Do Board Gender Quotas Matter? Selection, Performance and Stock
Do Board Gender Quotas Matter? Selection, Performance and Stock Market Effects∗ Giulia Ferrari1, Valeria Ferraro2, Paola Profeta3, and Chiara Pronzato4 1INED 2Boston College 3Bocconi University and Dondena 4University of Turin Abstract From business to politics and academia, the economic effects of gender quotas are under scrutiny. We provide new evidence based on the introduction of mandatory gender quotas for boards of directors of Italian listed companies: quotas are associated with positive selection (higher education and lower age of board members), a lower variability of stock market prices, no significant impact on firms’ performance and a positive effect on stock market returns at the date of the board’s election. Overall, our results are consistent with gender quotas giving rise to a beneficial restructuring of the board positively received by the market. JEL Codes: J20, J48, J78. Keywords: education, age, financial markets. ∗A previous version of this paper circulated as working paper IZA 10239 (2016), Dondena 92 (2016), CHILD 43 (2016) under the title "Gender quotas: Challenging the boards, performance and the stock market". We thank Luca Bagnato, Vittoria Dicandia and Paolo Longo for excellent research assistance. We thank the Department of Equal Opportunities of the Italian Presidency of Council of Ministries for the partnership in the project “Women mean business and economic growth” financed by the European Commission, DG Justice, which provided financial support for a part of the data collection. We thank J. Ignacio Conde-Ruiz for data on the Spanish companies. Selected Vocal Works by Progressive Italian
ABSTRACT Title of Document: SELECTED VOCAL WORKS BY PROGRESSIVE ITALIAN COMPOSERS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: THE CONFLUENCE OF NATIONALISM AND INTERNATIONALISM FROM THE EVE OF WORLD WAR I THROUGH POST-WORLD WAR I1 RECONSTRUCTION Stacey Lynn Mastrian, D.M.A., 2007 Directed By: Professor Dominic Cossa, School of Music This dissertation project explored the non-operatic vocal music (i.e., art song, chamber music, solo works, and other more experimental media) by Italian composers of the 20th century. This body of repertoire suffers from poor availability and quality of scores, recordings, performances, and information. Research took place in the U.S. and Italy-through musical investigations, personal collections and contacts, libraries, and online resources. The project was designed with several parameters in mind: 1. work was centered on the composers who cast the text and the piano or other "accompaniment" in important roles, with correspondingly complex rhythms and harmonies, and who melded cosmopolitan influences with Italianate lyricism, as opposed to those who merely continued in the simplistic, insular manner of their predecessors; 2. settings by Italian composers of texts in other languages were included (Apollinaire, Ibn-Ezra, Machado, Verlaine, etc.) in addition to settings of Italian poetry (d'Annunzio, Pavese, Ungaretti, etc.); 3. works were chosen that were not just for single voice and piano but also utilized other performing forces (i.e., chamber music, electronics.. .). Other selection factors included: score availability; -
Pink Songs a Duo Alterno's Project with Contemporary Music in a Female Good Mood
Pink Songs A Duo Alterno's project with contemporary music in a female good mood Duo Alterno Tiziana Scandaletti soprano Riccardo Piacentini piano and foto-songs A new concert program created by Duo Alterno on the twentieth anniversary of its musical career, featuring “foto-suoni” and images connecting them to the voice-piano repertoire of the Italian contemporary composers collected over a hundred tours in fifty countries. Among the contemporary composers, there are many women composers, such as Roberta Vacca from Rome, Sonia Bo and Rossella Spinosa from Milan, Teresa Procaccini from Foggia, Marcella Pavia, born in Argentina, but living in Italy. And there are also two very amusing pieces by the unforgettable Cathy Berberian and, finally, one timeless work by John Cage for voice and closed piano, where the female presence is represented by a “beautiful widow of eighteen springs” on Joyce's texts. Four Foto-Songs recorded by the Duo Alterno across the world and “com-posed” by Riccardo are merged in the concert program through a precise fil rouge: they come from different metropolitan streets of the world, with a lot of female voices, from Melbourne and Istanbul (nocturnal sounds and didgeridoo), from Addis Abeba and São Paulo do Brasil (children), from San Francisco and Portland (cable cars and tin drums), from Beijing and Bangkok (buskers and popular markets)... all in a musically stunning reportage of soundscapes caught in five continents. Roberta Vacca Versi di gatti (2003, vers. 2018) for mewing voice and piano (text freely extracted from “La gatomaquia” by Lope de Vega) Dedicated to the Duo Alterno Cathy Berberian Morsicathy (1969) for piano, morse code and mosquito Stripsody (1966) for voice and comic strips by Roberto Zamarin Riccardo Piacentini (1958) FOTO-SONGS from the streets of the world (2011/16) - Foto-song 1. -
