Girls U/17 Competition

The CTPL Girl’s Competition was introduced in this season with the aim of providing a suita- ble pathway for girls to progress through to the Women’s Premier League.

In its inaugural year; Glenorchy, Kingborough, New Town, North Hobart, SHSB and University all fielded teams. Played on synthetic , the competition took place over seven weeks prior to Christmas with the top two teams progressing through to the Grand final that was played as a curtain raiser to a Women’s match at New Town Oval.

Unfortunately, wet weather caused the abandonment of two rounds but each team was still able to participate in five matches and at the conclusion of the last round, three teams were tied on four wins. On quotient, Kingborough were unfortunate to miss the final with SHSB topping the ladder and New Town coming in second.

In the final, SHSB batted first but were no match for New Town who were crowned premiers (pictured below).

The competition will return next year and any girls interested in playing are encour- aged to contact any of the eight premier league clubs or Female Engage- ment Officer, Mia Blignaut at [email protected] or on 6282 0490. Premier League Bulletin

Club Championship

With just two regular season matches to go, Kingborough DCC should take home the Club Championship. Currently well clear on the ladder the Knights are top of the table in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade as well as Under 15’s. There is still plenty up for grabs in the middle of the table though with 3rd and 6th only separated by 17 points.

Roar duo Paris Crowe and Meg Phillips opened the innings and scored steadily but there were signs of nerves early as both offered chances to the Roos who couldn’t capitalise. The pair batted together until the 17th over when at 0/112, Crowe was caught on the boundary for 70, which included 10 fours. With the dismissal of Crowe, Phillips took charge and started finding the fence including a big six over mid-wicket but in the pursuit of quick runs, the Bucks lost Gabby Mann (1) and Phillips (59) to run outs in the 19th over before the innings finished at 3/139 (cc). In reply, Clarence had a good start moving to 0/32 from six overs before Emma Thompson (14) was caught off the bowling of Crowe. However, Roos young duo of Olivia McDonald and Erin Fazackerley continued the scoring and steadied the innings. The pair combined for a 70 run partnership before Mann broke through, bowling Fazackerley (38) in the 16th over. Heading into the final over Clarence were 3/122 requiring 18. Katie Cole (2) was run out coming back for a second on the first ball before McDonald (39) was caught by Crowe. The defiant innings of Clarence ultimately coming to an end at 5/130, nine runs short of the tar- get. Mann the best of the bowlers for the Bucks with 2/21. In the second semi-final, undefeated minor premiers North Hobart, took on 4th placed South Hobart Sandy Bay and were sent in to bat first after the Sharks won the toss. The Demons found trouble early with Angela Green (3) bowled by Beth Schiwy in the second over before Hannah Short (3) was run out by a direct hit from Laura Newell in the very next over. Veter- ans Veronica Pyke and Belinda Page then combined and set about scoring quickly. Their part- nership of 72 came from just 45 balls and was only broken when Page was removed for 32 (23) by some handy glove work from Naomi Lynch. The wicket didn’t slow the run rate with Bernadette Doyle finding the boundaries almost immediately as Pyke passed 50. The pair added an additional 71 (50) before Doyle was run out for 38 in the 19th over. Pyke finished unbeaten on 96 from just 58 deliveries, Demons 4/177 at close. Pyke then started with the ball and in her second over, re- moved key wicket of Linsey DaCosta (0) to put the Sharks under immediate pressure. Corinne Hall and Naomi Lynch were batting well but couldn’t keep up with the required rate as they moved the score to 1/63 at the end of the 11th over. With Lynch (36) and Hall (27) removed in quick succession, the Sharks hopes of a finals appearance had ended. They finished their innings 5/110, 67 runs short of the total. Pyke putting on an all-round display with a further 2/15 and a run out.

While North Hobart finished the season in 3rd and Kingborough in 4th, both put in impressive performances in the semis defeating higher placed opposition to progress through to the grand final for a second straight year. The rivalry between the clubs had been fierce since the 2012/13 grand final and despite their positions at season end, Kingborough were slight favourites after winning both regular season matches.

