GriggsThis 1917 work by Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley is a must-have to any collection on the history and styles of Spanish Renaissance architecture, and is in my opinion the finest work on the subject. This book however, which is a recent reprint of the original 1917 edition does not live up to the standard of being a 'collectible' book. The softbound edition is printed on lightweight bond paper no different than the paper that comes out of a printer or copier, and the scanning work of the original copy is lacking in many respects. Notably weak are the images, plates and line drawings in the book, of which there are more than a hundred. In the reprint edition, these images are often grainy, fuzzy, lacking in contrast, and the close details of line drawings are often lost due to the poor resolution. While I would recommend this book to anyone researching the subject, if you are looking for a formal edition to your library, you are advised to save up and spend the $400 or more for the original. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a book for note-taking, marking-up, or one that you need for research but is expendable, the low price makes this a great deal.
