Nenagh, for leday's finals. In particular, I welcome Borrisoleigh and Lorrha our senior finalists, Erins Hope and Kiladangan who have qualified for the Nealon Trophy Final, our referees and their officials, invited guests and of course our supporters. Today is the most important day in the diary of North Tipperary G.A-A. Many of the games in this year's senior championship have been disappointing, but today we look forward to all that is best in this great game of hurling. The competing clubs have long and honoured histories, steeped in hurling traditions and they are sure to provide a feast of entertainment for us. These clubs have contributed much to our county teams and I look forward to the leadership they will give in Tipperary's climb back to the pinnacle of success for which we all hunger. I congratulate our minor and under 21 hurlers and their mentors on their successes this year and I compliment our senior team and selectors on the diligence with which they are preparing for the future. Night Neat Dreat - Over 21 DRESS TO IMPRESS LORRHA AND DORRHA CLUB Within a short time of the foundation of the GAf>.., in November 1884 hurling and football clubs were formed across the country. The 'Cashel Sentinel' lists thirty-fourclubs founded in CountyTipperaryduring 1885 and Lorrha is included in the list There is no record of the foundation meeting. Lorrha was one of twelve clubs represented in a trial game at Borrisokane on January 21, 1886, in a field kindly lent for the occasion by Mrs. Stephens, with the purpose of picking a learn to represent North Tipperary against South Galway for nothing less than the Championship 01 Ireland in Dublin on February 9th. Two lorrha men were chosen 'Messrs P. Meara, senr. and P. Meara junr. The 'Great Hurling Match' was won by Tipperary by a goal to nil. The victorious team was given a torchlight procession on their return to Nenagh and about four thousand people turned up in front of the Castle Hotel to listen to Frank Maloney, umpire of the team, address the multitude. At the end of the same month there is a report of a match t;>etween Rathcabbin and Abbeville hurling clubs at Abbeville. Despite inclement weather vast crowds assembled from the surrounding parishes to witness the game. 'The ground being measured and all other arrangements made the forty-two athletes formed into two lines about ten yards apart; they advanced and shook hands, then the ball was thrown up by the Aathcabbin umpire, and each person ran to occupy the position previously appointed to him.' Rathcabbin won the game by 1 goal and 14 overs to nil and they also won the return game at home on the following Sunday. On the occasion of the setting up of the North Board in 1901, Michael Cusack wrote: 'Glad to see Ormond become again a flowering spot on the breast of the Emerald Isle. Tipperary Is ever dear to me. Thurles is my capital for the G.AA In November '84 North and South Tipperary joined me in a'no-Surrender' of Gaelic Ideals. I want to seeyour grand old county flourish from Carrick tothe Sil .... erminesand from Lorrha away over Slie .... e Phelim. Lorrha won their first North Championships in 1905. Fourteen teams took part in the championship and Lorrha beat De Wets3-5 to 2-3 in the final, having accounted forToomevara, Youghalarra and Templederry along the way. The final was played atTerrygla~and the verdict was in doubt until the end. Lorrha's next .... ictory didn't come until 1914 when they beat Templederry at Ardcrony in the final on November22nd.ln the semi-final they overcame Borris Okane and the. (eporter on the 'Midland Tribune' had this to say about the match: 'Up and down the country we have witnessed many hard-fought G.AA contests but seldom have we been spectators at such a brilliant display of the caman as on last Sunday at Terryglass when in the semi-final of the North Tipperary championship Borrisokane met Lorrha The match was simply splendid and from the start to the finish it was play. and nothing but play'. Mlck Donoghue, Jack Lambe, Tom O'Meara, Pat O'Meara and John Carroll played in this championShip and were survivors from the I~05 team. In the North final of 1924 Lorrha had an easy victory 7-3 toO-3 over Nenagh. Fielding the same fifteen players, Sunday alter Sunday - all country tads, living within the confines of the pariah - they went forth on last Sunday to snatch the laurels for their dear old lorrha'. That team was: Paddy and Johhnny Gaynor, Mlck and Dinny O'Meara. Bill O'Meara. Tom Burke, Bobby Young, Jack Kennedy, Mlck Cronin, Paddy Hogan, Dan