Jan-Eric declined, stating that he was busy with his construction series in "Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading" magazine. However, he graciously allowed the IBLS editorial staff to use the material he previously posted on his web site. This IBLS Wandering Locomotive Book is a product of Jan-Eric's first adventure into building a live steam locomotive. The material in this document is Copyright © 2001-2007 by J-E Nystrom, and is used with his permission. Juhani Saloranta, a friend of Jan-Eric and mentioned later in the text, passed away in July, 2012. His engines were described in "Live Steam & Outdoor Railroding", March to June issues 2010. Jan-Eric Nyström's Baldwin 3003 Page 4 Introduction This is the Baldwin No. 3003 live steam model I've built in my spare time, spending about 1,500 hours on it in 2000-2003 - some details which have been added later are still missing in this photo, shot on September 22, 2002, less than a month after I ran the engine on steam for the first time. The loco and tender are together almost two meters (6 1/2 ft) long. Add the four cars, and the whole train is close to 6 meters, or 20 ft. A video of Jan-Eric's Baldwin 3003 in August 2003, just one year after "first steam", can be seen here: http://ibls.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Jan-Eric_Nystr%C3%B6m Jan-Eric and #3003 at the Finnish Railway

Second Chances in The Wire: Perspectives from Psychology and the Judiciary The Hon. Rebecca R. Pallmeyer† & Dan P. McAdams†† ABSTRACT Playing off a scene in The Wire wherein prison inmates discuss whether Ameri- can lives have “second acts,” this essay considers psychological and legal issues at play in people’s efforts to turn their lives around, from bad to good. In the first half of the essay, a professor of psychology discusses empirical research into re- demptive life stories in which people find positive meaning in suffering and/or transform their lives from failure to relative success. While examples of redemp- tive life stories may be found in The Wire, making good on second chances seems to be a relatively rare occurrence. In the second half, a federal judge considers the issue of second chances in the American legal system, focusing on the issue of sen- tencing.

Not only that, it is the most important. One of the most memorable story arcs from The Wire’s five seasons is the rise and fall of Hamsterdam—a quasi-legalized drug zone in West Baltimore. Stories are powerful teaching tools because they marry information and context. By seeing how the application of law affects characters we know and care about, we become more attune to the potential effects of legal decisions in the real world. The story of Hamsterdam—which is essentially an attempt to transform a black market into a fringe market—presents just such an opportunity. When considering the various dimensions of the fringe economy, life in Hamsterdam imparts three critical insights: (1) Markets arise wherever there exists market demand.

  • Religion and Globalization
Religion and Globalization Edited by Ronald A. Simkins and Zachary B. Smith 1. Go Set Africa on Fire? Lessons in Evangelization and Globalization from Early Jesuit Missions in Ethiopia Jay Carney, Creighton University Abstract Despite their central importance for Ignatius of Loyola and the early generations of the Society of Jesus, sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Jesuit missions in Ethiopia are largely unknown in comparison to Jesuit encounters in China, Japan, India, Canada, and South America. This article offers a brief historical overview of these Jesuit Ethiopian missions between 1555 and 1640. The author also highlights six resonances between this early modern story of cross- cultural encounter and twenty-first-century mission and globalization. These include the imagination of a global Islamic menace; the dangers to Christian mission posed by political power and elitist paternalism; the need to envision catholicity as unity in diversity rather than unity in uniformity; the resurgence of religious and cultural traditionalism in the face of cosmopolitan globalization; and the importance to mission of long-term presence. Keywords: Jesuit, Ethiopia, Pedro Páez, globalization, mission 4 Religion and Globalization Introduction My interest in the history of the Jesuits in Ethiopia stems in part from personal factors. In 2013, I helped lead a group of 16 Creighton University undergraduate students to Tanzania. One of the Jesuit scholastics who assisted us was an Ethiopian native. He grew up within a tiny Catholic enclave in a sea of Orthodox Christians and Muslims, and he shared eloquently about the roots of his vocation and the positive influence of Jesuit priests and professors.

Time passed and the Duke was made well again by kindly strangers.

DISCUSSION DRAFT McMillian Washington and Lee Law Review DRUG MARKETS, FRINGE MARKETS, AND THE LESSONS OF HAMSTERDAM Lance McMillian* INTRODUCTION The Wire is the greatest television series of all-time.1 Not only that, it is the most important.2 The transcendental quality of the show lies in what it teaches those of us living in the United States about ourselves. Even when we as a society know what is the right thing to do, our decaying institutions lack the capacity to act. The ineffectual status quo continues unabated. This feeling of impotence is so jarring to the viewer because we immediately know it to be true: our institutions are broken.3 From this perspective, The Wire is not just a television show; it is an expose on the slow decline of America in the 21st century. One of the most memorable story arcs from The Wire’s five seasons is the rise and fall of Hamsterdam, detailed more fully in Part I of this Article.4 Bunny Colvin, a high-ranking police officer on the verge of retirement, suffers an existential crisis prompted by the ongoing futility of Baltimore’s drug war. His novel response is to create quasi-legalized drug zones, which are quickly dubbed “Hamsterdam” by the drug dealers who populate them. Colvin’s calculus is straightforward: by concentrating the * Associate Professor, Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. Would "Hamsterdam"Work? Drug Depenalization in The Wire and in Real Life John Bronsteent ABSTRACT The television show The Wire depicts a plan called "Hamsterdam"in which police let people sell drugs in isolatedplaces, and only those places, without fear of arrest. Based on limited but decent empirical evidence, we can make educated guesses about what would happen if that were tried in real life. Indeed, Swiss police tried something remarkably similarin the 1980s. More generally, the results of various forms of drug legalization, depenalization, and decriminalization in Europe- such as in Portugal, which has transferredthe state's method of dealing with drug use (includingheroin and cocaine) from the criminaljustice system to a civil ad- ministrative system since 2001-shed light on the likely strengths and weaknesses of Hamsterdam-like efforts. The Wire seems to get a lot right, including some of Hamsterdam's successes and Hamsterdam'spolitical unsustainability.

  • Danbury Departures
Danbury Departures Volume No. 26 March 2003 B&M 1455 at Edaville By Bob Boothe Project Coordinator In the process of researching the history of the Boston & Maine 1455 I’ve come across some interesting early photos and postcards which raise questions about what happened to the engine while at Edaville. Our research at the DRM shows that the locomotive which was initially number “100” when built in 1907 was renumbered in 1911 to “1455” and remained with that number while in service with the Boston & Maine. The caption on this postcard with the photo by Hugh Poisson said “The famous 1455 steam train: original road number 100 Built 1907 Donated to Edaville by Patrick McGinnis President of the Boston and Maine”. Note among other things that the headlight is on top of the smoke box which itself along with the smokestack has been painted “graphite/aluminum gray”. One wonders if these “retro-numbering” changes were done before or after arriving at Edaville. Note also the tender has “Boston & Maine” on a single line “Boston & Maine” with no “herald box”. Now here’s a different photo taken by Dick Leonhardt in 1978. The engine has been “updated” to again be “1455” with the headlight back in the center of front access door with the number board on the top of the now black smoke box. The tender now has “Boston & Maine” in a herald box. Any information museum members, friends or others might have to share with us about these or other events in the life of 1455 would be most welcome.
