Throughout theUnited States these people, who harvestand process seasonalfarm crops, are re- ferred to as migrant laborers. The education of thechildren of migrants is amajor problem in this country. During the pastdecade, efforts to improvethe education of migrants have produced some guidelines for curriculumplanning. LEARNING ONTHE MOVE is the result of four weeksof intensive workshopplanning and investi- gation into migranteducation by a group ofteachers, principals, and agency workers from Colorado, NewMexico, Arizona, Oregon,Texas, and Cali- fornia.In this workshop onMigrant Education held atAdams State College, Alamosa, Colorado, theseleaders met with the express purposesof developing the philosophiesbest suited to educationof the children of migra- tory workers, and oftransforming these philosophiesinto suitable examples of curriculum materials. This study is by no meanscomplete, but ±3 yet another stepin our continual search to improveeducation for migrantchildren. LEARNING ON THE MOVE has beenspecifically tailored to theSouthwest and its problems. The workshop membersbelieve that many of theirideas can be adapted for use throughoutthe major migratory streamsof the United States.They urge each area, state, and eachlocal school to study, planand modify as their situation demands for the improvementof the education of thechildren of migratory workers.
