It would certainly be difficult to count the number of monographs studying the Boethian nature of Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry. Readers and literary critics from the past centuries have long recognised that connexion and studied how Chaucer went through The Consolation of Philosophy for his own understanding of Love’s binding principle, or for notions such as providence, fate, and free will. John M. Hill’s detailed analysis in Chaucer’s Neoplatonism: Varieties of Love, Friendship, and Community follows that critical tradition but accomplishes, however, a rare feat: indeed, for a study underlying the importance of old books in the production of new science, to paraphrase Chaucer, Hill brilliantly manages to absorb past criticism and to offer something new on the subject. -

BOOK REVIEWS 'CHRISTOPHER FELLING. Literary Texts and the Greek Historian. London and New York: Routledge, 2000. Pp. x +338. £65.00 cloth; £17.99 paper. Classical historians to judge by more recent publications are beginning to look like rabbits caught in headlights, with a choice between remaining frozen in a dangerous position or scattering to seek more promising if obscure pasture. Conference proceedings are filled with new insights and prospects for "exploration," and publishers enthuse over approaches which bear suspicious resemblance to escape hatches into communication studies. This book explains that it is one of a series providing "an introduction to the problems and methods involved in the study of ancient history." (D. Potter's Literary Texts and the Roman Historian has already appeared.) It "takes a series of extended test cases, and discusses how we should and should not try to exploit the texts." It "concentrates on Athens in the second half of the fifth century." It "suggests new ways in which literary criticism can illuminate the society from which these texts sprang." Pelling tries valiantly to do all these things, but in the end it still looks like the same old philological-historical-philosophical-tragical commentary we remember from our youth, and piquant globs of LitCrit parmesan are not going to disguise so easily the fare beneath. The book is indeed a series of extended discussions of specific classical texts. There would be other ways of tackling the issues posed by the title, and Pelling, a trained philologist, feels he is an outsider "for good or ill" (Preface) in taking some examples to discuss methodological issue about "historical truth," and he deals with oratory, history, tragedy, comedy, feminist readings, shining his lamp into the dark corners of lying rhetoric and masculine chauvinism. -

Such a description would seem to imply a partial separation from the political situation in which he wrote and would see his treatise in relation to the vast mass of the theological literature of the day. -

However, since the anti-crusade voice of Gower and Langland has been discussed by many other scholars, this study focuses on Chaucer’s poems and their implicit opposition of crusading. -

125 LAY LITERACY AND THE MEDIEVAL BIBLE Graham D. Caie, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom Among Arne Zettersten's impressive research publications are those on Middle English texts. His brilliant editions of The Anerene Riwle, published over the years in the Early English Text Society, have done so much to further our knowledge of this important religious work. Tracing the sources of the The Anerene Riwle author's quotations is indeed a complex task. Geoffrey Shepherd states that "the Bible provides most of the mate• rial of the Rule - the medieval Bible, a vast indivisible unity, but perceived only by glimpses. Often it is a gloss which leads him [the author] to the scriptural text, not to an initial memory of Scripture" (1959: xxv-xxvi).1 Shepherd goes on to show the complexities involved in finding the source of biblical paraphrases in The Anerene Riwle: It is often difficult to tell whether the author of the Rule is making a direct use of originals entire, or whether he is not using some collections of au• thorities (Sententiae), or current anthologies (Florilegia), which would be available in any library by the beginning of the thirteenth century. However, considering the Rule as a whole, we must recognise that the range of scrip• tural reference or contact with a variety of extra-scriptural writings is wide (1959: xxvii) This "medieval Bible" is very different from ours and even the Vulgate, Jerome's Latin translation from c. 404 which would, at the time, have been available only to the Latin literate; it is more a pan-European compen• dium of biblical, patristic and legendary material expressed in as different forms as Danish wall paintings and popular English vernacular poetry or drama. -

For seven hundred years the children of St. Dominic, at their Father's command and helped by his prayers, have sought to meet the needs and answer the call of each succeeding age. The present book seeks to show how they tried in the past to do their duty. Seven hundred years have passed since the first English Dominicans came to their native land to plant the Dominican tree. With many great successes and many great failures, with many great joys yet many deep and terrible trials and sorrows, their work through the centuries has gone on, and it is a great subject of rejoicing to see them to-day still at work in the land that gave them birth. To pursue the simile of the tree (for the tree that St. Dominic planted is still growing in Rome in the garden of St. Sabina) we can always expect and indeed look for many branches to wither and to die. Each year the tree puts off its leaves and each year fresh ones come up. Though the new leaves know little of the ones that went before, save to see them lying dead at the foot of the tree, it is the hidden sap unseen by both that gives life to each and clothes them all with glory year by year—how foolish if the leaves were to boast and to take the glory to themselves !
