On the plus side, we continued to provide healthcare of the highest quality for our local population. This was recognised by the award of three stars - the highest available score - in the national NHS performance ratings in July 2003 (based upon 2002/03 performance) and by outstanding attainments in the latest survey of NHS Trusts carried out by ‘Dr Foster’, an independent health research organisation, which looks particularly at the quality of services provided. Airedale has retained its position as the best performing Trust in the Northern & Yorkshire region, it was again in the top ten nationally, and it was the best in the country in terms of patient satisfaction. And all this was achieved with clinical staffing levels (doctors and nurses) that are amongst the lowest in the country. On the minus side, the Trust failed to achieve financial balance in 2003/04. This came as no surprise to the Trust Board because we have had an underlying recurrent deficit for the last few years. -

BEATA PIĄTEK__________________________________ A Case of Amnesia in British Heritage Cinema: Ladies in Lavender This paper was inspired by some work I have started on history, mem ory and identity combined with my interest in film, which I have been trying to smuggle into our very literary English Department. For some one working on history and identity, heritage cinema is a special treat because it uses carefully selected and stylized images of the past in order to create a sense of identity in the present-day audiences. Heritage is a development in British culture which started in late 1970s with a set of government policies, when the Conservatives under the leadership of Mrs. Thatcher embarked on a campaign to make cul ture, as they understood it, more accessible to the public, and therefore more profitable (Weight 2002:577). In 1983 the National Heritage Act es tablished the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for Eng land, an executive public body commonly known as English Heritage. The Commission defines its goals in the website as follows: • to conserve and enhance the historic environment, • to broaden public access to the heritage, • to increase people’s understanding of the past. The Commission have taken it upon themselves to turn history in its various forms into a tourist attraction, hence the reconstructed Viking villages in York, Roman soldiers in the streets of Chester, but also the preservation of country houses and other historic buildings. The website of the Council on Undergraduate Research lists more than 200 undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/resources/students/undergraduate_journals/). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and others are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Harvard Political Review). The Elon Journal focuses on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communications. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The first issue was published in spring 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Dialogue Form in Greek Verse Inscriptions with Some Non
1. INTRODUCTION Dialogue epigrams are based on certain communication patterns that are formed by using certain elements of language. In this study, I discuss the linguistic features of these patterns and I provide a typology of dialogue epigrams as a framework for these analyses. I focus on the structure and language of the dialogue verse inscriptions, but I give non-inscribed1 parallels in order to discuss the development of the epigram genre. 1.1 Subject and structure of this study The core element of this study is the dialogue epigram typology that I created. The typology is based on the turn division and on aspects of this division. I have divided the material into three categories, and I discuss the typical features of each type. What kinds of turns form the dialogues? How are the turns marked? What kind of adjacency pairs do the turns form?2 How are these turns (a) linked together with and (b) separated from other pairs in multi-pair epigrams? These are some of the main points of this study. The typology also helps to combine verse inscriptions and non- inscribed epigrams, and to detect the development towards more narrative-based epigrams. This material offers valuable information on the ways to communicate certain facts on monuments, but also about the mutual influence of the monumental and the fictive texts. In order to make my analyses fully comprehensible, I proceed from the general to the specific. Firstly, I briefly discuss the history of epigrams and how dialogue epigrams are presented in this context (Section 1.2).
