Méi-Ra St-Laurent: "It’s kind of in the middle": The ‘Mid-Fi’ Aesthetic: Toward a New Designation of Black Metal Aesthetic of Recording. The Case of the Québec Black Metal Scene Abstract The designation of the black metal sound as “lo-fi” by academics is problem- atic, since it doesn’t reflect the contemporary black metal production. Field- work in the Québec scene show that the members designate their sound as being “in the middle” – or mid-fi as I advocate it. In this paper, I first define “hi-fi”, “lo-fi”, “authenticity” and “mid-fi” in the context of black metal. Then, I present different black metal sound aesthetic using audio extracts, frequency analysis, spectrogram images and ethnographic data. This analysis allow better qualify black metal aesthetic production today using the Québec scene as an example. Introduction Between April 2015 and December 2017, I conducted nineteen ethnographic interviews with twenty-five members of the black metal scene in the prov- ince of Québec (Canada) as a part of my doctoral thesis in musicology1.

  • Band: Sidious (GB) Genre: Black Metal/Death Metal Label: Kaotoxin Records Albumtitle: Revealed in Profane Splendour Duration: 36:05 Releasedate: 03.11.2014
Band: Sidious (GB) Genre: Black Metal/Death Metal Label: Kaotoxin Records Albumtitle: Revealed In Profane Splendour Duration: 36:05 Releasedate: 03.11.2014 All who read this name and hope for some kind of Star Wars metal - not at all. Here is classical black metal served. Originally (founded in 2009), the band from London named itself Seed Of Detest. Under this name they released the "Seed" demo until the band, that consists of members of Eyes Of Solitude and drummer Khrudd (Colosus, Clouds, Deos, Vaer and just Eyes Of Solitude among others), changed the name into Sidious in 2012. However if I have a look at the bands in whom Khrudd plays and had played, I get the impression that there exists only one single drummer in the most populated city within Europe (more than eight millions of inhabitants) that is able to play black metal. For whatever reasons they chose the name Sidious first was a mystery to me. At least at first sight, because I only knew the word Sidious related to Star Wars. Darth Sidious, or imperator Palpatine. But if one has a closer look, the choice of the name is clarified. The english word "insidious" can be described as: act in a subtle and profound way with damaging effects. Darth Sidious in general is described as shifty, thoroughly evil, perfidious and mighty. This is a quite suitable description for what Sidious are delivering with their first album. After this incredibly long introduction I want to come to the gist which is the music. Because this music is pleasant by all means.

MUSIC AS TRANSGRESSION: MASKING AND SONIC ABJECTION IN NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL by Woodrow Steinken B.A., New York University, 2015 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the Kenneth P. This heavy metal scene was populated by bands such as Emperor, Darkthrone, Burzum, Gorgoroth, and Satyricon. These bands performed chaotic music, often setting lyrics with themes of Satanism, anti-Christianity, murder, rape, and torture. Extremely fast or slow tempos, unusual song structures, distortion, and lo-fi sound quality distinguished the scene stylistically from other European and American heavy metals. The individuals who created this music did so under the disguise of masks: pseudonyms and corpsepaint, a makeup style that makes one look like a corpse. Members of black metal bands also engaged in extremely violent and criminal activities, including burning churches, murdering strangers and friends for various reasons, and committing suicide. This thesis explores the connections between the music and the transgressions of this music subculture, with masking at the intersection between the two.

ROCKIN’ THE TRITONE: GENDER, RACE & THE AESTHETICS OF AGGRESSIVE HEAVY METAL SUBCULTURES by KIRK MISHRELL Under the Direction of John McMillian ABSTRACT This paper explores the dynamics of two regional heavy metal styles. It focuses on the aesthetics of Florida death metal and Norwegian black metal. This paper seeks to contribute but also devi- ate from the great studies linking music with cultural studies. Heavy metal has gained interna- tional attention from many social leaders concerned with the direction of its listeners. Heavy metal, from its early foundation, has been used to rebel against social order. As the music evolves, it becomes dangerous to the social establishment; challenging ideologies such as reli- gion, globalization, feminism and common decency. This paper seeks to tell the story of the bat- tle between hegemony and the subversive subculture of intense metal, giving voice to some truly disturbed individuals dissatisfied with the existing social institution.