The defending premiers won the toss and elected to bat first but suffered early setback when Hannah Short picked up Emily Lawson (1) with her first and then Kristy Cop- pleman (3) to reduce the Knights to 2/8 after 6 overs.

Tight bowling from Short (2/10) and Veronica Pyke (0/9) at the start of the innings restricted Kingborough to just 19 runs from the first 8 overs with the first boundary not coming until the 6th over. Stephanie Nichols came on as first change and continued to heap the pressure on Kingborough with the wicket of Johanna Jones before a mix up between Sasha Moloney and Rachael Styles left Styles well short when she was run out by Angela Green. Nichols then had Alyssa Small (0) caught and bowled shortly after with Kingborough stuttering along at 5/38 after the 13th over.

With Moloney still at the crease there was a glimmer of hope for Kingborough but when she was caught on 22 trying to go after Sarah Birch it all but signalled the end for the Knights. Birch then cleaned up the tail to collect stunning figures of 4/6 from 3 overs, Kingborough not able to face out their 20 overs, collapsing all out for 53 off 18 overs.

The Knights needed wickets early if they were to be any chance but without any real scoreboard pressure Short and Birch were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over with the occasional boundary which was something Kingborough couldn’t manage.

Short (14) was caught and bowled by Coppleman with the score on 22 but veteran Pyke came in at number 3 and while Birch held down her end, Pyke went about scoring quickly bringing up the winning runs with a boundary in the 12th over. North Hobart winning easily by 9 wickets.

Pyke was not out 24 (19) while Birch’s undefeated 16 (37) combined with her exceptional bowling figures landed her the Player of the Match award. CTPL Women’s Records

The Get Wines Direct Intrastate Cup series extended to a five match series this season played across Tasmania with the Greater North claiming their first series win (4-1). Sasha Moloney was awarded the Player of the Series, scoring 218 runs at 72.67 across the five matches.

Game One— October 4th 2014 Game One at Ferguson Park saw captain of the Greater North team Meg Phillips win the toss and elect to bat. Batting proved tough early with the Greater North slumping to 3-31 before num- ber 6 batsmen Alison Kamphuis (76) steadied the innings to take the Greater North to a competitive total of 7/182(cc). Anita Silva led the charge for the South, claiming 2/18 off 6 overs.

In reply, Greater North’s opening bowler, Katelyn Fryett, bowled 10 overs straight to record figures of 3-19, snaring Anita Silva, Veronica Pyke & Hannah Short all cheaply. Paris Crowe (27) and Sasha Moloney (30) proved resilient at the crease for a 50 run partnership before Emma Thompson dismissed both in quick succession.

The tail was wrapped up quickly after as the Southern team fell short, finishing on 129 with Kamphuis claiming 3/17 off 7 overs as the best of the bowlers.

Game Two— October 12th In a tight finish at Ferguson Park, the South levelled the series after chasing down Greater North’s total of 4/203 with 10 balls to spare.

Greater North won the toss and again elected to bat and put together good partnerships with Steph Carr (31), Lauren Hepburn (66) and Moloney (38*) batting superbly to lead the North to 4/203(cc). Some tight bowling from Pyke (0/33), Short (1/15) and Silva (2/21) con- tained Greater North’s run rate and prevented a flurry of runs at the end of the innings de- spite having wickets in hand.

A solid first wicket partnership of 73 from Linsey DaCosta (24) and Silva (59) got the South off to a great start with Crowe (26) continuing the momentum after the dismissal of DaCosta before being removed by Sam Cotton. In a dramatic collapse the South lost five wickets for just five runs and looked destined to lose before Short and Lynch combined.

Short (31*) was accompanied by Naomi Lynch (24) at the crease andcombined for a 31 run partnership to steady the innings and lead South to victory. Game Three— 1st November With the series travelling to Riverside Oval, the Greater North took a 2-1 lead with a one wicket win over the South

The Greater North got off to a positive start with the ball, dismissing the big wicket of Da- Costa cheaply with the score on 11. The South were able to get some momentum from Crowe (28) before she was dismissed with the score on 85. In the latter overs, the South got the scoreboard ticking over with a solid partnership between Thomasa Corrie (30) and Pyke (75) to set a competitive total of 9/241. Celeste Raack was the pick of the North’s bowlers, claiming 4/41.

