And finally, I dedicate this dissertation to Katie, for all of the things. iii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines aviation’s influence on German cultural and social history between 1908 and 1925. Before the First World War, aviation embodied one of many new features of a rapidly modernizing Germany. In response, Germans viewed flight as either a potentially transformative tool or a possible weapon of war. The outbreak of war in 1914 moved aviation away from its promised potential to its lived reality. In doing so, the airplane became a machine which compressed time and space, reordered the spatial arrangement of the battlefield, and transformed the human relationship with killing. Germany’s fliers initially served as observers, noting troop positions in the war’s opening weeks. As the Western Front transformed into static trench warfare, flight, in concert with photography, became a method of gathering intelligence. The camera also shaped the identity and iconography of the aviator both in public and in private photographs. Aviation created a privileged space for combat pilots to engage with, or ignore, the consequences of killing as aerial violence became commonplace. Killing, death, and superstition in the air were repackaged with older cultural tropes to render new violence knowable. The German general staff too, became increasingly obsessed with killing in the air, and this fascination fed a new system for understanding the air war. Germany’s regional divisions were also reflected in aviation and directly influenced both the composition of its air service and the machines issued to its pilots. Aviators were again privileged in their use of cultural markers to signpost individual, local, and national identities. The advent of powered flight entered a complex historical narrative in Germany between 1908 and 1925. My research examines the ways in which powered flight was a disruptive experience for German aviators, and the ways those experiences were repurposed to produce the illusion of reassuring continuities in German popular culture. My work builds on previous histories of German social and cultural history written in the last quarter-century, while incorporating the influence of powered flight to elucidate both continuities and discontinuities within German culture. In doing so, I demonstrate the disruptive role that technology played in Germany, and how German culture responded to it. 2017 marks the latter half of four years of centenary commemorations of the First World War. This period has witnessed an intense production of new historical research regarding the conflict and its broader consequences. Undoubtedly, this prodigious period of historical research will continue well after the anniversaries pass, and it is my hope that this dissertation contributes not only to the history of First World War aviation, but to the much wider historical questions being addressed in the current conversation.1 In addition to intervening in the historical question of the war’s wider consequences, my dissertation builds on the original request for a wider and culturally sophisticated history 1 The ongoing historiography of the First World War features works from a variety of methodological approaches, some of which inform my own research. See also, Birger Stichelbaut and Piet Chielens, The Great War Seen from the Air in Flanders Fields, 1914-1918 (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2016). 1 of aviation, first made by James Hansen.2 The response to his call produced a body of literature focused on aviation’s social, cultural, economic, political, and military history. My dissertation contributes to this call by examining the ways in which powered flight shaped the culture of German aviators and how that relationship influenced broader cultural markers in German society. Consequently, my research employs multiple perspectives to go beyond considering flight from a strictly military or industrial standpoint, to examine the ripple effect of aviation across social, cultural, economic, gender, and geographic divides. My approach draws on the cultural traditions of the long nineteenth century.3 In doing so, I frame aviation as a technology that built on the rapidly shifting landscape of the previous century. In doing so, aviation created new discourses while drawing on older cultural markers to make a new paradigm knowable. Hansen’s call for a wider view of aviation sparked a vibrant historical conversation. Histories of powered flight were initially a one-sided monologue which focused exclusively on technical, mechanical, economic, or industrial narratives. The popular acceptance of silent films and their contents is traced. through the development of film narrative and the use of music in the early 1900s. The silent era is labeled as a consequence of technological and economic chance and this chance is made to account for the accelerated development of the medium's visual communicative capacities. The thirty year time lapse between the development of film and the -e of live human voices can therefore be regarded as the critical stimuli which pushed the motion picture into becoming an essentially visual medium in which the audial channel is subordinate to and supportive of the visual channel.     