  • Living on the Edge Black Metal and the Refusal of Modernity
Comunicação & Cultura, n.º 14, 2012, pp. 175-190 Living on the edge Black metal and the refusal of modernity Sónia Pereira * The idea with Burzum was not only to make original and personal music, but also to create something new – a "darkness" in a far too "light", safe and boring world. Burzum was an attempt to create (or "recreate" if You like) an imaginary past, a world of fantasy – that in turn was based on our Pagan past. Burzum in itself was a spell. Too much "light" doesn't illuminate our paths and warm us, it only blinds and burns us. My hope would be that Bur- zum could inspire people to wish for a new and better reality in the real world, and hopefully do something about it. Maybe revolt against the mod- ern world, [...] by building new and healthy communities, where the Pagan culture – and magic if You like – can be cultivated. Varg Vikernes Ever since its emergence in the late 1960s, early 1970s, no other music genre has been able to generate so many and diverse forms of moral panic as heavy metal. Its history throughout the past four decades has been one of significant commercial success, but it has also constituted a primary target for many differ- ent forms of attacks and criticisms, stemming from a variety of sources, including journalists and critics, parental associations, religious groups or even political fig- ures. As passionately supported as fiercely condemned, heavy metal has hardly been able to generate indifference; on the contrary, reactions to it have been quite as extreme as the music itself, hinting that there is probably more to it than many would wish to acknowledge.

If the 1980s had been the golden age of heavy metal, the age when heavy metal was accepted by the masses and climbed the charts, the 1990s saw the fragmentation of the genre into rather different styles, that simply expanded on ideas of the 1980s. As usual, pop-metal, the genre that appealed to the masses, was, artistically speaking, the least significant variant of heavy metal. It spawned stars such as Los Angeles' Warrant, with Cherry Pie (1990); Boston's Extreme, who specialized in "metal-operas" a` la Queen such as Pornograffiti (1990); and Pennsylvania's Live, with Throwing Copper (1994); etc. Los Angeles had to live with remnants of its "street-scene" (Guns N' Roses, Jane's Addiction), although they sounded a lot less sincere and a lot less powerful than the original masters: Ugly Kid Joe, Life Sex And Death, Dishwalla, Ednaswap, etc. Glam-metal staged a comeback of sorts in Florida with Marilyn Manson (1), the product of Brian Warner's deranged mind.

  • Adorno and Black Metal
BLACK METAL IN THE CULTURE INDUSTRY Composers/pianists, Adorno and Emperor’s Ihsahn AMELIA ISHMAEL May 16, 2010 Adorno on “Culture Industry,” Chris Cutrone SAIC, Spring 2010 As a student of Siegfried Kracauer and Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno [1903-1969] continued the Marxist perspective of the Institute of Social Research [later known as the Frankfurt School]. His work on the culture industry presents cultural criticism highlighting the potential and successive failure of modern media, both that of “high” culture and of “popular” culture, to overcome the dialectic relationships established through the post-industrial social situation of capital societies. One of Adorno’s main issues within his work on the Culture Industry [CI] was the observation that modern culture comes from the top down rather then the bottom up, that modern culture is not owned by the masses, but is rather imposed upon them. This idea is clarified in his essay “Culture and Administration” as he states: “Whoever speaks of culture speaks of administration as well, whether this is his intention or not.”1 Adorno observes that what is described as culture in modern society is not culture at all, but is an expression of the industry of late capitalism. The serious issue that this clarification rises is the loss of the individuals agency and ability to subjectivity experience reality within capitalism. How can this sense of individual agency be recovered? Within this all- encompassing situation, can individuals resist the culture industry? Sociologist Dick Hebdige examines the subculture as an expression of culture’s progressive potential. He posits that by studying the (horizontal) relationships between 1 Theodore W.Adorno “Culture and Administration” in The Culture Industry (New York: Routledge), 107.
