HE Vermon t Antiqu arian Society has cour teou sly permitted the publication of the inter

esting record kept by William G . Shaw of

Vt . Burlington , , during his activity as a pen

sion agent, so far as the notes relate to f 1 soldiers in the War o 1 8 2 . This record has particular value as it includes abstracts of the evidence presented by the claimant . There was no Ver mont law requiring vital records tb be kept by town clerks prior 1 8 0 to 4 , hence attempts to learn the families of soldiers in either the Revolution or the War of 1 8 1 2 frequently are f utile . All who have had occasion to seek genealogical details in Vermont will realize the importance Of this pension evidence . The Volunteers whose names are printed are from the towns of Burlington , Colchester, Huntington , Milton , Under

Hinesbu r h 1 8 . hill , Shelburne , Jericho, and g , and in all , number 9 The contemporaneous accounts of the battle were copied from the newspaper files in the Fletcher Free Library at Bur lin t n g o .

By the kindness of Mr . Henry L . Sheldon , we are enabled

Of to add to the appendix , the payrolls many companies from

Vt . regiments , stationed at Burlington , , during the

1 War of 1 8 2 .

The acknowledgements of the editor are due to Messrs .

Mac do no u h Rodney and Augustus R . g for the reproduction of the

d n h picture of Commodore Mac o o u g . This is from the portrait painted by Gilbert Stuart , now in the Century Club , . The pictu re of the battle of Plattsburgh is from an old print and is used by permission of Col . C . S . Forbes .

! E GLORIOUS INTELLIG NCE . The anxiety of the public to learn the particulars of the late splendid

to ‘ u b victory over the British squadron on this Lake, has induced us p lish the following, which are all that have come to our knowledge .

’ 1 l th O f On Sunday , the ever memorable September, the enemy s

u M. u squadron was discovered abo t eight o clock, A . , standing p the lake with a favorable breeze, under a press of sail . Every preparation was made by our gallant Commodore to give them a warm and cordial recep tion ; with his squadron at anchor he awaited their approach . The enemy soon made their appearance o f? Cumberland Head and bore down for our squadron— the enemy ’ s two largest vessels taking a position to attack the Saratoga , our flag ship . The first broadside from her killed the British Commodore (Downie)and her fire continued so spirited and

’ fia nc e Co n . well directed that the enemy s flag ship , the , soon after struck At this time the whole broadside guns of the Saratoga next to the enemy

’ were completely unmanageable . The enemy s brig continued her fire . 4 8 Acco u nts of th e B a ttl e Of Pla ttsb u rgh

Our Commodore Slipped his cable and wore round ; two broadsides c o m

elled e m p the brig to follow the example of the Co nfianc . In the eantime

’ the Preble compelled one of the enemy s Sloops to strike . The other grounded on Hospital Island just before the battle ended , and was taken

’ O f possession of by some our Gallies . The enemy s Gallies , except two

! PARTICULARS OF THE LATE D ISASTROUS AFFAIR ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

C o n fian c e The brave and lamented Captain Downie , in the , led our small flotilla in battle in a gallant style , and as far as talents , the

O f valor British tars , and enthusiastic devotion to their country , could command victory , the most successful event was reasonably expected . ffi ’ That noble o cer fell in his country s cause , the second shot , but his

who n place was ably filled by his Lieut . continued the e gagement with

O f unabated vigor, and was in the act laying alongside the largest ship of

Co nfia nc e the enemy , when the rudder of the was unshipped by a shot

Co nfianc e from the enemy . The Linnet , a small brig, which with the , was the only vessel of any size in our flotilla , went ashore ; in this state

C o n fian c e lying like a log on the water, the maintained the unequal contest with the whole flotilla of the enemy , in which were 4 vessels of

r large size . History produces nothing superior to the valor and gallant y of the o flic ers and crew of the Co n fia nc e ; suffice it to say that she was

’ literally fought to the water s edge ; and if accounts are true , there

9 remained b u t thirty of her men unhurt at the end of 5 hours fighting .

