AVID ALAN BURNETT entered Colorado College in the fall of 1964, bringing along a camera Dand interest in photography already generated during high school. We like to think that the liberal learning opened up by multiple conversations in the Colorado College experience, during the exciting, challenging mid-decade of the 1960s, contributed to fine-tuning the discerning eye Burnett would put at the center of his career as a photojournalist. Throughout his career, he has been a generalist, finding and capturing telling moments across a global spectrum of the tumultuous events and people of the past 40 years. Moments as varied as those in athletic competition and war, high politics and natural disasters. Perhaps their only common denominator has been the human face of striving, aspiring, suffering, persevering human beings. Before his senior year at CC, Burnett interned with Time magazine. After graduation here as a political science major, he worked on contract for Time/Life , including two years in Vietnam; then for two years he traveled the world for the French agency Gamma. Since 1976 he has had his own company, Contact Press Images, and has worked in that capacity for most of the leading photo and news magazines of the U.S. and Europe. Along the way he has received the top awards of his profession, including the Robert Capa gold medal of the Overseas Press Club of America, the World Press Photo Premier Award, the Philippe Halsman award of the American Society of Magazine Photographers, and first prize from the International Olympic Committee’s photo competition. Burnett has brought before an international audience a profusion of memorable images, often catching moments of intense emotion, such as the unforgettable shot of Mary Decker’s fall at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, or, a decade earlier, Richard Nixon speaking to his staff on the morning of his resignation. He recorded the face of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran in January 1979, and of the Shah he would replace. We see all U.S. presidents from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush, often in quiet moments that illuminate private personality; Reagan and Gorbachev at their first meeting in Geneva; a Cambodian refugee mother with her baby; Chilean students just arrested after the Coup of 1973; and a GI in Vietnam in 1971 reading a letter from home. We remember a great montage of faces of the nameless victims of wars, and natural calamities from Ethiopian famine to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Five years ago, introducing the selection of his photos exhibited for a CC reunion under the title, “Measures of Time,” Burnett wrote: “In the end, the history we see is best reflected in the faces, and reactions of the people who live it. For me, finding those faces, be they famous or unknown, became the quest of my work. ...Still pictures at their strongest, freeze the moment around which everything else revolves. It is those moments, stitched together, by which we can try to measure our lives, and the world around us.” By reflecting on the moments he has preserved for us, we can indeed be helped to measure our own lives. That gift enriches us, furthers our liberal learning and deserves our deep gratitude. For the gift of his distinguished photojournalism, I am privileged to present David Alan Burnett for the Colorado College degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa .

— David D. Finley ANGELYN KONUGRES COUPOUNAS ’46

HEN ANGELYN KONUGRES COUPOUNAS of Trinidad, Colo., graduated in 1946, it was a time Wof readjustment from wartime upheavals. While the ranks of permanent faculty and male students were reduced throughout the war due to military service, Colorado College believed in its longstanding mission to send forth graduates “trained in the techniques of modern life” as the catalog put it. Able to see the need for broadly trained medical professionals, the college was a leader in providing rigorous biological training for “in-house” students and visitors who came from the military to get premedical training. Coupounas knew from early on that medicine, not then a common choice for women, intrigued her. Whether as physics tutor to the Marines or one of the select members of Professor Gilmore’s biology club, this biology major did not shrink from challenge. On track for medical school, she chose to first hone her understanding of medical needs at the L.A. County Hospital, earning a master’s degree in 1948 with a focus on blood transfusion medicine. War had shown how transfusions were critical for saving lives, and as the war needs lessened, how blood banks might be an enormous asset to public health. Medicine knew the importance of “transfusion medicine” but not the full scope of blood matching. Our blood holds a deeply nuanced genetic language with complex cell signals; individual biological dialects of critical importance that determine whether blood mixing saves or kills. Angelyn Coupounas became fluent in these dialects of blood. After running the Los Angeles County blood bank, she knew she wanted to pursue a research path in blood transfusion medicine, so new a field, it did not