To examine claims that the role of botanical art in systematic botany is diminishing because of advances in photography, this review considers relevant literature and includes a quantitative analysis of trends in modern journals, monographs and floras. Our focus is on southern hemisphere systematic botany because, relative to the northern hemisphere, this is poorly represented in modern reviews of botanical art and photography. An analysis of all digitally available papers in Nuytsia, the Journal of the Adelaide Botanic Garden, Muelleria, Telopea, Austrobaileya and Systematic Botany established that, although photographic illustrations have increased since 2000, botanical illustrations have not always diminished. The cause of these trends is unknown, but it is likely to be due to several factors, including sourcing funding for production of botanical illustration, editorial preference for the use of illustrations or photographs, author preference for either illustrations or photographs, and moving to online publication, with no charges for colour reproduction. Moreover, the inclusion of botanical artists as co-authors in some scientific publications signals an ongoing and important role. Botanical illustration brings sharp focus and meticulous attention to detail regarding form and structure of plants. -

SIBBALDIA: 171 The Journal of Botanic Garden Horticulture, No. 10 LIVING COLLECTION OF FLORA GRAECA SIBTHORPIANA: FROM THE FOLIOS OF THE MONUMENTAL EDITION TO THE BEDS OF A BOTANIC GARDEN IN GREECE Sophia Rhizopoulou1, Alexander Lykos2, Pinelopi Delipetrou3 & Irene Vallianatou4 ABstrAct The results of a survey of vascular plants illustrated in the 19th-century publication Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana (FGS) and grown in Diomedes Botanic Garden (DBG) in Athens metropolitan area in Greece reveal a total number of 274 taxa belonging to 67 families, using the Raunkiaer system of categorising plants by life form (Raunkiaer, 1934). Therophytes dominate with 36 per cent, while hemicryptophytes, chamephytes and geophytes follow with 16 per cent, 14 per cent and 14 per cent respectively. In terms of life cycle, 60 per cent are perennials, 36 per cent annuals and 4 per cent other growth forms adapted to environmental disturbance. Although anthropo- genic pressures and environmental stresses have caused loss of habitat and resulted in profound landscape transformation in the eastern Mediterranean, DBG contributes to the maintenance of approximately one-third of the plants collected in territories of the Levant in 1787. This living collection constitutes an important testimony to the scientific value, heritage and plant diversity described in FGS. Statistics are provided comparing the plants collected and illustrated for FGS and those now growing in DBG. IntroDuctIon Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana (Sibthorp and Smith, 1806–1840) is considered by many to be the most splendid and expensive flora ever produced and was printed in ten folio volumes between 1806 and 1840 (Stearn, 1967; Lack & Mabberley, 1999; Harris, 2007). -

Flora Graeca is a work in ten folio volumes, published in London between 1806 and 1840. It is based on the botanical collections made by John Sibthorp during his travels in what is now Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Turkey and the pictorial documentation of the plants produced by Ferdinand Bauer. The text was written by James Edward Smith, Robert Brown and John Lindley. Flora Graeca was printed in a tiny edition with the result that many botanists considered it to be non-existent or as only a manuscript. This paper deals with the few copies of Flora Graeca kept today in libraries on the European continent and their historical backgrounds – three in Paris, one in Vienna and Darmstadt respectively, all apparently subscription copies, while the copies in St. Petersburg and Copenhagen were previously owned by Fredrick North, 5th Earl of Guildford, and John Platt. The botanical affiliations of the previous owners, among them Franz I, Emperor of Austria, and Ludwig I, Grand Duke of Hesse, are explained. The libraries on the European continent that have copies of the so-called Bohn reissue of Flora Graeca are listed. Particular attention is given to the Belgrade copy, a hybrid consisting of printed title matter with some of the landscapes copied by hand and the 966 engravings, whereas all text pages, indices and appendices have been written on a type writer. -

IN MEMORIAM Elli Stamatiadou
PHYTOLOGIA BALCANICA 21 (2), Sofia, 2015 221 IN MEMORIAM Elli Stamatiadou (1933–2015) Elli Stamatiadou passed away on 1 May 2015 after a serious illness. She was the chief curatorial assistant of the Goulandris Natural History Museum, from 1965 to 2009 and the greatest contributor to the Muse- um’s botanical collections, both in quantity and outstanding quality. We can certainly state that in Greece she was one of the most visible and respected plant-collectors of her day. Elli was born on 1 April 1933 in the village of Apikia on the island of Andros in the northern Kiklades. After completing high school she moved to Athens with the plan of studying physical education at the University of Athens. However, marriage to Yiannis Stamatiadis in 1953 and work at the publishing house of Ioannis Passas (producer of the well-known “Helios” encyclopaedia) followed. In 1963 her husband, a qualified electrician, took part in the restoration and renovation of a large 19th century residence in Ki- fissia, north of Athens where he became director of technical services. This building eventually opened to the public as the Goulandris Natural History Museum, founded in 1964 by Angelos and Niki Goulandris. Fig. 1. Plants are essential to all aspects of our lives. They feed, clothe and shelter us, and provide us with drugs, medicine and the oxygen we need to survive. Moreover, they have key roles in resolving current global problems such as food security, environmental change and sustainable development. This summer marks the anniversary of the foundation of the Oxford Botanic Garden, in 1621, and offers an opportunity to reflect on four centuries of botanical research and teaching in the University. Botany in Oxford, as we will see in this exhibition, has not enjoyed steady growth. Activity has been patchy; long periods of relative torpor, punctuated by bursts of intensely productive activity. The professors and researchers who have worked in Oxford have contributed to startling advances in our knowledge of plants, but they also found themselves held back by circumstance – their own, the societies in which they lived, or by the culture of the University. The roots of Oxford botany are in its collections of specimens and books, which remain central to modern teaching and research. -

Many British scientists spent their lives exploring all of these different regions. Cyprus was included from 1878 to 1960. Cyprus is located within the Mediterranean climate zone. Cyprus contains multiple Altitudinal zones. These factors make the flora of Cyprus especially unique within the British Empire. Quite early on his career he showed great interest in plants and by the ripe age of 25 he was granted professorship, the Sherardian Chair of Botany. -
