    115 CHINA POP LOVE, PATRIOTISM AND THE STATE IN CHINA’S MUSIC SPHERE ANDREAS STEEN Popular culture in China is highly dynamic, involving individuals and private companies, both local and international, as well as state-governed institutions. The mass media and new communication technologies naturally play an impor- tant role in production, selection and dissemination, while also increasing in- teraction with international trends and standards. Sheldon H. Lu underscores popular culture’s importance in today’s China by emphasizing that it is “a dein- ing characteristic of Chinese postmodernity”.1 To him, three factors are crucial, namely it’s potential to undermine the censorship and “hard-line” cultural he- gemony of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), its rise as a “major player in the commodiication process,” and “its sugar-coated apoliticism, [which] paciies the masses and represses the memory of China’s political reality” (ibid.). Popular cul- ture, therefore, is the battleground of various ideologies, forces and interests. Its ambivalent and complex entanglement with politics, society and the musical in- dustry is also addressed in the work of other scholars, such as Kevin Latham, who expresses that “understanding Chinese popular culture very often requires care- ful attention to how precisely the state is involved in and related to forms of social and cultural activity and practices. Popular culture does not exist outside of or in contrast to the state but very often in a constant and evolving dialogue with it.”2 This article looks at both conlicts and dialogue in the realm of popular music and attempts to lay out the main contours of China’s current popular music scene.

    Imagining the Supernatural Grotesque: Paintings of Zhong Kui and Demons in the Late Southern Song (1127-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) Dynasties Chun-Yi Joyce Tsai Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 ©2015 Chun-Yi Joyce Tsai All rights reserved ABSTRACT Imagining the Supernatural Grotesque: Paintings of Zhong Kui and Demons in the Late Southern Song (1127-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) Dynasties Chun-Yi Joyce Tsai This dissertation is the first focused study of images of demons and how they were created and received at the turn of the Southern Song and Yuan periods of China. During these periods, China was in a state of dynastic crisis and transition, and the presence of foreign invaders, the rise of popular culture, the development of popular religion, as well as the advancement of commerce and transportation provided new materials and incentives for painting the supernatural grotesque. Given how widely represented they are in a variety of domains that include politics, literature, theater, and ritual, the Demon Queller Zhong Kui and his demons are good case studies for the effects of new social developments on representations of the supernatural grotesque. Through a careful iconological analysis of three of the earliest extant handscroll paintings that depict the mythical exorcist Zhong Kui travelling with his demonic entourage, this dissertation traces the iconographic sources and uncovers the multivalent cultural significances behind the way grotesque supernatural beings were imagined. Most studies of paintings depicting Zhong Kui focus narrowly on issues of connoisseurship, concentrate on the painter’s intent, and prioritize political metaphors in the paintings.

Box 123, Broadway NSW 2007, Australia Email: [email protected] Abstract This article examines the rise of celebrity politics in mainland China. It outlines some typologies of Western celebrity politics and considers whether equivalent forms exist in China. It then examines the rise of Chinese politician celebrities and celebrity involvement in the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. An examination of celebrity participation in these forums shows that celebrity politics in China chiefly functions to support government policies, but also reveals a broadening of elite networks and the capacity of those networks to generate public discussion of alternative policies and politics. Rather than supporting claims that celebrity politics is spectacular or theatrical, it demonstrates instead the connections between celebrity and mundane aspects of Chinese governance.
