Where part of a thesis is to be embargoed, please specify the part and the reason. - iii - Abstract Pauline scholarship often overlooks the fact that from the Levitical sacrificial perspective “sacrifice” and “curse” are diametrically opposed concepts. A sacrifice must be “holy and acceptable to God” (Rom 12:1). Arguably, Paul describes Jesus or his blood as a sacrifice to God (1Cor 5:7; Rom 3:25). In this light, how might we understand his assertion that Christ became a “curse” on the cross (Gal 3:13)? The “accursed” person who hangs on a tree is impure and defiled and thus totally unacceptable as a sacrifice to God (Deut 21:23; John 19:31). This research argues that the key concept that resolves such potential tensions in Paul’s statements is the “covenant”. Both “sacrifice” and “curse” are covenantal concepts. Sacrificial activities are essential for maintaining the covenant between God and his people. When God’s people sin, sacrifice provides the means to attain forgiveness and to remain in the covenant. However, the covenant can be broken by grievous sins such as idolatry, which result in the loss of the sanctuary and the sacrificial means. Consequently, they would fall under the “curse” of the covenant. This covenantal perspective underlies Paul’s soteriology. This thesis demonstrates that in Paul’s understanding Christ’s death serves both ends: the termination of the Mosaic curse by becoming a curse, and the dedication of his life-blood for the maintenance of the renewed covenant. These two things are related yet not identical. As test cases for this covenantal model, this research examines three Pauline texts. Galatians 3:13 describes the redemption of God’s people from the Mosaic covenantal curse. Deutero-Isaiah envisaged this event as a new “Exodus”, about which Paul talks in 1 Corinthians 5:7. Romans 3:25 illustrates the eschatological Yom Kippur for this new Exodus people consisting now of Jews and Gentiles, which sustains and sanctifies God’s renewed covenant people to the end. - iv - Acknowledgements I am and shall always be obliged to my supervisors for all their help. Religion and Realpolitik: Reflections on Sacrifice Abstract Enduring groups that seek to preserve themselves, as sacred communities do, face a structural contradiction between the interests of individual group members and the survival interests of the group. In addressing existential threats, sacred communities rely on a spectrum of coercive and violent actions that resolve this contradiction in favor of solidarity. Despite different histories, this article argues, nationalism and religiosity are most powerfully organized as sacred communities in which sacred violence is extracted as sacrifice from community members. The exception is enduring groups that are able to rely on the protection of other violence practicing groups. The argument rejects functionalist claims that sacrifice guarantees solidarity or survival, since sacrificing groups regularly fail. In a rereading of Durkheim’s totem taboo, it is argued that sacred communities cannot survive a permanent loss of sacrificial assent on the part of members. Producing this assent is the work of ritual socialization. The deployment of sacrificial violence on behalf of group survival, though deeply sobering, is best constrained by recognizing how violence holds sacred communities in thrall rather than by denying the links between them.

    The Concept of Atoning Death in the New Testament: Pagan or Jewish? Tony Costa, B.A., M.A., PhD (cand) 1. Introduction The two most important events in the New Testament (hereafter NT) are clearly the death and resurrection of Jesus. From an early period, the death of Jesus took upon itself soteriological meaning in the Church. In what scholars believe to be an early creed in Rom. 4:25, “who [Jesus] was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification ” we see the both the belief in the death and resurrection of Christ. It has become common place particularly among rabbinic Jewish scholars to dismiss the idea of the death of Jesus as having salvific significance on the grounds that this notion is utterly “unJewish” and without support in the Old Testament (hereafter OT) or Hebrew Bible. There has also been criticism among other Jewish scholars that the idea of a human being making atonement for humanity or whose death has redemptive value, is a foreign concept to Judaism. Some charge that this is an example of human sacrifice which they argue would be repugnant to God. While animal sacrifices were and could be legitimately offered to God as seen in the OT, particularly in the book of Leviticus, human sacrifice would certainly be out of the question. Hence, the death of Jesus as a redemptive act is rejected and dismissed as a non-Jewish concept and it is attributed instead to the Greco- Roman pagan world that surrounded the early Christians. But is this really so? 2 As in the case of the resurrection, so in the case of the Christian understanding of the death of Jesus, this premise of pagan derivation is manifestly false.