Such men will bring down the Americans , as their fathers heretofore have done the Dutch , who without disparagement , were at one time better sailors than our unnatural foe . Would that a veil could be drawn over 52 Accou nts Of th e B a ttl e Of Pla ttsb u rgh the scene on shore !but it must afford a sad tale in the page of British

! O flic ers O f history The scientific , brave Generals , , and soldiers the

’ Duke of Wellington s army , and the Others who have before fought in our cause in the Canadas , did everything which depended on them to

’ c rt Of support the noble flo s their brothers on the water . That dis t in u ished o fli- g cer, General Robinson , who has been twice wounded this year on the other continent , with part of his brigade , had braved all dan ger in an assault . Some of the picquet Fort were heretofore away , and a few minutes more would have given up the fortifications , with an

s O f immen e train artillery into our hands , and every American must have a . was fallen , or been made prisoners It thought necess ry to check the

w e n o w ardor of the troops, and must instantly redouble our energies to obtain the command of the Lake , or with humility await our future destiny . E!TRACTS FROM GENERAL ORDERS ISSUED BY GEN .

A !. ALE MACOMB , AT PL TTSBURGH ,

1 1 8 1 SEPTEMBER 4 , 4

The Governor General of the C a nadas a nd Commander in Chief

A n of the British forces in North merica , havi g invaded the Territories of the United States , with the avowed purpose of conquering the country

n as far as Crown Point and Tico deroga , there to Winter his forces with

t a view to fur her conquest , brought with him a powerful army and

flo till a — an m m en l , army a ounting to fourteen thousand , complete y equipped and accompanied by a numerous train O f artillery and all the

w ar - engines of , men who had conquered in France , Spain , Portugal ,

m s the Indies , and in various other parts of the Globe , and led by the o t distinguished Generals of the British army . A flotilla also , superior to

u in m o rs vessels , men , and guns , had deter ined at once to crush us both by land and by water . ! The Governor General appeared before the village of

Plattsburgh , with his whole army , and on the eleventh , the day fixed for the general attack , the flotilla arrived . ’ 8 The enemy s flotilla at in the morning passed Cumberland Head ,

o f? n and at 9 engaged our flotilla at anchor in the bay the tow , fully confident of crushing in an in stant the whole of our naval force ; but

Ma c do n o u h our gallant Commodore g in the short space of two hours , obliged the large vessels to strike their colors , whilst the gallies saved

w a s themselves by flight . This glorious achievement in full view of the several forts , and the American forces had the satisfaction of Witnessing 54 Accou nts Of th e Battl e of Plattsb u rgh

the Victory . The British army was also posted on the surrounding heights , that it could not but behold the interesting struggle for dominion on the Lake . At the same hour the fleets engaged , the enemy opened his batteries on our Forts , throwing hundreds of shells , balls and rockets and attempted at the same time to cross the Saranac k at three different points to assault the works . At the upper ford he was met by the Militia and Volunteers , and after repeated attempts was driven back with con d l si erab e . loss in killed , wounded and prisoners At the Bridge near the Village he was repulsed by the pickets and brave riflemen under Captain

Grovenor and Lts . Hamilton and Riley , and at the Bridge in the town , he was foiled by the guards , Block Houses, and the Artillery of the forts , served by Capt . Alexander Brooks , Capts . Richards and Smith , and

’ fi Lieuts . . Mountford , Smyth and Cromwell The enemy s re was return ed with effect from our batteries and by sunset we had the satisfaction to

retir silence seven batteries which he had erected , and to see his column

Of . ing to their camps , beyond the reach our guns

! Thus beaten by land and by water, the Governor General withdrew

' his Artillery and raised the siege ; at 9 at night sent Ofl his heavy baggage and under cover of darkness, retreated with his whole army towards

Canada, leaving his wounded on the field , and a vast quantity of bread ,

flour and beef which he had not time to destroy, besides a quantity of H bombshells , shot , ints and ammunition of all kinds, which remain at the batteries and lie concealed in the ponds and rivers . As soon as his retreat was discovered the Light troops, Volunteers and Militia, were in o pursuit , and followed as far as Chazy , capturing several drag ons and

O f who soldiers , besides covering the escape hundreds of deserters, con

u e tin still to be coming in . A violent storm and continual fall of rain prevented the brave Volunteers and Militia from further pursuit .

! Thus have the attempis of the invaders been frustrated by a regular Accou nts of th e B attl e Of Pla ttsb u rgh 55

force of only fifteen hundred men , a brave and active body of Militia of

Gen . Of the State of New York , under Mooers , and Volunteers the respectable and patriotic Citizens of Vermont, led by Gen . Strong and other gentlemen of distinction , the whole not exceeding two thousand

five hundred men .

