Appearing in social movements, political campaigns, and everyday discourse, Internet memes are believed to be a tool for people to communicate their personal-political opinions, values, and experiences in a digital public sphere. A study was undertaken to learn more about Internet meme users, by exploring the uses for Internet memes and the effects of Internet meme use in political settings. Drawing on concepts and empirical findings from the fields of memetics, communication science, and political participation research, this project approached Internet memes from a media-psychological perspective. Across three studies, this dissertation presents an exploration of the political relevance of Internet meme use. The first study dealt with the central motives for using Internet memes, and the role that users attribute to political Internet memes. In a Delphi-method interview study with meme experts (n=9) and regular meme users (n=16), participants discussed why they turned to Internet memes. A qualitative content analysis revealed that political meme use is driven by an interplay of self-expression, social identity, and entertainment motives. Participants also concluded that the use of political Internet memes can supplement, but not replace, other political activities. To focus on the political attitudes and behaviors of meme users, the second study used an online survey (N=333) to assess the antecedents and consequences of political Internet meme use. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that the use of political Internet memes can be significantly predicted by political interest and by political meme efficacy, or the belief that memes are an efficacious political activity. Further, meme use significantly predicted higher engagement in conventional and unconventional political activities, even when controlling for POLITICAL INTERNET MEMES "4 political interest. The third study was therefore aimed at uncovering mechanisms of possible mobilizing effects of political Internet meme use. In a controlled laboratory setting, participants (N=104) were randomly assigned into one of three conditions (meme consumption, private meme production, public meme production). Subsequent prosocial behavior tendencies (donating to a charity and signing up for a newsletter) were not found to differ across the conditions, although marginally significant interaction effects related to cost were found, along with a result related to a measure of selfish tendencies. In particular, I examine the culture of the South Korean Internet freak community of DCinside.com and the phenomenon I have dubbed “loser aesthetics.” Throughout the dissertation, I elaborate on the meaning-making process of self-reflexive mockery including the labels “Internet freak” and “surplus (human)” and gender politics based on sexuality focusing on gender ambiguous characters, called Nunhwa, as a means of collective identity-making, and I explore the exploitation of unpaid immaterial labor through a collective project making a review book of a TV drama Painter of the Wind. The youth of South Korea emerge as the backbone of these creative endeavors as they try to find their place in a precarious labor market that has changed so rapidly since the 1990s that only the very best succeed, leaving a large group of disenfranchised and disillusioned youth. I go on to explore the impact of late industrialization and the Asian financial crisis, and the nationalistic desire not be left behind in the age of informatization, but to be ahead of the curve.

Siyasal Hesap Verebilirlik, İletişim ve Demokrasi: Medyalaştırılmış bir Kurgu mu? * Ekmel GEÇER 1 Abstract This study, mostly through a critical review, aims to give the description of the accountability in political communication, how it works and how it helps the addressees of the political campaigns to understand and control the politicians. While doing this it will also examine if accountability can help to structure a democratic public participation and control. Benefitting from mostly theoretical and critical debates regarding political public relations and political communication, this article aims (a) to give insights of the ways political elites use to communicate with the voters (b) how they deal with accountability, (c) to learn their methods of propaganda, (d) and how they structure their personal images. The theoretical background at the end suggests that the politicians, particularly in the Turkish context, may sometimes apply artificial (unnatural) communication methods, exaggeration and desire sensational narrative in the media to keep the charisma of the leader and that the accountability and democratic perspective is something to be ignored if the support is increasing. I use framing theory as a primary variable to understand the messages “Stunning and Brave” attempts to convey. Framing theory originated from the theory of agenda setting. Agenda setting explains how media depictions affect how people think about the world. Framing is an aspect of agenda setting that details the organization and structure of a narrative or story. Framing is such an important variable to agenda setting that research on framing has become its own field of study. Existing literature of framing theory, comedy, and television has shown how audiences perceive issues once they have been exposed to media messages. The purpose of this research will review relevant literature explored in this area to examine satirical criticism on the social issue of political correctness. It seems almost unnecessary to point out the effect media has on us every day. Media is a broad term for the collective entities and structures through which messages are created and transmitted to an audience. As noted by Semmel (1983), “Almost everyone agrees that the mass media shape the world around us” (p. 718). The media tells us what life is or what we need for a better life. We have been bombarded with messages about what is better.

Internet meme is an extension of meme, with the defining characteristic being its spread via Internet. While online communities of all cultures generate their own memes, owing to the colossal amount of content in English and the long & widespread adoption of Internet across all strata of society in English-speaking countries, the vast majority of high-impact and well-documented memes have their origin in English-speaking communities. In addition to their spread in the original culture sphere, some of these prominent memes have also crossed the cultural boundaries and entered the parlance of Chinese Internet communities. This paper seeks to give a brief introduction to Internet memes in general, and explore the factors that control and/or facilitate a meme’s ability to enter Chinese communities. Whitney Phillips (2015) notes that it’s politically significant to pay attention to issues of online harassment because this kind of invective calls “attention to dominant cultural mores” (p. 7). Keeping our finger on the pulse of such attitudes is imperative to understand who is excluded from digital publics and how these exclusions perpetuate racism and sexism to “preserve the internet as a space free of politics and thus free of challenge to white masculine heterosexual hegemony” (Higgin, 2013, n.p.). While rhetoric and writing as a field has a long history of examining myriad exclusionary practices that occur in public discourses, we still have much work to do in understanding how online harassment, particularly that which is gendered, manifests in digital publics and to what rhetorical effect.

    Cyberculture: Anthropological perspectives of the Internet Elisenda Ardevol Universitat Oberta de Catalunya Using anthropological theory to understand media forms and practices workshop Loughborough, 9th December, 2005 Internet as a communicational technology has opened a wide interdisciplinary field of research related with social and cultural change, a main topic in anthropological theory. My aim here is to discuss the anthropological perspectives of culture implicit in different approaches to the analysis of Internet, specially those that refers to “cyberculture”, because this term contains a key concept of anthropological theory, and also because I think it could be a good example for examining the use of anthropological theory for understanding media forms and practices, in this case, the Internet. Cyber-culture? What do we mean by “cyberculture”? When I decided to study Internet from an anthropological view, in the 90ties, the term “cyberculture” was on the arena. On one hand, people were using, and still use, the prefix “cyber” to refer to activities and social movements carried out through Internet, such as “cyberactivism”, “cybercafe”, “cyberart”, etc. It seems that the word “cyberculture” pretends to be a new concept to put together all these activities. On the other hand, “cyberculture” was used by some scholars as a concept for understanding Internet impact on society, such as the proposal of Pierre Lévy. Finally, “cyberculture” referred to a new interdisciplinary field of research, defined by the cultural analysis of communication and information technologies. My question then, was how to understand the multiplicity of studies that take a cultural perspective in their approach. What I want to present now is a kind of mental map that I made up.

My primary interest, for both personal and academic inquiries, is the investigation of various cultural and sub-cultural groups and their experiences. The rituals and performance customs of particular modern and indigenous communities offers an intriguing glimpse into worlds I have yet to travel. I will briefly discuss my previous adventures with international travel, religious and spiritual quests, and my examination of a multitude of artistic and cultural genres like theatre and dance. Both my previous cultural experiences and the performance elements of cross- cultural studies directly influenced my choreography while in the School of Dance at Ohio University.