Q'Donoghue, Willie Carrol~ Nick Forde, Con Sherlock and Tom Dutty. The latter Is the last survivor and no less than three of the team, Mlck O'Meara, Jack Kennedy and Paddy Gaynor passed away this year. Success did nol come again until 1946 when the Club won the county Intermediate title. The final wasn't played until December 1947 when they beal Moycarkeyby4-4 to 3-4 at Galle. The club went senior and came through winners of the North final In 1948. This game will be remembered for the superb goalkeeplng of Tony Reddin, whose display on that day wilt go down In the annals of lorrha as the greatest of any man to wear the blue and white. Reddin's contribution was again major when the club won their next championship in 1956. That Spring he had played for t he seventh successive year for Munster but was dropped by Tipperary after a poor display In the league final. As If to prove how wrong the selectors were Tony came back to give vintage displays in the North Championship games especially against Toomevara and against Bonisoleigh in the final. lorrha Juveniles had a brilliant run of successes althls time, winning three North Championships In 1956 '57 & '56 and two county finals. This fine crop of young hurlers were motivated and trained by Fr. Cleary and Gussie Moran. The most glorious year for the lorrha club must, undoubtedly be 1966 when they captured four divisional tilles. By taking the junior and senior hurling titles they }ojned Roscrea and Toomevara as the only Clubs to win that double. When they won the under 21 , they became Iheflrsl club to achelve the treble and when they crowned It all by winning the Junior football final they became the first club ever to win four championships in one year. There were otheryears and other successes and the achievements of the club are by no ways meagre. However, It is held thallhe team during the sb:lies did not achieve as much as it might have. A senior county final victory has remained outside the club's experience and every time a North victory is near the minds of the supporters look towards the ultimate achievement Maybe this year It wilt become a reality.

It is about one particular spot ‘on the plains of Tipperary‘ that I wish to write, namely my home parish of Borrisokane?? . So I turn again to verse, which so often suggests things that mere prose cannot? In a book of poetry, ‘The Spirit of Tipperary‘ published many years ago by the Nenagh Guardian,we find a poem by Dermot F ?Gleeson who for many years was District Justice in Nenagh.He wrote under the pen-name ‘Mac Liag‘ . He writes as if from the top of Lisgorrif Hill looking down on the broad expanse of the two Ormonds with Lough Derg bordering them to the left? .The poem is simply called, ‘The place where I was born’ ‘O’er hill and mountain, vale and town, My gaze now wanders up and down, Anon my heart is filled with pride, Anon with memory’s gentler tide ‘ Of sorrow, until through them all The twilight whispers softly call From upland green and golden corn “It is the place where you were born”.

    Clonmel Advertiser. 20-4-1822 We regret having to mention a cruel and barbarous murder, attended with circumstances of great audacity, that has taken place on the borders of Tipperary and Kilkenny. A farmer of the name of Morris, at Killemry, near Nine-Mile-House, having become obnoxious to the public disturbers, received a threatening notice some short time back, he having lately come to reside there. On Wednesday night last a cow of his was driven into the bog, where she perished; on Thursday morning he sent two servants, a male and female, to the bog, the male servant to skin the cow and the female to assist him; but while the woman went for a pail of water, three ruffians came, and each of them discharged their arms at him, and lodged several balls and slugs in his body, and then went off. This occurred about midday. No one dared to interfere, either for the prevention of this crime, or to follow in pursuit of the murderers. The sufferer was quite a youth, and had committed no offence, even against the banditti, but that of doing his master’s business. Clonmel Advertiser 24-8-1835 Last Saturday, being the fair day at Carrick-on-Suir, and also a holiday in the Roman Catholic Church, an immense assemblage of the peasantry poured into the town at an early hour from all directions of the surrounding country. The show of cattle was was by no means inferior-but the only disposable commodity , for which a brisk demand appeared evidently conspicuous, was for Feehans brown stout.
