MAKING MY HISTORY Guide action for volunteer Translation note - Unfortunately there is no translation for the children’s books and activities mentioned in this guide. Daddy, tell me a little story? I expected my father arrives with an insistent request, every night at every single day, throughout my childhood. Even if I was tired, passing the bedtime, I kept my eyes wide open so he could with his stories, pack my sleep and feed my dreams. No fantastic creatures or spectacular routes, she tell me tenderly, always with the same tone: "I stayed nine months resting before you born, and at the maternity I counted the fingers of your hands and feet to see if my little baby was born perfect. Due the joy, I kissed one by one!”. That was my history, and being mine, I was so much desired as feared. It was more about cats, horses or fish that I asked myself, but about what my mother felt for me, my place in my family and in the world. I'm sure these histories, real and fictional, were instrumental in my development and dreams that I, as a child, designed for my future. Many years later, I had the opportunity to closely know shelters and I noticed that in some of them, they poorly know the histories of the children that are accepted, and even less say something about it.

  • Shelters in the Future: a National Conversation
OCTOBER 2019 SHELTERS IN THE FUTURE: A NATIONAL CONVERSATION Women’s Shelters Canada (WSC) developed the Shelters of the Future Project to examine the mul- tiple roles that violence against women (VAW) shelters and transition houses1 play in supporting and protecting women who are victims of violence. This was a three-year project funded by the Department for Women and Gender Equality (WAGE, formerly Status of Women Canada) from June 2016 to June 2019. One of the project’s main goals was to build a comprehensive nation- al profile of VAW shelters through a national survey and a national consultation process. To mark the end of the project, WSC planned a working meeting called Shelters in the Fu- ture – an opportunity for representatives from VAW shelters and partner organizations to come together to honour the past, exam- ine the present, and look to the future. Fifty participants gathered in Ottawa on May 2-3, 2019 to take part. An album of photos can be found here. 1Across the country, some provinces and territories use the term “shelter” while others use “transition house” to describe VAW resi- dential and outreach facilities and services. For simplicity, the term “shelter” will be used in this report. 1 Honouring the Past Participants attended a lunch and panel discussion honouring the founders of Canada’s first wom- en’s shelters, with the Honoura- ble Maryam Monsef, Minister of WAGE. Margo Goodhand, author of Runaway Wives and Rogue Feminists, introduced the founders or their representatives: Ardis Beaudry (Edmonton Women’s Shelter, AB), Janet Currie (Ishtar Transition House, BC), Thérèse Dallaire-Laplante (Carrefour pour Elles, QC), Lorraine Kenaschuk (Saskatoon Interval House, SK), Natalie McBride (National Aboriginal Circle Against Family Violence), and Lynn Zimmer (To- ronto Interval House, ON).

Since 2010, Shelter Music Boston has been bringing their classical chamber music to residents at homeless and wellness shelters. Three fulltime members of the group make up the core of Shelter Music Boston, with a few musicians who play on occasion. Violinist Julie Leven, the executive and artistic director, started the organization four years ago due to a lack of musical jobs at the time. She was working on an organic farm with Rebecca Strauss, a violist and violinist in the group, when the two began discussing the state of their musical careers.

Chase Simpson (vocals/guitar) Josh Jove (vocals/guitar) Sebastian Harris (drums Jacob Pillot (bass) The Shelters united in Los Angeles in 2014, a band of young men inspired by a shared love of music and the glorious city they call home. They set out writing songs, starting with little more than determination but soon conjuring up a fresh and unified sound that reflects the past, present and future of Los Angeles rock 'n roll. As Paste Magazine editor-in-chief Joshua Jackson wrote recently when reviewing the The Shelters’ debut EP, that sound is “fuzzy, bluesy and melodic…It’s as if the Laurel Canyon harmonies of the 1970s spent the glam rock ‘80s in The Viper Room on the Sunset Strip before getting a 2015 update in Silverlake.” Chase Simpson was born and raised in Los Angeles. Hungry to meet his musical kindred spirits, he would find them in Josh Jove and Sebastian Harris. Josh grew up in Florida and eventually came to LA, spending years navigating life as a working musician. Sebastian comes from Topanga Canyon, CA and played in his fair share of bands before finding a profound connection playing with Chase and Josh. Jacob Pillot, also a native Angeleno, eventually joined to round out the lineup on bass. The Shelters soon found the ear of one of LA’s musical heroes, Tom Petty, who signed on to co-produce what will become The Shelters' debut full-length record, to be released in 2016. But first we have The Shelters EP, a collection of four songs from the forthcoming album that Buzzbands.la editor and former LA Times music writer Kevin Bronson says “ought to have fans of guitar rock genuflecting…they are much more, in sophistication and skill, than a garage band…classic, yet current.” The Shelters have been touring throughout 2015 and will continue to spend time on the road this November and into 2016.
