine, Thomas explains the conversation he had with the King to Roper, Alice, and Margaret. Alice tells More to be careful with what he says to the King. Act I concludes in scene ten when Cromwell and Richard conspire against Thomas More.

INTERMISSION

Act II Synopsis

Act II begins with Thomas More resigning from his position as Chancellor because the King has named himself Pope to aid in his quest of attaining a divorce. In scene three, Norfolk gets caught in the middle of a crime being committed against Thomas More by Richard Rich and Cromwell. In scene four, Chapuys tries to convince More to read a letter from the King of Spain, More refuses to read the letter knowing the intentions behind it. In scene five, Cromwell questions Thomas More about the silver cup; and when he fails to find any evidence of a crime, he tries to find other past crimes that Thomas More might have committed. In scene six, Norfolk and More discuss their friendship, and Margaret tells More about a new oath made by parliament. In scene seven, Norfolk tries to convince Thomas More to take the oath. Since More will not, Norfolk takes his books from his jail cell. In scene eight, More says goodbye to his family and tells them to leave England so they too are not imprisoned. Director's Note

A Man for All Seasons taught me the values of standing up for what you believe in, and the importance of being grateful for the things you have instead of meddling on the things you do not have. I have applied these things to my life by being grateful, and noticing how many things have been given to me, and by standing up for myself, my friends, and my beliefs. I would like to thank my family for helping me produce this play. Act II Synopsis

In the second act in the play A Man form All Seasons, Sir Thomas More further expresses that he will not agree to the divorce between the King and his wife, nor will he approve of the decision the King made to name himself as Pope. When the King made this decree, More was left with no choice but to quit working for the King. In doing this, he made no money for his family, so they became a poor, low-life family and lost their steward. His good friend Norfolk also visits, and More says they cannot be friends anymore for Norfolk’s safety. Later, a man named Cromwell finds the woman who had given More a silver cup and accuses More of taking bribes. Cromwell then gets another man by the name of Richard Rich to also accuse More of taking bribes. More is charged with ingratitude and going against the King, so he is placed on trial. While awaiting trial, More is forced to give up his books to Norfolk. While he is waiting in prison or the day of trail to come, his family visits, he tells them they need to leave the city on the same day from different boats at different times. More says they will come for his family next so they need to leave. More is taken on trial and charged with high treason, therefore he is beheaded. Who's Who?

A Note from the Director

I have learned how to better control myself and express myself during this play. I leaned that no matter how much someone tells you something is wrong or dumb, you should always believe what in what you think is right. I will apply this value in life by always listening to my gut feeling about something and never taking a second opinion. I’d like to thank my mom and dad for staying with me through this long career that I’ve had and always being supportive of what I wanted to do. I'd also like to thank my friends for taking the time to always make me laugh and take my mind off things when times got hard. These people have always stuck with me, and I would just like to say thank you.
