Fergal, Tom and Staff are delighted to be associated L with Local G.A.A. - THE 85th S.H.C. FINAL

Today is the major day in S9.UI,h Tipperary's G.A.A. calendar. The day of the Divisional Senior Hurling Final has always been a special occasion in the tHliision. We celebrate today South Tipperary's 85th Final and it is appropriate that this 1996 decider brings together two learns seeped in the greal history and tradition of South Tipperary hurling. Killcnaule have a proud record in a marveliolL'; 111 year history whilst their rivals Ballingarry's outstanding contribution to the Tipperary G.A.A. scene c)uends over a similar period. chase their 161h title today whilst Ballingarry are seeking a 6th crown. Go n'Eiri go gheal leo. II is in many ways appropriate Ihal today's final will mark another milestone in the proud history of Gaelic games in our division as il will be the first to be staged in the splendid Moyle park the home of our Divisional and County Senior Football Champions Moyle Rovers, a club that has also rendered great service to the Association since it's foundation. This year's final marks the third year of Sponsorship by Allied Irish Banks PLC. of the Senior Hurling Championship and the South Board is delighted to avail of this opportunity .0 sincerely thank A.I.B. for their generous sponsorhip which together with the sponsorship by other bodies of various competitions enables the Board to expand it's pnlmOlion of Gaelic Games in the County's largest Division by lending it's financial support to such worthwhile activities as Summer Camps, School Projects, under.age activities and Ground development. The Intermediate Hurters of Fethard and Ballybacon-Grange, have their part to play in the day's activities also and we are confident that they will serve up a game worthy of the occasion. In compiling this special souvenir programme South Tipperary Board has endeavoured to capture the atmosphere and the nostalgia of the occasions. We hope that our efforts satisfy the reader. As programme editor I thank most sincerely those who have rendered such invaluable assistance eSPl-'<:ially the Board Officers, together with Dick Goldsboro (Ballingarry) Pat Shelley (Killenaule) and Seamus Norris (Moyle Rovers). Finally a sincere thank you to our many advertisers without whom publication would not be possible. Please support them. Beidh Bua is BeaMacht. Mice61 0 Meara.

o Lord I offer you this game. To you, I offer my playing Grant me, 0 Lord, a hurl er's skill. As a prayer, and Lord I With strength of arm and speed of limb, will put my heart into it too. Unerring eye for the nying ball, More important than And courage to match whale'er befall. the test of my limbs today May my slroke be steady and my ai m be true, will be my behaviour during My actions manly and my misses few; the game, hence 0 Lord, No mailer what way the game may go, help me to avoid vanity May I rest in friendship with every foe. if I do well, resentment When the fi na l whis tle for me has blown, at being beaten. and all And I stand at last before God's judgement throne, feelings of revenge, anger May the greal referee when He ca lls my name and jealousy. At the same Say, You hurled like a man; you played the game. ti me. 0 Lord I want to win Seamus Redmond so help me give of my very best, and may my best be good enough. Amen.

3 I passed through friendly Fethard Giantsgrave all gazed in wonder Where doth smile; And skies were brown And stopped at fair When they saw the thousands thronging By the River banks of Moyle. Through Caherclough and Orchardstown.

Game filled the woods of Lakefield The Carrick fl ags were flying The pheasant, woodcock, grouse; As they passed Ki lsheclan side I saw foxes, hares and horses Where the married Moyle and Anner Round Clonacody House. Meets the Suir's bright, sparkling tide.

I thought of our ancestors In that famed field near the River and those difficult days of yore; Tipp.IKilkenny boys did play; When the people oft assembled For the opening of our Sportsfield For the Mass at Donoughmore. on the 20th Day of May.

But the River Moyle keeps roving May the name of famed Lisronagh By Annsfort's lonely ridge And Powerstown e'er grow; Till it meets the gentle Almer May the Sky Blue flag of Moyle Rovers Not far from Thomy Bridge. Fly proudly o'er Monroe. Br. Joseph Perkins.

10 BALLINGARRY MEMORIES by Richard Butler, Tinnock

EXTR .... cr FROM· OALUNOARJN [00 YEARS 01' OAEUC GAMES.

