Three methodological tools are used to evaluate the effectiveness of insect subfossils as palaeoeconomic indicators: palaeoecology, biogeography, and isotopic analysis. Underpinning each of the methodological approaches is the premise that specific insect fauna are notably stenotopic in their distributional range. By superimposing the physiological and ecological habits of modern species over the archaeological record, they may effectively serve as analogues to interpret palaeoentomological evidence. On that basis, the archaeological presence of stenotopic insects may reliably be employed as indicators of their associated habitats. Furthermore, the examination of the archaeological remains of the specific monophagous or oligophagous species that are known to feed on human exploitable resources may provide direct or indirect evidence towards the presence of those commodities. For example, Sitophilus granarius may stand as an indication of the presence of stored cereal grains. In each of the methodological approaches, the palaeoentomological remains proved promising as a tool for suggesting probable socio-economic activity. However, the approaches differed in the precision and confidence of their results. The palaeoecological approach provided the most tentative assertions; where as the 3 isotopic method allowed for formulation of the most scientifically-grounded conclusions. In addition to the three applied methodologies, the thesis explored the potential for palaeoentomological remains to yield assayable genetic sequences. Ancient DNA was recovered from preserved Roman and medieval specimens. If aDNA preservation is widespread in palaeoentomological remains, a phylogeographic method is conceivable as a means for assessing past trade and migration. 4 Table of Contents Damit ergibt sich, daß in der Zeit 1838 — 1990 im untersuchten Gebiet ca. 1 800 Käferarten registriert wurden. Nach der Veröffentlichung der ersten Ergänzung im Jahre 1989 mit dem Stand der faunistischen Erfassung bis zum 31. 12. 1986 kann nun die zweite Ergänzung der „Fauna Coleoptera des Kreises Altenburg“ vorgelegt werden. Ich halte es für sinnvoll, auch für die zweite Ergänzung die bisherige Form bcizubchaltcn. Wenn bei verschiedenen Arten die Fundjahre noch in die Zeit der vorangegangenen Zusammenstellungen gehören, ist das darin begründet, daß die Determination dieser Exemplare erst später erfolgte oder die Fundmeldungen vorher nicht bekannt waren. Wie bisher weisen die Abkürzungen im Anschluß an die Fundort-Angabe daraufhin, daß Erwin Naumann (N) oder U lrich Poller (P) diese Art nachwiesen. Gehen Fundnachweise auf andere Personen zurück, ist das namentlich oder in Fußnoten vermerkt. Zwei Kreuze (+ + ) weisen darauf hin, daß diese Art erstmals im Kreisgebiet nachgewiesen wurden. Ein Kreuz (-(-) deutet einen neuen Fundort an, ohne Kreuz sind die Arten vermerkt, die seit längerer Zeit wieder nachgewiesen wurden. In dieser zweiten Ergänzung1) sind nur die Arten aufgenommen, die nach dem gegenwärtig gültigen und bekannten nomenklatorischen Stand bzw. von Koleopterologen determiniert wurden, deren fachliche Kompetenz anerkannt ist. (Mesocarabus) problematicus Herbst 1786 is a fairly widespread European endemic species, especially on the Atlantic coast from the northern of Spain until Scandinavia. A recent map, based on the most recent data establishes the geographical distribution. From the eight European subspecies, the most isolated are the island subspecies, those from Faroe Islands (ssp. feroensis Lapouge, 1910) and Iceland (islandicus Lindroth, 1968) but also one continental subspecies from Romania (holdhausi Born 1911). Well represented in Western Europe, particularly in France (3 subsp.), the C. (Mesocarabus) problematicus Herbst 1786 species becomes very localized by going towards the East where is represented only by some relicts stations in Hungary and in Romania. In the last one the represented taxon holdhausi Born 1911, is quoted from eight localities among which two recent confirmed, all situated at high altitude (on 1500-1700 m). This fragmentation of the distribution and the localization in the mountainous zone pose two major questions: causes and anteriority of this residual localization in the refuges zones; genetic origin of this taxon and its link with the other forms of the species.

Sev- enteen species belonging to the genera Atholus Thomson, 1859,Hemisaprinus Kryzhanovskij, 1976, Hister Linnaeus, 1758, Hypocacculus Bickhardt, 1914, Margarinotus Marseul, 1853, Saprinus Erichson, 1834, Tribalus Erichson, 1834, and Xenonychus Wollaston, 1864 were recorded. Specimens were sampled mainly with pitfall traps baited with ephemeral materials like pig dung, decayed fish, and pig carcasses. Several species were collected by sifting soil detritus, sand cascading, and other specialized techniques. Six newly recorded species for the Lebanese fauna are the necrophilous Hister sepulchralis Erichson, 1834, Hemisap- rinus subvirescens (Ménétriés, 1832), Saprinus (Saprinus) externus (Fischer von Waldheim, 1823), Saprinus (Saprinus) figuratus Marseul, 1855, and Saprinus (Saprinus) niger (Motschulsky, 1849) all associated with rotting fish and dung, and the psammophilousXenonychus tridens (Jacquelin du Val, 1853).

ZooKeys 2: 221-238. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.2.14 Abstract Eighteen species of flat bark beetles are now known in Atlantic Canada, 10 in New Brunswick, 17 in Nova Scotia, four on Prince Edward Island, six on insular Newfoundland, and one in Labrador. Twenty-three new provincial records are reported and nine species, Uleiota debilis (LeConte), Uleiota dubius (Fabricius), Nausibius clavicornis (Kugelann), Ahasverus advena (Waltl), Cryptolestes pusillus (Schönherr), Cryptolestes turcicus (Grouvelle), Charaphloeus convexulus (LeConte), Chara- phloeus species nr. adustus, and Placonotus zimmermanni (LeConte) are newly recorded in the re- gion, one of which C. sp. nr. adustus, is newly recorded in Canada. Eight are cosmopolitan species introduced to the region and North America, nine are native Nearctic species, and one, Pediacus fuscus Erichson, is Holarctic. All the introduced species except for one Silvanus bidentatus (Fab- ricius), a saproxylic species are found on various stored products, whereas all the native species are saproxylic.

The dung beetle Aphodius contaminatus has been considered extinct in Fin­ land, owing to the decline in the horse stock. In 1995, I found the species to be widespread in Aland, though it showed an aggregated spatial distribution. I suggest that A. contaminatus is not to be considered a critically threatened species in Finland. Neither does it seem to be a specialist on horse dung- the larva is probably a generalist saprophage. The most likely explanation for the apparent extinction of the species is a seasonal bias in the sampling of dung beetle communities.
