In welcoming everyone here this evening, players, referee, officials and supporters I hope we will have a very enjoyable and thrilling climax to OUT Mid Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship.

Bohcrlahan-Duallil and -Castleincy have come through the championship in flying style and arc deserving finil lists. The final should be a thrilling one, with Boherlahan-Dualla after a few great years, back in contention after last year's defeat, while Loughmore- is one of the great dual clubs in Tipperary and will have their eyes set tonight on regaining hurling glory.

I wish good luck to both sides later in the county championships ,md hope one of them will bring the Dan Breen Cup back to Mid Tipperary.

I wish to thank MacLochlainn Road Markings for their sponsorship and all our other sponsors too, the Semple Stadium Committee for their arrangements for the final, the players in all grades, the club officials, ref erees and their officials and all our loyal supporters and associated with Cumann Luthchleas Gael in Mid Tipperary.

Pag93 Mid Board Affairs 60 Years Ago

Sixty-one years ago sixteen clubs were affiliated to the Mid Tipperary G.A.A. Board as follows:- Thurles Sarsfield s, Thurles Kickhams, Moycarkey & Two-Mile-Borris, Boherlahan, Moyne-Templetuohy, Glengoolc & Gortnahoc, Dram & Inch, & Ballycahill, Holycross Rovers, Drombane & Upperchurch, Baile na dTeach, Templetuohy, Loughmorc, KiJlea, Clonmore and . Five teams contested the senior hurling championship, ninc the number 1 junior hurling championship, thirteen the number 2 junior hurling championship, eight the junior football champi onship. There were no minor hurling or football championships. •

Only twenty-four gate receipts were taken up, with the senior hurling final at Bohcrlahan between Moycarkey & Two-Mile-Borris and Thurles Kickhams topping the list - £125.1.11 at the drawn game and £126.2.9 at the replay. The smallest gate was for a match in Moyne - £1.1.0. Total gate receipts for the yenr amounted to £540.

Board expenses included £7 per set of medals, hurling balls and footballs £7.0.6, secretary's salary £30, printing, stationery and tickets £31.19.6, income tax on Inch field £11.9.6. Car hire for outside referees and gate check ers came to £11.9.6 while those visiting gentlemen got £4.9.3 for catering allowances. Car hire for the secretary and home referees totalled £13.13.6.

The average cost of a set of medals was fJ while the Board paid £4.16.0 for a bus to county convention which was obviously held outside the division. Affiliation of clubs to County Board realised £17.10.0. Grants allocated included £8 to Thurles Band, £4 to Moycarkey Band and refunds of £6.16.4 to Inch and £6.7.4 to Loughmore.

The above details give some insight into the financial affairs of the Board in 1937 and of prices pertaining at that time.

Best wishes to Bol1f'rJalwll-Dllalla p""" An Reiteoir Senior Hurli ng Final Jim O'Shea J.K. Brackens

Jim O'Shea will, this evening, referee his first Senior hurling final. One of the most experienced referees in the division, Jim first started refereeing in 1985 and has refereed at all grades, divisional and coun ty. He admits the highlight of his refereeing career was the famous County u/21 A Football final played at Littleton, Aherlow v. Eire 6g - a game that was seen worldwide on video with Aherlow's famous son F. Eddie giving the commentary. "F. Eddie called me evrything but a referee on that day, but we're very good friends since that famous game".

Jim, during his playing days, won honours at football with his club, Eire 6g, Templemore and divisional and county level.

Jim is hoping to see a good hard game of hurling of high quality and may the best team win.

Jim is former secretary of Referees at divisional level and would encourage morc young people to take up the whistle. He pays special tribute to his umpires and linesmen today - Ollie Adlum, Gar O'Shea, Billy Fennell, Jimmy Harkins, MI. Greene and P. J. Leahy - and to all other umpires and referees in the division for all their help over the years.

Outside of sport, Jim is a member of the F. C. A. formany years and has won honours at Munster and All-Ireland level on the shooting range.

Married to Tina, the couple have one daughter Aisling. We wish Jim, a Telecom official, every success tonight.

