It has now become a popular piece in its own right, establishing itself not unlike the Warsaw Concerto before it as an audience favorite in the concert repertoire. • A Case of Amnesia in British Heritage Cinema: Ladies in Lavender
BEATA PIĄTEK__________________________________ A Case of Amnesia in British Heritage Cinema: Ladies in Lavender This paper was inspired by some work I have started on history, mem ory and identity combined with my interest in film, which I have been trying to smuggle into our very literary English Department. For some one working on history and identity, heritage cinema is a special treat because it uses carefully selected and stylized images of the past in order to create a sense of identity in the present-day audiences. Heritage is a development in British culture which started in late 1970s with a set of government policies, when the Conservatives under the leadership of Mrs. Thatcher embarked on a campaign to make cul ture, as they understood it, more accessible to the public, and therefore more profitable (Weight 2002:577). In 1983 the National Heritage Act es tablished the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for Eng land, an executive public body commonly known as English Heritage. The Commission defines its goals in the website as follows: • to conserve and enhance the historic environment, • to broaden public access to the heritage, • to increase people’s understanding of the past. The Commission have taken it upon themselves to turn history in its various forms into a tourist attraction, hence the reconstructed Viking villages in York, Roman soldiers in the streets of Chester, but also the preservation of country houses and other historic buildings. As a result of A Case of Amnesia in British Heritage Cinema ... 355 their activities and substantial government funding, during the 1980s the number of listed buildings and museums increased more than ever be fore.

LADIES IN LAVENDER Director: Charles Dance Distributor: Odeon Films Cast: judi D ench, Mag gie Sm ith, Na tascha McE lhone , Dan iel Bruh l Distributor Estimates Availability As: Current Runtime: 103 minu tes Video: November 2005 Country: United Kingdom Ratings: ON PG / BC G / AB PG / SK G / MB NR / QC G / Maritimes PG Language: Eng lish, German and Polish w ith English subtitles In an impressive directorial debut, writer and actor Charles Dance (SWIMMING POOL, GOSFORD PARK) brings to the screen William J. Locke's short story about the effects of a young Polish man's arrival at a seaside English village in the thirties. After his attempt to reach America is thwarted, Andrea (Daniel Bruhl, GOODBYE, LENIN!) ends up in Cornwall, where he is taken in by two elderly sisters: Ursula (Judi Dench, THE SHIPPING NEWS, IRIS, CHOCOLAT) and Janet (Maggie Smith, HARRY POTTER, GOSFORD PARK). At first, Andrea's presence arouses curiosity among the villagers, who are unable to find a plausible explanation for his arrival. Their concerns begin to mount, however, when they learn he is Polish and has befriended a visiting Russian woman (Natascha McElhone, THE TRUMAN SHOW, SURVIVING PICASSO). Dance's acting background is keenly felt in the film's lush textures; he allows the characters to genuinely develop, artfully capturing the tension that arises between the sisters due to Andrea's presence. Smith's flawless portrayal of the elder, more practical sister is beautifully complemented by Dench's performance as a spinster who finds herself in unfamiliar territory, experiencing illogical yet powerful emotions for the much younger Andrea.