My first introduction (0 G.A.A. games was a trip [0 Moyglass (about 1935) to see a game between G1engoole and Ballingarry. ('d say thOl I was morc [nlcrested in the car we were in than lhe malch. II was a big brown Hillman owned by Paddy Ahcame's father. Ihe [ate Mikey. I remember some of [he players and one of the SlaTS Ihal day was Mick Meagher ("The Doc). also P. Dalion, Luke DallOn. W. Kelly. Ballintaggart. Bowler Hanrahan. Danny Hanrahan Ind Billy Croke, Graglugh. On Ihe Glcngoole side were Ihe Duggans. Bill and Joe and P. Corcoran CIC. One of my earliest memories was also a match between Ihe same learns in Pal Fitzgerold's field in Glcngoole. One thing that stayed in my mind about thaI match was a spectator being hit by the ball. He was a brother of Tom (Boggan) Healy. He was kneeling beside one of the goalposts when ~ 11.01 the full force of a hurling ball into the nose and the blood flowed. My first match (about [936) was an inter school one in Mullinahone when Ballingarry played Drangan. [remember in thaI malch a hurley being thrown 01 me as [ wem 011 a solo run. The culpril was Bud Slephens who later played foolball with Clnncen. In 1938 I was fifleen years old and played comer· forward on the side that won Ihe Soulh Tipperary Minor Championship. In 1939 I was in goal far the Junior team. also Saulh winners. The C.C. 01 thaI lime was Fr. Quinn and he was responsible for the upsurge of hurling in the pari.~h at that lime. Tom Molloy was Chairman and P. Dalton. Secrel3ry. We trained in a carhouse in the village when Ihe evenings gOt shorl and my falber was our trainer. One of the exercises was ~chinups" on a bar between IWO walls and the training sessions were always packed 10 capacity. Team Spirit was wonderful. Usually a bus wos used for transport and indeed the cre:Jmery lorry was pressed into service during lhe War years. The Singing and fun coming home from those matches was something that 1 will never forgel. Mikey (Dash) Hanrahan was in charge of the magic bollie and took his job very seriously. The bottle often disappeared and there WIIS pandemonium in the camp until it was recovered. In 1940 I was laken \0 Clonmelto play Minor trial games in hurling and football and was a sub on the Tipperary Minor team beaten by Clare in . I played in the second half. Mick Cahill. Mullinahone was corner·forward Ihat day. Ballingarry entered a team in 1943 in the Callan Tournamem which was for junior teams and included Calilln. Tullaroan. Hugginstown. Drangan and Danesfon. This was a good Ballingarry team composed of the following: R. Molloy (Dick). Timmy Maher. John Carey. Jimmy Ilayden. Thomas Doheny. Jim Molloy. John Scally. Dick Maher. Nick O' Loughlin. Dick Carey. Jim Aylward. R. Butler. Micle. Tobin. Bill Pollard and Peler Croke. There was great jubilation afler our win over Danesfon in the final. They came in their hundreds on bicycles. ponies and {raps. This was during World War 11 and it was difficult 10 keep a team together. 1944. 1945 lind 1947 were good years for the club. In 1947 we won both hurling and fOOlbalt in Somh Tipperary and I was proud 10 be Captain of both teams. [played Junior Hurling with Tipperary in 1944. We were beaten by in Drumcollogher. Tommy Foran. Carticle. Davins played centrefield with me that day. We won lhe South Senior Hurling Championships in 1949 beating Killenaule in Carrick·On·Suir in a lough match. We were beaten by Knock3villa in the Coun ty semi·final. This was my last hurling match for seven years. Football look over then and in 1950 we were able to field a good team due mainly to the arrival in the parish of a few good players. Dan O' Connor. (a teacher). Dinny Roche ( a civic Guard). Tom Lyndl (tlteadler) and Mick Fallon (a Civic Guard). In 1951 Ballingarry won county honours in Senior football with the help of players from Mullinahane. Mick Quirke. Paddy O' Brien and his brother Jim and Billy Gahan. I will never forget Ihe enthusiasm. comradesillp and spirit which built up in this team. The Championship ran tate into the winter and we trained in McGrath's '·1011 in the village. Those lads from Mullinaoone cycled up 10 Balli ngarry on some hard nights. hail rain or snow. They then togged OUI in the hall. went across the Chapel Yard to Fennelly's Ilill where we ran and exercised in the light from II bulb on the corner of the Church. then back acro.~s Ihe Chapel Yard and more exercises in the hall. The training w a~ under the supervision of my father. . ab ly assisled by mally OIhers inclulling Billy Keogh. Dick Blake and Will ie Brennwl. One millch which stands out in my memory is a League Final in Clonmel in 1955 when we beat a FC1hard-Kilsheelan combination composed of some very fine foolbaUers. This match was won without the help of our Mullinahone friends and was all the more merilOrious fO( that. We had to bring some players OUI of retirement induding Jim Molloy. Ballinlaggan. and Dan O' Connor. N.T. I want to especially mention Tom Molloy from the village. who was Chairman of Ihe Club and the main driving force behind it for many years. As an example of his dedication I remember in 1939 Ballingarry won the Co. Junior fOOlbal1 honours. I was a sub on that team (aged 16 years) and when the medals were being presented I did not think myself wOtthy of one bul Torn came across the fields the mOfning after the presentation to give me my medal and 10 assure me that I earocd it. It must have been 19550( 1956 when Ballintaggan started a hurling club and [ played with Ihem for few years in some memoroble games. I finished playing with Dallingarry in 1963·1964 after 26 years. I also spell! a good number of years as treasurer of the Ballingarry Club and my later years as a referee of local games. tournaments etc. I was elected Chairman of the G.A.A. Club. about 1962 and re:!igned from thaI position in 1979. I was very proud to be a selector of Ihe Intermediate hurling team which won Co. honours m 1973 and would h3\'e won again in 1979 if given the right co-operation. It was during my time as Ch3irman of the club that Midlael 0' Donnell was secretary. In my opinion he was an outstanding official and was recognised as such :u South Board and County level. llis contribution 10 the club could not be measured and the success of under'lIge teams during his time was due mainly to his effons. lie was a hig loss to the club especially at boardroom level where he always tried hard for Ballingarry. I must also pay lri bu te to unOfher secretary. Dick Molloy. who gave sterling service to the club as a player and official. II BALLIN GARRY PEN PICTURES