Page 7 Boherlahan-Dualla & Mid Tipperary ,

The Mid TIpperary G.A.A. Board was founded in 1907 but Boherlahan, as a club, did not come into existence until 1912. It's first chairman was Tommy O'Dwyer whose grandson Tommy is a valued member of the present Bohcrlahan side. Though Boherlahan contested the Mid final in 1912 they were defeated by the Thurlcs"Blues" but in the following year, 1913, they defeated The Jockey 5·4 to }·o for their first Mid title. The only direct con tact between that team of 85 years ago and the present squad is T. J. O'Dwyer whose grand-uncle Rody O'Dwyer was a member of the original Mid final winners. •

Boherlahan won successive Mid titles lip until 1919 except for 1915 when our club opted into the south division and took the county title as well as the south title that year. Boherlahan again opted for the south division dur· ing the decade 1924 to 1934 so their next mid success was 1941 when Philly O'Dwyer led a team powered by Mahers, Coffeys, O'Dwyers and Loobys to mid and county success. Surviving members of that team are John and Flor Coffey, Sonny Maher and Ned O'Dwyer. Twelve unsuccessful years were to follow but in 1953 we again took the mid title defeating a fancied Sa rsfield side at Templemore. Then came the really lean period and we waited hopefully but in vain for 42 years. Hope, how· ever, springs eternal and eventually Martin O'Dwyer, aided and abetted by Ciaran Maher, W. J. O'Q\..... yer and Aenghus Ryan put together a team of young hopefuls and in 1995 defeated current rivals Loughmore to take the Corn Sheain VI L.lochda home to Tubberadora for the first time though it had been presented by the Leahy family to the division forty years previ· ously. The trophy, however, has proved elusive to us as we lost in 1996 and 1997 to Sarsfields and Holycross respectively.

Donagh O'Donnell coaches the team with co-selctors Billy Maher and Seamus Leahy, son of the original club sec. in 1912 - "Tom of the Mill".

No doubt the friendly rivalry of recent rears between the contestants should be conducive to prodUCing a Mid d ina worthy of this great division.

This evening the club will be aiming to win the Mid senior hurling title for the seventh time since gaining senior status in 1981, following their county Intermediate success in 1980.

Winning a first title in 1983, Leahy Cup victories followed in '86, '87, '88, '92 and '94. While many still claim that this team has a lot of high mileage players, this is far from the truth with many young players introduced in the past few years. In fact the fu ll -back line to our victory over Thurlcs Sarsficlds was comprised of twenty, twenty-one and twen ty-two year olds.

From the team that took Mid and County honours in 1988 it is interest ing that Frankie McGrath, Eamonn Sweeney who captained the side, and Eamonn Brennan are today selectors with Jack Wa lsh who was again in charge in '88.

Club officers are: Chairman - Frankie McGrath Secretary - John Treacy Treasurer - Tom McGrath As:-;t. Sec. & P.R.O. - Pat Healy

On behalf of the club we would like to congratulate the sponsor, Donal Younge, on his recent purchase of Centenary Rooms, The Ragg. We thank him for his generosity to the club w hile in Loughmore and w ish .. Donal, Rose and Rosemary every success in the future.

The McGrath brothers - Tom, Pat and Michael - participated in all six Mid final victories. When Tom McGrath lined out in this yea r's Senior football championship it was his 25th year playing at this level.

Page It The Minor Game

Thurles Sa rsficlds take on holders Drom-Inch in loday's Supermac's Mid minor hurling final in what should be a fine game of hurling. The fact that the two sides met in the decider again last year adds spice to today's final. And the fact that it is being played in Semple Stadium is a fitting tribute to the young hurlers of both parishes.

Drom-Inch arc riding on the crest of a wave at the moment. They are impressing at senior level and their under-age structures are second to none. The have great men running the under-age coaching system and the rewards are seen each and every time they take to the field. Putting championships back to back is a difficult thing to do but, with quite a number of last year's squad young enough, they are well capable of doing so.

Sarsfields have gone three years without winning a Mid minor hurl ing title and that is something of a famine for them. They will want to enact sweet revenge on Drom-Inch for last year's defeat and they cer tilinly have the talent to do so. Their performances have been sluggish to date but Sarsfields have a lot of room for improvement and, no doubt, they wi ll improve. Many of these players have won titles with Durlas 6g and they certainly know w hat winning is all about.

Playing the minor final before the senior game is only ri ght and it is great to have the opportunity to do so. It hasn't always been possible in the past with players being involved in both senior and minor squads. However, playing the two together gives the minor game a real sense of occasion and it is a finc chance to sce the emerging tal cnt in the division. It also gives the young hurlers a taste of the big day and hopefully they will experience the senior final some day as well.

Liam will referee his first Minor A Final tonight. He started refereeing at juvenile level at fifteen under the guidance of former referee and now Club Treasurer John Maher. Jimmy Coppinger, Durlas 6g Club Secretary and the late Donie O'Gorman (R.I.P.) encouraged him.

Liam refereed all grades at division level and underage games at county level. He played all grades for his club, winning Minor B u21, A and Cahill Cup in hurling.

Married to Patricia, and living in his native Ardmayle, we wish the popular barman at Pat Fox's the best of luck in this final tonight.
