Christ Church Eston with St. George’s Normanby - Team Ministry

A message from the Bishop of , the Right Reverend Paul Ferguson

Thank you so much for your interest in the parish of Eston with Normanby.

The parish is within the deanery of , but stands within the western urban part of the civil borough of and Cleveland. To be its Rector offers an opportunity to combine leadership of a lively and welcoming body of worshippers with engagement in a mixed community of over 18000 people, with their workplaces and schools. The presence of the church, with its availability to all, is vital to the wellbeing and morale of the whole of local society.

Eston with Normanby is ready for new ordained leadership, supported by a strong and forward-looking lay team. There is scope to work with the distinctive characteristics and potential of each building, so that the varied mission offering can be enhanced.

We have few parishes in this part of the Diocese of York that are clearly and distinctively Evangelical, and it is my hope and prayer that together we shall discern the appointment of a wise and caring leader to serve with us, to be with more people in their discipleship walk with Jesus, and to be a public advocate for living faith in God through him.

WELCOME

We are an evangelical church and we believe that the essence of the Gospel consists of the doctrine of salvation by grace solely through faith in Jesus, and his atonement paid for by his cross. We believe in the centrality of the conversion or “born again” experience in receiving salvation through Jesus. We believe in the Bible as God’s revelation to the world, and desire to spread this Christian message throughout the parish. We believe that the gifts of the Spirit are available to us to guide and enable us to demonstrate and advance God’s kingdom in this area. We have two churches within the Team Ministry which are about a mile apart. We are part of the deanery of Middlesbrough. See the links on page 16.

OUR VISION

CHRIST CHURCH ESTON -is to be a beacon to our community.

 A peaceful gathering place at the heart of the community, where everyone receives a warm friendly welcome  A fellowship who receive, celebrate and proclaim God’s word to give light and hope to the community as we walk God’s path together.  An open fellowship with strong links to others, in which God is served with a new freshness.

ST GEORGE’S NORMANBY - is to be an open door to our community.

 A welcoming fellowship where everyone can learn about Jesus and grow in Father God’s love.  A fellowship where worship and prayer are relevant to daily life.  A fellowship where the gifts of the Spirit are exercised to serve one another and the community in order to grow God’s kingdom.

This underpins all that we do in our Team Ministry. Prayer is an important part of our church life, which upholds us and flows through both churches. We need to seek how these vision statements are progressed and developed with the new Rector.

We are a parish with a family atmosphere. We try to be welcoming and generous with the resources we have. This has lead to strong links between us and the community we serve. This is covered in “What we do in the community” on page 11.

We work with other denominations in the community. The Ministers Together group which meets regularly with the aim of breaking down barriers and increasing unity among our local churches. What has been even more rewarding has been seeing the way in which members of Christ Church and St George’s have supported the events that the Ministers have organised. In January last year, many from the parish attended at least one of the events that was arranged for the National Week of Prayer, meeting in a different Church each day to pray, culminating in a joint service in the Salvation Army.

One of our strengths has long been, and still is, the quality and depth of Biblical and spiritual teaching. We have been blessed by a very gifted preaching team, which includes two Lay Readers and lay preachers. Also a team head up a monthly family service at St George’s. We would certainly wish for this to continue into the future. 3

Christ Church Eston with St. George’s Normanby - Team Ministry

To help us remain true to our vision, we would hope to attract a new Rector who would:

Have a Pastor’s heart to minister to both congregations at Christ Church and St George’s.

Be a skilled enabler, to encourage us to discover and develop our Spiritual gifts and ministries to reach our full potential.

Be someone to challenge and work alongside us as we reach out into our local community, and expand that ministry in the way the Lord would want us to move.

Be a gifted and inspirational communicator, a people person.

Be a preacher and teacher of the Gospel.

Be a clear thinker, able to bring unity and integration across the generations and throughout the parish between the two churches.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

Experience in leading a fellowship into closer knowledge of the Lord, and encouraging the gifts of the Spirit.

Experience in working across different traditions and age groups. Being comfortable with leading, equipping, and enhancing acts of worship in a variety of styles.

Becoming the next Rector in Eston with Normanby will have its joys and challenges. This person will be warmly welcomed across both churches in the parish. We are keen to see both congregations grow in quality and quantity. This is our parish, and we want to give our all in supporting the new Rector. We yearn to live up to our vision statement of being a beacon and an open door. This is our passion which we want to progress with our new Rector.

We are praying for you!

Predominantly based at Christ Church, worshipping with my wife and family, I was licensed as a Parish Reader in 2008 and have been an active member of the preaching and leadership teams covering both churches.

I'm Stewart Shaller, one of the Readers in this parish. I've been a Christian since 1977 and head teacher in two Anglican primary schools 1979-84; 1984-96. I was licensed as Reader in 2010 and have worshipped at Christ Church and St. George’s since 2016.

WHO’S WHO THE PARISH STAFF WARDENS

Hi, I’m Jason Robinson, I have been a member of Christ Church and St George’s for some 26 years. I am also one of four parish Churchwardens again predominantly looking after Christ Church, a post I have held on and off for 15 years.