GRETCHEN UND GERMANIA HOMMAGE AN HENNY PORTEN Wie kaum eine andere deutsche Schauspielerin hat Henny Porten (1890 – 1960) zwischen 1910 und 1933 das populäre Bild der Frau in Deutschland verkörpert und geprägt. Bewunderer hatte sie in allen Bevölkerungsschichten: Soldatenräte ließen sie in den November- kämpfen 1918 hochleben; Reichstagspräsident Ebert besuchte ihre Dreharbeiten; und bei ihren Filmpremieren erlebten die Innenstädte Massenaufläufe. Ironisch und ernsthaft augenzwinkernd schlug 1922 der Literat Kurt Pinthus im linksliberalen Tagebuch vor: »Man mache Henny Porten zum Reichspräsidenten! Hier ist eine Gestalt, die in Deutschland volkstümlicher ist als der alte Fritz, als der olym- pische Goethe es je waren und sein konnten... Hier ist eine schöne Frau, die als Vereinigung von Gretchen und Germania von diesem Volke selbst als Idealbild eben dieses Volkes aufgerichtet wurde«. Bereits seit 1906 war die junge Porten in Dutzenden von Tonbildern aufgetreten, in nachgestellten kurzen Opernszenen, zu denen im Kino der entsprechende Musikpart aus dem Grammophon erklang. Mit großen Posen und Affektdarstellungen eiferten die Darsteller dieser frühen, oft nur eine Minute langen Filme den bekannten Mimen der Hoftheater nach. Bekannte, zur Ikone geronnene Darstel- lungsklischees großer Gefühle nahm die junge Filmschauspielerin auf und formte daraus ein filmspezifisches Vokabular stummen Spiels, eindringlicher Gesten und Blicke. Portens Gebärdensprache betont die vereinzelte Geste und isoliert Bedeutung, die nur in Gip- felmomenten beschleunigt, ansonsten aber ausgespielt oder ver- langsamt wird.     CHAPTER 3. Film Sound Preservation: Early Sound Systems 3.1 Film Sound Preservation In the introduction I argued that the nature of film sound consists of different dimensions: the textual and material dimensions, the human and technological dimensions, the institutional, experiential and memorial dimensions. Each of these should be taken into account in preservation and presentation practices. Some of these dimensions were investigated in the first two chapters, where I outlined a set of key concepts related to recorded sound that I derived from social and artistic sound practices as well as media theories: the noise of the material carriers and technological devices, cleaned and cracked sounds, the notion of soundscape and high fidelity, and the concepts of media memory and audiovisual trace. In the following chapters I will further analyze the nature of film sound and its core dimensions beginning with the analysis of film sound preservation and presentation case studies. In this chapter, I examine preservation and restoration projects of films where the issue of sound is particularly relevant, while chapter four analyzes the work of film heritage institutions with respect to film sound presentation. The case studies discussed here are prompted by the following questions: how can we preserve and restore film sound materials? What are the different approaches to film sound preservation and restoration? What are the problems and defects of different film sound carriers and apparatuses? Which kind of actions can be taken to solve those problems? How can the actions undertaken to preserve film sound be recorded and documented? How is it possible to exhibit and display film sound in present-day theatres? The answers to these questions as provided by the case studies will contribute to the definition of the nature of film sound, which will be elaborated in chapter five.

The author of this book is the son of Hitler’s governor of Poland and leading Nazi, Hans Frank, one of the main instigators of the Holocaust, personally responsible for Auschwitz—the camp and what went on there. Denouncing his father, Niklas Frank also wrote a bbc documentary ‘My Nazi Legacy’. In his latest book, Dunkle Seele, feiges Maul [The Dark Souls of German Nazis], Frank investigates what hap- pened to ex-Nazis in the immediate postwar years in Germany. While his father was hanged after the Nuremberg trials for war crimes, most other leaders of the National Socialist movement got off virtually scot free. Based on substantial archival studies, Niklas Frank takes the Spruchkammerverfahren or Denazification Hearings, set up precisely to make sure that did not happen, to task. Between 1946 and 1950 thousands of ex-Nazis appeared in front of such hearing. All but a few either served no time at all for their criminal acts or received short sentences. That the Nazis were not totally eradicated and punished beggars the imagination. These so-called Denazification Hearings were linked to the word Persilschein, a German idiom deriving from a brand of laundry detergent, Persil. To gain a Persilschein means to be clean, forever purged of schmutz. Thousands of ex-Nazis were eager to gain a certificate [Schein] that said ‘iv’ or ‘v’, not guilty or spar- kling clean. The five classification were: i major offenders (Hauptschuldige); ii offenders: Nazi activists, militants, or profiteers (Belastete); iii lesser offenders (Minderbelastete); iv followers (Mitläufer); and finally, v exonerated persons (Entlastete).

This was a period of intense growth for the German film industry. From a novelty feature in travelling exhibitions at the end of the nineteenth century, film was a part of the everyday lives of millions of Germans by the First World War. Unified only in 1871, Germany was a young state and attempts to define, popularize, and harness its national image formed a central and contested aspect of German political culture. This dissertation argues that the conflicting cinematic representations of the German nation in this period should be understood within the larger context of Wilhelmine political history and that invocations of the nation were instrumental in the development of the German cinema. Kaiser Wilhelm II, political pressure groups on the radical right, foreign and domestic film producers, and, ultimately, military and civilian authorities of the German state all promoted cinematic visions of the nation that were overlapping, complementary, and conflicting. Kaiser Wilhelm II was Germany’s first film celebrity and personified onscreen a nation of monarchists and military might, yet his media-constructed political authority was overshadowed by his film stardom.
