Existing in the context of the 2008 financial and subsequent political crisis, both this thesis and my work are situated in an expanded field of graphic design. This research examines the emergence of the terms critical design and critical practice, and aims to develop methods that use criticism during the design process from a practitioner’s perspective. Central aims of this research are to address a gap in design discourse in relation to this terminology and impact designers operating under the banner of such terms, as well as challenging practitioners to develop a more critical design practice. The central argument of this thesis is that in order to develop a critical practice, a designer must approach design as criticism. -

BLACK FURTHER EDUCATION LEADERSHIP GROUP 5th August 2020 Open letter to address systemic racism in further education Open letter to: Rt. Hon. Boris Johnson, Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Gavin Williamson MP, Secretary of State for Education, funders of further education colleges; regulatory bodies & further education membership bodies. We, the undersigned, are a group of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) senior leaders, and allies, who work or have an interest in the UK further education (FE) sector. The recent #BlackLivesMatter (#BLM) global protest following the brutal murder of George Floyd compels us all to revisit how we address the pervasive racism that continues to taint and damage our society. The openness, solidarity and resolve stirred by #BLM is unprecedented and starkly exposes the lack of progress made in race equality since ‘The Stephen Lawrence Enquiry’. Against a background of raised concerns about neglect in healthcare, impunity of policing, cruelty of immigration systems – and in education, the erasure of history, it is only right for us to assess how we are performing in FE. Only by doing so, can we collectively address the barriers that our students, staff and communities face. The personal, economic and social costs of racial inequality are just too great to ignore. At a time of elevated advocacy for FE, failure to recognise the insidious nature of racism undermines the sector’s ability to fully engage with all its constituent communities. The supporting data and our lived experiences present an uncomfortable truth, that too many BAME students and staff have for far too long encountered a hostile environment and a system that places a ‘knee on our neck’. -

Sadly, Beales which opened in Bournemouth in 1881 and its other stores across the country fell into administration. Debenhams which traces its history back to 1778 named many stores shortly to close. Coupled with this, we learn that Boswell & Co in Oxford which dates back to 1738 is almost certain to close with the owners blaming the ‘current economic retail climate’ Times are certainly tough on the High Street have been so for some time, but I can’t help thinking that there are a number of retailers who just cannot seem to move forward with the times and current trends and wonder why they are struggling in the current economy. We all appreciate that On-Line Shopping, High Street Parking Charges and Business Rates are factors as to why retail is failing, however I look at stores such as Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason, where business is very brisk. I recently read an article about Dunelm who defy the gloom of UK retail by posting a major jump in profits. In the 6 months to Dec 28, sales jumped by 6% to £585m with pre- tax profits up 19.4% to £84.9m. Retailers must reinvent themselves to stay, not only, competitive but to become a Destination store. With some many retailers, it is matter of creating ‘Retail Theatre’. -

Draft paper Elisabete Mendes Silva Polytechnic Institute of Bragança-Portugal University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Portugal [email protected] Power, cosmopolitanism and socio-spatial division in the commercial arena in Victorian and Edwardian London The developments of the English Revolution and of the British Empire expedited commerce and transformed the social and cultural status quo of Britain and the world. More specifically in London, the metropolis of the country, in the eighteenth century, there was already a sheer number of retail shops that would set forth an urban world of commerce and consumerism. Magnificent and wide-ranging shops served householders with commodities that mesmerized consumers, giving way to new traditions within the commercial and social fabric of London. Therefore, going shopping during the Victorian Age became mandatory in the middle and upper classes‟ social agendas. Harrods Department store opens in 1864, adding new elements to retailing by providing a sole space with a myriad of different commodities. In 1909, Gordon Selfridge opens Selfridges, transforming the concept of urban commerce by imposing a more cosmopolitan outlook in the commercial arena. Within this context, I intend to focus primarily on two of the largest department stores, Harrods and Selfridges, drawing attention to the way these two spaces were perceived when they first opened to the public and the effect they had in the city of London and in its people. I shall discuss how these department stores rendered space for social inclusion and exclusion, gender and race under the spell of the Victorian ethos, national conservatism and imperialism. -

The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from le ft to right in equal sections w ith a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

We collected more than 100 Ryelands on Wednesday 4 March to work with reviews within an hour alone. Full credit goes a group of primary school children to test out to Kian Riley who not only collected the most mobile Apps that they had developed in class. reviews, but also gained the highest average TRIPS rating for his App.’ The App they presented to the school children was intended to help young children perform Samantha Francis, Assistant Principal and Head arithmetic with whole numbers between 1 and of Maths at Oasis Academy Ryelands was very 02 12.