24 HURLERS ON THE DITCH

EXTRACT ROM ARTICLE' COURSING COACHES' BY SEAN C1 DEA - TIPPERARY O.A-A. YEAR BOOK 1976. The dedicated club supporter is becoming something of a rara avis. He has never heard of coaching courses. He is not to be confused with the mere menlars and selectors whom he suspe<:ts of laziness, ineptitude and laissez-faire. He is easily recognised. a blUldle of hurleys lucked under OXler, the magic bottle protruding from one pocket and assorted medical supplies in Ihe other. He has a mission in life. He does not siand idly by - even in a doomsday situation. His stock-ill-trade consists of well-worn cliches. bUI to him they arc original words of wisdom specially tailored 10 the task in hand.

His is a roving mission. With a nice sense of liming he ranges [he fullienglh of the sideline, keeping abreast of the ebb and flow of play, and exhorting his men 10 deeds of valour above and beyond the mere call of duty. He makes due allowance for their ignorance of the basics by judicious advice to M get a man a piece", "watch the break" and that most profoWld of all admonitions "face the baW. If goals and points are coming freely he is happy his advice is being renected on the scoreboard for aUto see. Hope springs eternal. I once saw an enthusiastic Cashel supponer, Willie the Thistle, rush on to the field in the second half after his team had registered their first point, and ltiumphantly announce to friend and foc alike, "come on lads, ye have em now". On another occasion in a Killenaule/BaUingarry set-to with the former winning comfortably, a high ball sailed in over backs and forward<>. The Killenaule keeper made an optimistic swing al it. missed completely and the ball dropped harmlessly into the net. The magic bottle man appeared at his elbow as if out of Aladdin's lamp, took the stanted goal-keeper aside and admonished him sternly, "Jade, I don't mind you missing the odd point but you wouldn't want to let in any more of them M. ·STEADY THE NERVES"

Once in a Boherlahan-Killenaule confrontation in a South Tipperary final, the Killenaule goal-keeper, obsessed, perhaps, by the big occasion, had a swig too many from the potent cocktail boule "to steady his nerves". When his net fell for the second time, the bottleman rounded on him sternly: "Look here Tom, steady yourself up, sure a child would stop that one". Begor, then, he wouldn't Ned, nor Tom O' Meara with him. Sure 1 saw five balls corning together. I cleared four of them and now you're grumbling at the one that slipped in". PeriKlps the ultimate in self-justification was in a hard-hitting game between Coolmoyne and the Swans. The Coolmoyne full-back, not noted for standing on ceremony, was blown for a laiC tack.le on the Swan full forward. The referee, pointing an accusing finger at him awarded a close-in free, adding by way of warning: "Paddy, sure there was no ball there when you pulled". Says the ever-present bottleman, innocently, "Ah, sure ref .• twasn't so long gone".

But times have changed and rules have tightened. Sidelines arc fast disappearing. With them have gone the wits and the well-wishers who added a bit of spice to the occasion. Very soon, lik.e romantic Ireland, they will all be with 0' Leary in the grave.
