10th Edition Revised 2011 ©The American Daffodil Society, Inc. Published by The American Daffodil Society, Inc. P.O. Box 522 Hawkinsville, GA 31036-0522 U.S.A. Committee for the 10th edition Kirby Fong, Richard Ezell, Michael Berrigan, Kathy Andersen, Kathy Welsh, Mary Lou Gripshover, and Naomi Liggett, Chairman Cover Art by Marie Bozievich www.daffodilusa.org www.DaffSeek.org www.daffodilusastore.org INTRODUCTION The information in Daffodils to Show and Grow is taken from the Tom D. Throckmorton Daffodil Data Bank of the ADS and includes those daffodils likely to be seen in shows, in gardens, or in commerce. Many catalogs from around the world have been scoured to make sure those flowers in commerce are listed here. It should be noted that when alphabetizing, the program makes note of spaces in a cultivar name, so that ‘Gold Velvet’ comes ahead of ‘Goldcourt’ and that ‘Moon Valley’ comes ahead of ‘Moonbird’. Occasionally the name of a cultivar is followed by one or more pound signs (#). These serve to signal an unusual feature or circumstance which exists in our knowledge of the cultivar. Most commonly the # draws attention to the fact that more than one cultivar bears the name. The flower name is followed by the classification. Immediately after the classification is a column headed with a “V/I/M/H.” When a V appears in this column, it indicates that the flower is variable, either in color or form. An intermediate-sized flower is indicated by an I; PI indicates a flower which may be an intermediate, as no measurements were given at registration. M indicates an ADS-approved miniature, and H indicates a historic flower. Breeder is the raiser, not the registrant. Season of bloom is based on a scale of 1 to 7. Season 1 is extra early, Season 6 is extra late; and Season 7 indicates an unusual period of bloom, such as autumn or winter blooming cultivars. Height indicates the relative height of the plant, based on a scale of 1 to 4. Height 1 indicates an ADS approved miniature. Year is the date of registration. If registration is long delayed, the date is followed by a < sign. If the cultivar is unregistered, the date of Introduction or exhibition is given, followed by an *. REMEMBER, SOME TROPHIES REQUIRE THAT THE FLOWER BE REGISTERED. Ctry gives the country of origin. Daffodils Distinguished Solely by Botanical Name, now in Division 13, are taken from the RHS Daffodil Register and Classified List 2008, as updated, and are listed in the back of the book. A listing of those cultivars currently on the ADS Approved List of Miniature Cultivars is also at the back of the book. The Tom D. Throckmorton Daffodil Data Bank of the ADS contains most pertinent information about known daffodil cultivars. Parentage, chromosome count, and fertility data are given in addition to information found here. The Data Bank is updated annually, and a printout may be purchased from the Society’s office at P.O. Box 522, Hawkinsville, GA 30036-0522. Those with access to computers will find the above information, along with many photos, at www.DaffSeek.org.
