Solon’s reforms included a law which perhaps counter-intuitively banned citizens from staying neutral in cas- es of civil conflict. After reviewing aspects of the law against neutrality debated by historians, the present paper employs the methodology of the economics of conflict to investigate the implications of the law for the stability of the constitutional order initiated by Solon. We ex- amine a stylised model of three social classes, Rich, Middle and Poor, where the former two compete for control of the government, and the Poor may decide to stay neutral or side with either the Middle or the Rich. By solving the model we identify conditions for the Rich to ac- cept the Solonian order or reject it and mount a coup.   • Reading the Rise of Pisistratus: Herodotus .- 
    Histos () - READING THE RISE OF PISISTRATUS: HERODOTUS .- Especially Sophocles and Herodotus were passionately interested in the manifold aspects of ‘power’, which they interpreted through myth and his- tory, using these in their full topical potential to analyze questions of great importance to their audiences. This paper analyzes Herodotus’ story of Pisistratus’ rise to tyranny over the Athenians in these terms. The story is mythic history in the sense that it is largely made up of conventional narrative episodes, sometimes with su- pernatural elements. Yet the contexts of power in which Herodotus sets it determine its shape, and the contextual reading of the story reveals allusions to contemporary debates and realities. This contextual analysis seems more productive than attempts to explain the story in isolation as the product of Athenian propaganda in a narrow sense. The immediate context for the story of the rise of Pisistratus and of the rise of Sparta that partners it is the comparison of their ancestral power. He- rodotus investigates their origins and their power in the time of Croesus, comparing the Athenians under tyranny with the Spartans under Lycurgan eunomia . Croesus in his search for the ‘most powerful’ of the Greeks as his ally against Persia found out that Athens and Sparta were from their origins leaders respectively of the Ionians and the Dorians (..), but that their I am grateful to the Histos team for detailed comments and practical suggestions on presentation. The epics trace things back to beginnings, even if those are only ‘hinges’ in a still longer story; they use speech-exchanges not merely to characterise individuals but also to explore features of their society; the interaction of human and divine is complex, but the narrative focus characteristically rests more on the human level; allusiveness to narratives of earlier and later events also carries explanatory value. Epic and historiography alike also cast light on why readers find such aesthetic pleasure in stories of suffering, brutality, and death. Keywords: Homer, historiography, causation, explanation, intertextuality. t is no secret, and no surprise, that Greek historiography is steeped in Homer: how could it not be so? Epic was the great genre for the sweep Iof human experience, especially but not only in war; Homer was the narrator supreme. There have been many studies of the ways that individual historians exploit Homer to add depth to their work. I have contributed one myself on Herodotus, 1 Maria Fragoulaki writes in this volume on Thucydides, and others have covered writers down to and including the Second Sophistic. 2 Still, when completing a monograph on historical explanation in Herodotus,3 I was struck even more forcefully than before by how many of the characteristic interpretative techniques—not merely what they do, but how they do it—are already there in the Iliad and Odyssey. As the similarity of title shows, this paper is a companion piece to that book, though a full treatment would itself have swollen to monograph proportions, and the points have relevance to many other historical writers as well as Herodotus.

It argues that this requirement was part of an unsuccessful attempt by Solon to prevent the establishment of Pisistratus’ tyranny in Athens in 561/60 BC. According to the Athenaiōn Politeia Solon enacted a law on stasis that penalised neutrality in civil strife. The main argument of the dissertation is that friendship, philia, and rivalry, eris, are interconnected and that the failure to recognize this interconnection leads to violence and destruction. More specifically, I argue that every philia, friendship, contains elements of eris, of difference and disagreement, and that the failure to provide a space for these elements within the philia relationship results in the collapse of the friendship. Similarly, I argue that every eris, rivalry, contains elements of philia, of similarity and communality, and that the failure to recognize these elements leads to violent and destructive results. I use the term ‘philia’ here in a broad sense that includes different interpersonal relations like love, friendship, cooperation, solidarity, sympathy, etc., which are endowed with some gravity force that draws individuals close to each other and links them together.     Persuasive ethics: The direct discourse of women in Plutarch’s Roman Lives A Thesis Submitted in Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Amanda Macauley Classics Department University of Otago 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which the speech of women and their interaction with men contribute to the ethical framework of Plutarch’s Roman Lives. In particular, it explores the significant features shared by the various examples of female speech: every Roman woman who speaks is a member of the elite; all speak at a point of civic and personal crisis; and all are portrayed as virtuous exempla. The lone exception to this model is Cleopatra, whose direct discourse functions as a philosophical and cultural contrast to the virtues espoused by the Roman women, although ultimately, Plutarch provides the Egyptian queen with a measure of redemption at the close of the Life of Antony. A close reading of these texts therefore offers a complex view of how Plutarch regarded gender, culture and identity under the rule of the Roman Empire. Chapter One analyses the public intercessions of Hersilia in the Life of Romulus and Volumnia in the Life of Coriolanus. In these episodes, Plutarch incorporates Greek tragic models and Roman cultural ideals in order to present female action and direct discourse as a dramatic articulation of the importance of sophrosyne and paideia for both the statesman and state. Chapter Two explores the more intimate speeches delivered by Julia, Octavia and Cleopatra in the Life of Antony. The discourse of these women serves to illustrate the ethical tension between eros (passion) and logos (reason), and the conflict between the pursuit of public and private goods.

This paper starts from this premise, focusing on how elites have deployed metaphors of water and waste to form a rhetorical consensus around the displacement of non-elite citizens in ancient Roman contexts, with reference to similar discourses in the contemporary Global North and Brazil. The notion of ‘domestic displacement’—the forced movement of citizens within their own sovereign territory—elucidates how these metaphors were used by elite citizens, such as Cicero, to mark out non-elite citizens for removal from the city of Rome through colonisation programmes. In the elite discourse of the late Republican and early Augustan periods, physical proximity to and figurative equation with the refuse of the city repeatedly signals the low social and legal status of potential colonists, while a corresponding metaphor of ‘draining’ expresses the elite desire to displace these groups to colonial sites. The material outcome of these metaphors emerges in the non-elite demographic texture of Julius Caesar’s colonists, many of whom were drawn from the plebs urbana and freedmen. An elite rationale, detectable in the writings of Cicero, Livy, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and others, underpins the notion of Roman colonisation as a mechanism of displacement. On this view, the colony served to alleviate the founding city—Rome—of its surplus population, politically volatile elements, and socially marginalised citizens, and in so doing, populate the margins of its empire too.