The British forces being now either expelled or captured , the ser

o f vices the Volunteers and Militia may be dispensed with . ! General Macomb cannot however permit the Militia of New York and the Volunteers of Vermont, to depart without carrying with them the high sense he entertains for their merits . The zeal with which they came forward in defence of their Country , when the signal of danger was given by the General , reflects the highest lustre on their patriotism and spirit .

! t The General, in the name of the United S ates , thanks the Vol u nteers and the Militia for their distinguished services, and wishes them

! a happy return to their families and friends . COMMODORE MACD O NO UG H’ S OFFICIAL REPO RTS

t Sir : By Lieut . Commandant Cassin I have the honor to convey to

’ Brittan n ic you the flags of his majesty s late squadron , captured on the

1 l th . . inst by the United States squadron , under my command Also , my despatches relating to that occurrence, which should have been in ffi your possession at an earlier period , but for the di culty in arranging the difie rent statements .

— ir The squadron under my command now lies at Plattsburgh , will hear ffi of considerable diminution , and leave a force su cient to repel any attempt of the enemy in this quarter . I shall wait your order What to do with the whole or any part thereof, and should it be consistent , I beg you will favor me with permission to leave the lake and place me under

’ 1 0 gallantly sustained her full share of the action . At half past o clock ,

the Eagle, not being able to bring her guns to bear, cut her cable , and

anchored in a more eligible position , between my ship and the Ticon

u deroga, where she very much annoyed the enemy , but unfort nately

’ leaving me exposed to a galling fire from the enemy s brig . Our guns

on the starboard side being nearly all dismounted , or not manageable , a

c u t Stern anchor was let go , the bower cable , and the ship winded with a d ’ h fresh broadsi e on the enemy s s ip , which soon after surrendered . Our d broa side was then sprung to bear on the brig, which surrendered in

about 1 5 minutes after. The sloop that was opposed to the Eagle had struck some time

a nd w before , drifted down the line ; the sloop which was ith their galleys

having struck also ; three of their galleys are said to be sunk, the others

o ff. pulled Our galleys were about obeying, with alacrity , the signal to

follow them , when all the vessels were reported to me to be in a sinking state ; it then became necessary to annul the signal to the galleys , and order their men to the pumps .

’ I could only look at the enemy s galleys going o ff in a shattered con

fo r dition , there was not a mast in either squadron that could stand to make sail on ; the lower rigging , being nearly all shot away , hung down as though it had been just placed over the mast heads .

The Saratoga had fifty- five rounds shot in her hull ; the C o nfiance

’ one h u ndred and five . The enemy s shot passed principally just over o u r heads , as there were not twenty whole hammocks in the nettings at t he close of the action , which lasted , without intermission , two hours and

u t wenty min tes .

The absence and sickness of Lieut . Raymond Perry , left me without t he services of that excellent o flicer ; m u ch o u ght fairly to be attributed

’ t o him for his great care and attention in disciplining the ship s crew, Accou nts of th e B a ttle Of Plattsb u rgh 59

ffi as her first lieutenant . His place was filled by a gallant young o cer,

Lieut . Peter Gamble , who I regret to inform you , was killed early in the

I st 2 d action . Acting Lieut . Vallette worked the and divisions of guns

’ a ff with ble e ect . Sailing Master Brum s attention to the springs, and in the execution of the order to wind the ship , and occasionally at the guns ,

’ meets with my entire approbation ; also Captain Young s commanding

mar n e . actin i s . the g , who took his men to the guns Mr Beale, purser, was of great service at the guns and in carrying my orders throughout

’ the ship , with Midshipman Montgomery . Master s Mate, Joshua Justin , had the command of the third division : his conduct during the action

o flicer . Monteath was that of a brave and correct Midshipmen , Graham ,

Williamson , Platt, Thwing , and Acting Midshipman Baldwin , all behaved ffi well , and gave evidence of their making valuable o cers . The Saratoga was twice set on fire by hot shot from the enemy ’ s ship .

I close , sir, this communication with feelings of gratitude for able support I received from every Officer and man attached to

I have the honor to be ,