In the Greater North’s reply, South’s bowling attack of Short (2/34) and Pyke (2/27) both bowled tightly to have North reeling at 3/38 after the first 10 overs. The experi- ence of Moloney (90) and Thompson (51) steadied for the North with the pair putting on a 127 run partnership. After the dismissal of Thompson, Moloney dug in as she contin- ued to lose partners. Joining Moloney at the crease, an un- flustered Raack (29*) nonchalantly dispatched a four on the second last ball of the innings to get the Greater North over the line

Game Four— 15th November The Greater North cruised to a six wicket victory in Latrobe to take the series win for the first time since inception.

From the start, the South struggled to get on top of the bowling with only Heather Knight providing any resistance, top scoring with 25. Blazely fought hard to keep South’s innings ticking over before succumbing to Hepburn, who returned figures of 3/19 off 9. With the dismissal of Blazely, Jane Riley came on and took a hat-trick with the last three wicket of the innings to have South bowled out for just 107.

Female cricket continues to head in the right direction. After the Cripps Roar recorded their most successful season since inception, the young Roar team recorded their first win at an U18 Championships this year, defeating the Victo- rian Invitational XI on the second last day of the tournament. The girls chased down 190, with 2 wickets in hand with Erin Fazackerley (the niece of Tas- mania's sole Australian Test representative Kim) leading the way with bat (61) and ball (3- 21) to give Tasmania its first victory. There were some stellar performances across the championships with Emma Manix- Geeves 12th in the batting averages, making 102 runs for the carnival with a highest score of 45. Olivia MacDonald placed 7th in the bowling averages, claiming 10 wickets with best bowl- ing figures of 4-21. In a further coup, New Town's Erin Lawler was selected in the U18 Talent Camp Squad which will see her travel to Brisbane to train at the National Cricket Centre in September. The team also won the Spirit of Cricket Award. http://tcusa.tas.cricket.com.au Email: [email protected]

The TCUSA provides umpires to support the six levels of Premier League cricket ranging from first grade through second, thirds, under-17s, under-15s and Women’s Grade. Currently, the Association has two members on the National Umpires Panel; Sam Nogajski and Mike Gra- ham-Smith. The TCUSA are always in need for new umpires. Umpiring is a rewarding career choice after your playing days are over, with all training provided. There is a clear pathway for umpires in Tasmania to advance to any level they wish to achieve. Be it youth cricket, Grade cricket, WNCL or if you want to reach the highest level you can, the pathway can lead to the National Panel all the way to Test Match Cricket if you wish to put in the effort to reach these levels. Earlier this season, Harvey Wolff was selected to represent Tasmania to stand in a Sydney Grade Match at North Sydney Oval on a NSW/TAS exchange program. This is the 3rd succes- sive session this exchange has occurred, and it has been highly successful. In return, the TCU- SA welcomed Andrew Hamilton from NSW in November, who umpired a two day game at Blundstone Arena. The umpiring ranks have been boosted this year with the appointment of Roy Loh, as Cricket Tasmania’s Umpiring Development and Administration Officer. This appointment shows the commitment from Cricket Tasmania to Umpiring, and the TCUSA welcome this addition as a further step in providing quality umpires to all competitions. Over the course of this season, the TCUSA website has been subject to significant change and development. Whilst the site is still under development and will always be a work in progress, there is an enormous amount of data stored within; including some interesting historical data. To continue to encourage the development of prospective new umpires, as well as existing members’ umpiring knowledge and skills, Cricket Tasmania, conduct a Winter Laws School – run each Wednesday evening over a five week period during July and August. The course is facilitated by the Training, Education and Accreditation Committee under the watchful eye of State Director of Coaching, Richard Widows. If any CTPL club or member is aware of mem- bers retiring or of anyone who may possibly be interested in remaining actively involved in the game, please point them in the direction of the TCUSA – all necessary information can be found on our web site. The TCUSA looks forward to the rapidly approaching 2014/15 finals. We extend our congrat- ulations to North Hobart and New Town on reaching the CTPL Women’s Grand Final and wish them well in their encounter.