yet have a name. With a research fellowship, she went to Cambridge in England, and in 1959, became the world’s first recipient of a Ph.D. in immunohematology, an expert in the attack on infant hemolytic disease where maternal and infant blood incompatibilities are life threatening. Over the past decades, Angelyn Coupounas has continued to be a world-recognized pioneer and scientist, playing diverse roles of researcher, teacher, mentor, author, editor, and public communicator of science, as well as partner to her husband George and mother to her son Demitri. She has been director of research at Boston Hospital for Women, director of immunohematology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, principal associate in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard, lecturer and educator around the world, an authority in neonatal blood diseases and transfusions and in paternity testing, an expert witness in legal cases on disputed parentage, and author of legal guidelines for the and the American Medical Association. Her work has been honored by Harvard and the Massachusetts Association of Blood Banks with the Angelyn Coupounas Seminar in Immunohematology, by the American Association of Blood Banks with its Medallion for Leadership for her discovery of new blood factors, and by the Morton Grove-Rasmussen Memorial Award for scientific contributions to transfusion therapy. In 1985 Colorado College recognized Angelyn Coupounas with its first Louis Benezet Award, for extraordinary achievement that exemplifies the values of a liberal arts and sciences education. Throughout her scientific career, Angelyn Coupounas has continually practiced her commitment to civic engagement and education. She has served on the Board of Trustees of Hellenic College, Mt. Ida College, Anatolia College, and the YMCA of Boston, as a member of the Defense Department’s Advisory Committee of Women in the U.S. Military, the Boston World Affairs Council, and the executive council of the Cambridge-Oxford Society. After retiring from her position at Harvard Medical School, she returned to take classes in the humanities and social sciences. — Tass Kelso JEROME P. M CHUGH, SR.

HE COLORADO COLLEGE COMMUNITY is especially pleased to honor Jerome P. “Jerry” McHugh, TSr., president/CEO of Jerome P. McHugh & Associates and Nassau Resources, of Denver, Colo., for his three decades of remarkable leadership, service, and generosity to the college. McHugh and his wonderful wife Anabel C. McHugh volunteered nearly 30 years ago to head up the Colorado College Parents’ Council. They have been volunteering and stalwart champions of the college ever since. Jerry McHugh soon was elected to the college’s Board of Trustees and it is fair to say redefined what an A+ or all-star trustee was all about. For 24 years, he served on several important trustee committees and task forces including the nominating and development committees, the 1982-83 Campaign Planning Committee, the 1984-89 Campaign Executive Committee, the 1992 Presidential Search Committee, and the Strategic Planning Commission on the Physical Plant. He chaired the trustee Buildings and Grounds Committee from 1982-96. He made hundreds of trips to campus advising on buildings and grounds and fundraising initiatives. He helped recruit a large number of those who have served as trustees, and he was an always available mentor and motivator for the college’s four presidents and three acting presidents during his years of service. He retired from the board as trustee emeritus in 2004. Jerry and Anabel McHugh were the leading benefactors enabling this college to build the CC Cabin in Teller County, to acquire the spectacular CC campus property at the Baca in the San Luis Valley. They were indispensable allies for those of us who established the college’s Center for Community Service in the 1980s. They have been among the most loyal supporters of the college’s distinguished Southwest studies program. And they endowed one of the college’s important professorships. The McHugh Alumni Plaza and McHugh Commons were named in honor of McHugh as well as a forthcoming scholarship in recognition of his many benefactions for the college. Jerry McHugh also served as a trustee of the Colorado Outward Bound Program and Colorado Academy. Jerry McHugh may be a Princeton University Tiger, yet he has helped recruit more prospective CC Tigers than anyone outside of our professional admissions staff, including two of his own children, two grandchildren, dozens of neighbors, children of his business associates, and countless others. Jerry McHugh, we congratulate you on your impressive and talented family, your enormously successful business and professional causes, your uncommon generosity to Colorado College, Denver’s “I Have a Dream” Program, and many other philanthropies. We thank you both for your tireless devotion to Colorado College and for the contagious pride you have in the success this great college has enjoyed over the past 30 years. — Tom Cronin CLEASTHER B. MARCHMAN

