The idea for this research started in the end of 1980’s, when my research took a cultural turn. During the previous ten years I had been involved mainly with another collective good, environment, and studied the impact of consumer decisions on the environmental problems – very much inspired of my research years in West-Berlin in the beginning of 1980’s. However, for the time being, environmental issues were not yet very popular in the scientific community whether in the United States or Europe, and in marketing and consumer research conferences, my topics usually remained a curiosity. I wanted to turn to a new topic – consumption and marketing of cultural products – which, however, also proved to be rather unknown within economic and management studies. Later on, it has become a rather popular field, and many arts management programs and research projects have been started, especially in European universities. In the end of 1980’s I had learned to know the cultural sociologist Katarina Eskola, who wanted to establish a research centre for contemporary culture at the University of Jyväskylä to encourage sociological research on culture. To speed up the new unit, we decided to start together a multidisciplinary research project on the production and consumption of culture. My share at the Helsinki School of Economics was to take care of the ‘economic’ side of research, in other words, to lead the marketing and management oriented studies of cultural organizations as well as apply consumer theory to the study of cultural consumption (called ECOCULT-project). Katarina Eskola at the Research Centre for Contemporary Culture at the University of Jyväskylä, concentrated on the reception of cultural products, especially in the field of literature. The first years of the project were financed by the Academy of Finland, and the results were published in the series of both universities, the majority, however, in the new series of contemporary culture at Jyväskylä. At that time, edited university series were still considered a proper way to publish empirical research, especially since the cultural turn had not yet fully come true in social sciences, and there were only few publishing forums for interdisciplinary cultural research. 2 The present book is a continuation of that collaborated work, and it displays some interesting pieces of marketing and consumer studies of culture which have not been published elsewhere, with the exception of the papers published in the proceedings of AIMAC (International Association of Management of Arts & Culture) or ACE (Association for Cultural Economics). The collection also includes some papers which are closely connected with the later published dissertations of the authors in this research group (Jyrämä 1999; Taalas 1995; Linko 1998; Sorjonen 2005; Ahola 2007; Addis 2002). The authors perhaps feel somewhat uncomfortable to see their first, ‘explorative’ papers on the topic published after the dissertation. However, these short papers often take up the most relevant aspects of the topic in question. The majority of the research and papers in this book come from the last ten years, with a couple of exceptions from some years earlier. The articles cover empirical research of museums and other visual arts organizations and art consumers in Finland. The book is divided in four parts. The first part describes the changes in the social role of the museum and art field. The second part looks more closely at the art fields’ problems and alternative strategies from the management point of view. The third part studies how art and museum consumers see and experience the various forms of art supply and distribution channels. The fourth, final part goes into the questions of economic efficiency and performance and their measurement difficulties in museums and other art organizations. Although we deal with marketing and management problems of cultural organizations, our approach is more or less interdisciplinary, and references are made both to management and cultural studies. The data and method parts of the articles are very briefly described, and the main emphasis is given to interpreting the results. In this sense the articles differ from typical journal research articles. Since the research is mostly explorative, our results and conclusions remain tentative. However, hopefully they give ideas and encourage to further studies in the expanding field of cultural management and consumption studies. We also hope that this collection of interdisciplinary research work will inspire many new cooperative research efforts in the new Aalto University starting its activity in 2009. Aalto University is a composite of three well-known universities in the Helsinki area: Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology, and University of Art and Design. Interdisciplinary cross-fertilization between ideas from management, arts and technology 3 has been a leading motive behind this merger. The authors of this report have worked together in a very similar spirit. The discussion is based on previous research and on interviews with the managers of six European museums of modern and contemporary art. The museum sector is very much a field of activity typical of Western culture. Although the word "mouseion" (a holy place for muses) goes back to antiquity, museums in the modern sense were originally a product of the Renaissance, during which period an interest grew in humanly produced artifacts and the scientific systematization and classification of artworks (e.g. the Medici collections in Florence). However, it was only after the French revolution that private collections, previously owned only by the aristocracy, were opened to the public. Several public museums sprang up in nineteenth century Europe; the Louvre

