V&A acquires the Glastonbury Festival Archive The V&A is delighted to announce a collaboration with Glastonbury Festival to create an archive reflecting more than 40 years of diverse and creative performance. Glastonbury Festival is the longest-running popular music and performing arts festival in the world. Set up in 1970 by Michael Eavis on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset – the Eavis’s family farm for four generations - the Festival is now attended by around 175,000 people annually. It has a long and unique history of hosting music, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other arts and collaborating with artists, set designers and craftspeople. Many distinguished names have performed at the summer festival over the last four decades including Beyoncé, Bjork, Blondie, Marc Bolan, Coldplay, The Cure, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, New Order, Oasis, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Toots and the Maytals, Velvet Underground and Amy Winehouse. This eclectic archive includes a range of material, from programmes and posters from every festival since 1970, designs for the Festival identity, interviews, unseen film and photographs, correspondence, t-shirts, tickets and other memorabilia. Personal accounts and documents trace the origins of the Festival and festival maps reveal how it has grown and developed within the landscape. Press cuttings document the relationship of the Festival with the local community and stories that captured the nation. The working processes of the Festival will be captured in the archive with original backstage passes, photographs and performers’ set-lists. The archive also includes photographs that reveal the evolution of the legendary Pyramid stage since its creation in 1971 to a permanent stage – also briefly used as a cattle shed in 1981. -

An investigation of the effects Glastonbury Festival has on the day-to-day lives of the communities of local villages. Jessica Dyer ST20063194 BA (Hons) Events Management Cardiff Metropolitan University May 2018 i ii Abstract: The study explores how Glastonbury Festival has a social impact on its surrounding communities and investigates how this affects the resident’s day-to-day lives using Small’s model of social impact (Small, 2007, cited in Bladen et al., 2012, p.369). In order to achieve this, the researcher created realistic and achievable aims and objectives, which were used to critically analyse and evaluate information on the social impacts of festival’s and large-scale events and in particular, how Glastonbury Festival affects its local communities. An evaluation of secondary data was conducted, investigating the effects festivals and events have on their local residents within and how these related to the Small’s model. The literature on the subject chosen, was critically reviewed and analysed to highlight any themes and patterns between the existing literature and the project in question. The project provided evidence that the literature is minimal on the social impact of communities alone, as most is in connection to economic impact. The primary data collected within the study was qualitative data, in the form of six semi- structured interviews, with participants who lived within the four chosen areas surrounding Glastonbury (West Pennard, Shepton Mallet, Pilton and Glastonbury town). Letters were sent to residents to recruit potential participants for the project. The six participants selected were of the ages 18-30 years old, 31-50 years old and 51 and over (two participants from each age group). -

Did you know? Mud, yurts and music: It must be Glastonbury! For the last 45 years on the last weekend in June, dairy farmer Michael Eavis has hosted what is now the world’s biggest pop festival on Worthy farm in Somerset. The cows are moved to other quarters, the multiple stages are erected and the thronging crowds are welcomed. Most of the biggest names in pop music have played at Glastonbury at some point over its 45-year history, from David Bowie to Dolly Parton and Paul MacCartney to Beyoncé. The Rolling Stones, U2, Coldplay, Jay Z, Dizzee Rascal – even the heavy metal band Metallica has headlined. Last year there were 2,200 performers on over 100 stages. There was live music (in all its infinite variety); there were DJ’s, political speakers, circus acts, magicians, philosophers, children’s entertainers, poets, stand-up comedians, healers, dancers, storytellers and puppeteers - a veritable cornucopia of artists. The Worthy farm site is located at Pilton about seven miles from the town of Glastonbury and not far from the famous Tor. The festival site is set across 1,200 acres in the mystical Vale of Avalon, so trying to cross the site when the thousands of festival-goers are in attendance can take hours. Weather can also hinder progress around the site. It seems that most years there is a downfall which creates the now familiar pictures of water-logged fields and campsites and festival-goers trying to remain cheerful while wading through muddy bogs in Wellingtons. The Glastonbury music festival has changed beyond all recognition from its inception in 1970, when tickets cost just £1 (including free milk from Eavis’s cows) and just 1,500 people attended. -

During 1997,1998,1999,2000,2002,2003 Glastonbury Festival revelers were offered the opportunity to make a donation for a tree to be planted on their behalf in a bid to help reduce the carbon footprint created by their time at the event. On average 1700 trees were planted every year and now 20 years later the trees and resulting ‘Glastonbury Festival’ woodlands are thriving. We managed to plant over 10,000 trees in total. The woodlands are maturing and flourishing creating homes for wildlife, wild places for people to visit, educational opportunities, pollution solutions, soil stabilization as well as sequesting carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. FILNORE WOODS IN THORNBURY, ! SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE ! This multi-use community woodland of native local trees was planted in winter of 1998 and spring 1999. Mainly ash and oak with hazel, cherry, birch and shrubs, this stunning site is multi-use forestry at its best providing: • a diverse range of habitats housing abundant wildlife • a wild place for people to visit • opportunities for education • The site is well managed by South Gloucestershire Council and enjoys: • The support of a ‘friends of Filnore Woods’ group who undertake voluntary management and are involved in the upkeep and development of the site. • Regular walks and talks from experts on-site for spotting invertebrates, bats, owls and dawn chorus events. • Monitoring of invertebrates, birds and wild flower surveys. • Upon visiting you will find: Members of the community are openly • well serviced footpaths welcomed to visit and get involved with areas • self-guided walks designed to appeal to teenagers, school visits organized and even 4 x 4 visits for less mobile • diverse wildflowers and disabled members of the community. -