LEASTHER B. MARCHMAN is a driving force in the city of Colorado Springs. As a military spouse, she traveled Cextensively around the world before finally arriving in Colorado Springs from Thailand in 1965. In those 40 years, she has had a tremendously positive impact on school/community relations and educational enhancement focusing on minority youth, and has fostered creative partnerships among diverse organizations. Colorado College is fortunate to be one of those organizations with whom Marchman has developed and maintained innovative and unique collaborative efforts throughout the years and we are pleased to honor her today. Marchman served a pivotal role as the school/community relations representative for local Harrison School District #2 for 26 years, ensuring the district’s support of internal and external efforts focusing on youth and parent engagement. From 1987 to 1996, she also directed the Minority Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Program for the district and first began outreach to Colorado College. She called upon many members of our community, including Associate Dean Victor Nelson-Cisneros, Director of Minority Student Life Rochelle Mason, myself, and several Colorado College students to mentor these young scholars around issues of leadership development and college preparation. Through her outreach to the college and our students, Marchman laid important groundwork for some of our initial connections to service learning and civic engagement focusing on people of color. Marchman’s commitment to educational enrichment for youth continued through her involvement as one of the original members of the African-American Youth Leadership Conference planning committee. This conference, which began in 1992 as a small project targeting African-American males, soon grew in scope beyond the facilities in which it was housed and also expanded its scope to include all youth. Marchman saw this as yet another opportunity for Colorado College to partner with local leadership; she proposed that the college become the host site and one of the primary sponsors for the event, and we have proudly done just that since 1994, through generous funding from our president’s office. In that time, the conference has grown to over 100 parents and 500 students who visit our campus each March, many of whom have gone on to greater success as Colorado College scholars. She also advocated Colorado College and Shove Chapel as the host site for the annual citywide Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration, and it is indeed our honor to welcome hundreds of community members to our campus each year for this worthy event. As someone who is truly dedicated to service, particularly to our youth, Marchman was the ideal candidate to head up a new program aimed at greater retention for our minority students at CC. In 2003, she collaborated with my office and the office of minority student life to initiate the Colorado College Minority Student Ambassador/Host Family Program, which pairs incoming students with friends and mentors in the greater Colorado Springs community. Now in its fourth successful year, this program has been instrumental in helping our students establish and maintain a greater “sense of place” (to quote our institutional core values) as they discover new relationships and support networks both on and off campus. Several of the students in this program have also received financial assistance from the Wynn-Marchman Scholarship Fund, which Marchman established with Debra Wynn through the African-American Youth Leadership Conference in 1996. Mrs. Marchman received an associate’s degree from Pikes Peak Community College in 1972, but she is a true life-long learner. She has served on numerous boards and service organizations over the years including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Urban League, Colorado Black Women for Political Action, Colorado Springs Black Chamber of Commerce, Pikes Peak Hospice, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Citizens’ Goals, and the metro YMCA. She has been honored for her contributions and is the recipient of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Citizen of the Year Award, the Colorado Minority Engineering Association Service Award, and the City of Colorado Springs Human Relations Commission Award of Excellence, to name a few. Colorado College has previously honored her with a certificate of appreciation for her community work and strong support of Colorado College. Marchman’s involvement with and contributions to the African-American and greater Colorado Springs communities cannot be underestimated. While busily immersed in public life, she has managed to find time to raise six children and is a proud grandmother of 13. She is an enthusiastic, creative, and dedicated expert in community relations and educational excellence. She recognizes the vital ongoing importance of the “town/gown” relationship and has done much to help Colorado College attain and sustain greater connections with the community in which we live. Moreover, she has helped us in many ways to honor our commitment to values of diversity. Cleasther Marchman is a true personal friend to many of our staff and students and a true friend to Colorado College. — Mike Edmonds MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING
