Faisal S. Abdulaziz Al Saud, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Rome, Malta and San Marino Dear readers, As I am writing this editorial, Saudi Arabia is celebrating the 5th anniversary of the launch of Saudi Vision 2030. These five years have marked a sea change for the country, and charted a solid path towards a sustainable and inclusive future. In fact, the government recently announced that Kingdom is preparing to achieve the Vision’s goals before 2030. The Vision’s reforms aim at raising the population’s quality of life and at modernizing the Kingdom in harmony with its cultural and environmental heritage and, so far, have led to rapid development in every sector. Safeguarding the environmental heritage has a central role in the ongoing socio- economic transformation program. At the recent Climate Summit, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman, reminded that the concept of sustainable development is embedded in Saudi Vision 2030 and that the Kingdom has launched in accelerated steps packages of strategies and regulations, such as the National Environmental Strategy, with the aim of producing 50 percent of the Kingdom's energy need by 2030, using clean renewable sources. As part of this strategy, His Highness the Crown Prince recently announced two initiatives: Saudi Green Initiative and Middle East Green. Among the objectives, the initiatives aim to implement the largest reforestation plan in the world and reduce regional emissions by 60 percent, thus contributing to a reduction of more than 10 percent in global emissions. The Saudi government is already working with the partner Countries to achieve the Initiative’s goals and it is preparing to host the first Summit of the Middle East Green initiative within the next year. Safeguarding the environment and the fight against climate change require that national efforts towards sustainability are framed in an effective and inclusive multilateral context. Last year, during the Saudi presidency of the G20, the Kingdom supported the need to adopt the notion of the circular carbon economy, launching two international initiatives to curb land degradation and protect coral reefs. March / April 2021 - Issue 2 SAUDI ARABIA IN FOCUS - 08 Saudi Arabia is committed to these issues, both in the context of the G20 in support of the agenda of the current Presidency, which in 2021 passed from Saudi Arabia to Italy, and in the broader international context in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement. In this framework, Saudi Arabia, together with the United States, Canada, Norway and Qatar, recently took part in the Net-Zero Producer Forum, a platform for oil and gas producers that aims to develop pragmatic strategies towards zero net emissions. As a leading oil producer, the Kingdom recognizes its responsibility in its efforts to protect the planet. As in the era of oil and gas, the Kingdom supported the energy market, today it aims to become a global leader in building a " green" world. I would like to conclude by recalling that the protection of the environment is in full harmony with the Islamic vision of the world and the role that Islam gives to man as guardian (khalifa) of nature. On these days, millions of Muslims around the world celebrate the holy month of Ramadan. Although fasting is the best-known aspect of Ramadan, this month offers also an opportunity to reflect and be more aware of the universal and inter-religious principles of mercy, compassion and of the respect for the Earth, as a universal common good of humanity. I hope these days will offer to all of us, Muslims and non-Muslims, a time to reflect on environmental awareness and on our individual role as khalifa of nature. My best wishes for the upcoming festivity of Eid al-Fitr to all those celebrating. Rome, 25 April 2021 Faisal S. Abdulaziz Al Saud Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Italy, Malta and San Marino March / April 2021 - Issue 2 SAUDI ARABIA IN FOCUS - 09 in evidence in evidence Ramadan 2021: Speech of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques In the name of God, the Clement the Merciful, Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds, it is written in the Holy Quran: “Oh you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those who preceded you. Perhaps you will become fearful". Peace and Blessing on the Prophet on his people and on his companions. Citizens and residents of our beloved country, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, may God protect it, Muslim brothers everywhere, Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessing, Best wishes, I give thanks to God, the Almighty Almighty, who has given us this Holy month, month of the Koran, of mercy, of salvation from hell, to the Exalted, Majestic, I ask may the coming of this Holy month be benevolent for Islam, for Muslims and for the whole world. Furthermore, I ask Him, the Blessed, the Sublime, may he make us among those who fast for faith and eternal reward. March /April 2021 - Issue 2 SAUDI ARABIA IN FOCUS - 11 in evidence My children and my daughters, my dear brothers and sisters, Muslims everywhere, The month of Ramadan comes this year while the whole world is still going through a critical period and a difficult phase due to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the numerous precautions and measures put in place by the international community to stop this pandemic and limit the health, social and economic repercussions.