    Studienreise des Clusters Holzbau Rheinland-Pfalz nach Finnland im März 2011 Auf Initiative der Zimmererinnung Rhein-Westerwald wurde in Kooperation mit der Kreishandwerkerschaft Rhein-Westerwald zusammen mit dem Baugewerbeverband und dem Holzbaucluster Rheinland-Pfalz eine Studienreise nach Finnland organisiert. Dabei war es Ziel, Produktions- und Vermarktungsmethoden in einem Land zu studieren, das stärker vom Wald geprägt ist und einen deutlich höheren Holzbauanteil aufweist, als es in Deutschland der Fall ist. In Finnland existieren eine stärkere industrielle Prägung des Bauens, höhere klimatische Anforderungen und eine besondere Designkultur. Der Cluster Forst und Holz hat eine deutlich höhere Bedeutung als bei uns und die Exportanstrengungen sind beträchtlich. Letzteres betrifft nicht nur reine Sägewerksprodukte, sondern mehr und mehr ganze Bausysteme. Über Kapitalbeteiligungen, Mehrheitsübernahmen, aber auch den Ausbau eigener Kapazitäten im Kern Europas wird die Expansion gezielt in Angriff genommen. Kurz gesagt: mit Finnland muss man rechnen und so war es Ziel der Exkursion, den Teilnehmern anschaulich zu machen, welche Bedeutung dies für das jeweils eigene Unternehmen hat. Das Fachprogramm sowie die Gesamtorganisation der Fachexkursion wurde vom Obermeister der Zimmererinnung Rhein-Westerwald, Herrn Volker Höhn, ausgearbeitet und geleitet. Durch das Vorstandsmitglied der Zimmererinnung Johannes Kern konnte der deutschsprachige Finne Herr Matti Naukarinnen als Begleiter der Delegation gewonnen werden. Als ehemaliger Deutschland-Geschäftsführer der Firma Honka-Blockhaus führte er die Gruppe nicht nur mit exzellenten Kenntnissen seines Heimatlandes, seine Kontakte zu den zu besichtigenden Betrieben und Holzbauobjekten waren für die Teilnehmer von großem Wert. Der fachliche Teil des Programmes war somit in seiner Gesamtheit von kaum zu überbietender Qualität. Der Besuch war in jeder Hinsicht positiv und die fachliche Offenheit sowie die Gastfreundschaft unserer finnischen Kollegen sehr beeindruckend.

The aim of the FinFib2 study was to evaluate whether treatment of patients with AF in ED is consistent with the contemporary European Society of Cardiology (ESC) management guidelines. Here we report the results of antiarrhythmic drug therapy (AAD) in ED. Methods: All patients within the two-week study period whose primary reason for the ED visit was symptomatic AF were included into this prospective multicentre study. Comprehensive data on factors contributing to the treatment of AF were collected, including a data of previous use of ADDs, and changes made for them during a visit in ED. Results: The study population consisted of 1013 consecutive patients (mean age 70 ± 13 years, 47.6% female). The mean European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) symptom score was 2.2 ± 0.8. Rhythm control strategy was opt for 498 (63.8%) and 140 (64.5%) patients with previously and newly diagnosed AF, respectively. In patients with previously diagnosed AF the most frequently used AAD was a beta blocker (80.9%). Prior use of class I (11.4%) and III (9.1%) AADs as well as start or adjustment of their dosage (7.4%) were uncommon.

While on the one hand we see a continuing diversification of expression, we are also seeing the start of trend toward similarity in the creative approach and ideas due to the development of information networks and media. The creators are questioning the fundamental elements of “creativity” as the source of creation. Within this context, there was widespread critical acclaim when the Lyon Dance Biennial 2004 chose a program consisting primarily of artists from what had until recently had been considered the peripheral regions of Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean countries rather than the “mainstream” countries of France and Germany. This move was considered an apt reflection of present conditions. In fact, there is increasing attention coming to focus today on the refreshing new expressions coming out of these areas of Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean countries, which are indeed possessed of new, untapped appeal. Among these up and coming dance nations, Finland has shown especially vital growth in recent years. It is dance that is energetic and strong-boned or, you would not call it stylish or adroit, but it stands out among the dance styles of Europe with a unique vibrancy that draws from an accentuated presence of the body. For example, among the performances I saw during the 2005 season, the one that perhaps left the strongest impression was Borrowed Light by one of Finland’s representative choreographers, Tero Saarinen.

    Finnish sensibility to China Helsinki and Shanghai based studio, PES-Architects, have completed their seventh project in China: the Fuzhou Strait Culture and Art Centre. Fuzhou is the capital and one of the largest cities in Fujian Province. It has been ranked one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the world. In 2013, the Fuzhou Government hosted an international invited competition for the Strait Culture and Art Centre with the goal of strengthening the cultural image of the city and the Mawei New Town development area. PES-Architects’ winning proposal takes inspiration from the petals of a jasmine blossom, the city flower of Fuzhou. The flower is manifested in the formal language and colour of the architecture takes inspiration from the petals of a jasmine blossom, the city flower of Fuzhou. The five jasmine petal venues — opera house (1600 seats), concert hall (1000 seats), multi-functional theatre, art exhibition hall and cinema centre — are linked by a Cultural Concourse and a large roof terrace with public services and commercial and leisure facilities. The roof terrace is accessible via two ramps from the Jasmine Gardens as well as from the Central Jasmine Plaza, providing a seamless connection from the complex to the riverfront of the Minjiang River. On the underground level, a promenade-like route along the Liangcuo flood river connects the landscape to the interiors, as well as providing a connection between the metro station and the Centre.