Hi, my name is Elaine Marley I am a Churchwarden at Christ Church. I started attending St George’s 31 years ago after giving my life to the Lord at the Billy Graham event Mission . I have had several roles in the church starting with a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, member of the PCC, one of the leaders at the playgroup Big Ted. I love my church Life and family and don’t think I could function without them. The Lord is central to my life, he is my rock.

Hi, my name is Margaret Hill. I am into my fourth year as Churchwarden. I am into my twenty-sixth year of running a youth group for 5-11 year olds. I am also part of our Big Ted team, for children from 0-4 years; we have been running this for four years now. I am also part of the food bank team. I enjoy doing all of those things because I feel called by God to be a servant to the people He has sent to us at different times.

Hi, I’m Mike Cawley. This is my second time as a Warden at St George’s. My first term as Warden covered around 18 years and I have worked with two Rectors over that time. I’m retired and this allows me to be more involved in everyday parish running and support. I have worked for many years as a youth worker in the parish, and now lead the 18-30’s group – HOUSE.

WHAT WE DO IN THE COMMUNITY CHRIST CHURCH

COFFEE MORNING

Our Tuesday coffee morning at Christ Church offers a warm friendly atmosphere, and the Team are definitely Hosts with the Most!! Over the last year we’ve served coffee every week except the Tuesdays after Christmas and Easter – Everyone is warmly welcome. The coffee morning attracts local people as well as our congregations.

TABLE TOP SALE

This enthusiastic team behind our popular Table Top sale has worked tirelessly to collect crafts, pottery, knick-knacks and curios to raise money to help towards the upkeep of the Church during 2018/9. Refreshments and snacks are served. We find this a great outreach to the community, who support the event monthly. It has been a good opportunity for the team to pray with those who come, and give them any support we can. The Table Top sale is on the last Saturday of the month between March and November, between 9am and 11am.

SUPPORTING THE CHALLENGE RACE

On August 18th 2018, the first Eston Nab Challenge Race was held. We were asked by the Residents Association whether Christ Church Hall could be used for the registration of the runners and it was agreed that we would also open up the Church for the duration and offer refreshments for visitors. This was such a success that the Residents Association asked us to host the event last year. An army of volunteers made tea and coffee from 10am till 3.30pm, which was greatly appreciated. Some good conversations with the runners took place which was a blessing. We received a lovely thank you card from Ann Higgins and Bob Norton, our local councillors.

PARISH SCHOOL ASSEMBLY WORK

Stewart Shaller is working with local Primary schools and delivers assemblies and any support he can to the teaching staff. He is looking to expand this work with Outwood Academy, the Secondary school for our area. Marian Lester, a former Primary School teacher, has maintained excellent links with Teesville Primary School. The School usually holds Christmas, Nativity and Easter Services in St George’s. Marian and Margaret Hill help out with these events; they also lead Prayer space sessions in our Primary schools several times a year.

RAINBOWS, BROWNIES & GUIDES

We are delighted to host thriving Rainbows and Brownies groups in St George’s, and a Guide troop which meets in St George’s during the winter months and at Christ Church in the summer and they can enjoy the use of the Meadow.

ST GEORGE’S

‘BIG TED’ MOTHER AND TODDLER GROUP

(Thursdays 9.15-11.15 am)

Big Ted has been running for 5 years now. It is a first point of contact for local mums with pre-school children. But we also get dads, grandads and other family members coming along. We are often more like a Family and Toddler Group! We have started to leave out a prayer space activity in the church each week and we feel encouraged that some of the adults and children are using it. We meet a practical need in our local community, but also have a clear aim of mission.

We achieve this by:

 Providing a safe and welcoming play environment, intentionally using the worship space.

 Coming alongside the adults, being a sympathetic ear and offering to pray for their needs.

 Singing simple, children’s worship songs and telling a short Bible story, during Big Ted Time.

 We always include a short, Christian message, aimed at the adults. The Big Ted Time has become an established part of our morning routine, accepted and enjoyed by all the parents and carers, even those of little or no faith.

POWER POINT CLUB ages 5 - 11

We have had another good year with lots of new children and exciting times. We did a fundraiser for the children in Ghana. We raised enough money for Mary Smith (co-founder of TAKK trust) to buy some Educational toys. We are going to keep in touch with these children. We had a visit from a special guest on our last night in December. Let’s just say he had a warm welcome!

FOODBANK & CRAFT CAFÉ

We have had another busy year with Foodbank and our coffee morning and it just seems to get busier. Each Friday morning our hall is packed with people socialising, chatting with friends playing pool or crafting in the corner.

The Foodbank team completed a successful “Poolathon” which raised funds for the Next Steps Foodbank Project.

In 2019 we handled approximately 453 Foodbank vouchers feeding over 954 people, which is down to the incredible generosity of people from St George’s, Christ Church, and our neighbouring churches, the local community and our friends at Sainsbury’s (Embleton Court, Redcar).

At Christmas we were able to give families gifts for their children putting smiles on lots of faces. The Scouting Association donated over a hundred selection boxes for the Foodbank clients last year.

One little girl said "I like it here, can I stay for Christmas?"

Our marvellous team work hard every week supplying sandwiches and cuppa's for clients as well as practical and spiritual support to help them with their problems. We are only able to do this due to the prayers and help of the parishioners.

SEWING CLASS

We are a group of ladies who meet to craft each Wednesday night. We have been running for about three years. Anyone is welcome; we can help you to learn a new craft!
