Welcome to the AdelaideDJ.Com guide to mixed drinks. Today we are going to have ourselves a crash course in everything you need to know to appear knowledgeable about mixed drinks. That’s right, you’ll never have to say “I don’t know, what is that? Or you pick…” ever again. 1. Glasses

The following are the very basic types of glasses you will need to supply or ask for by name next time the situation arises. Glasses don’t have to be expensive. You can often find good drinking glasses at Ikea or other major chain stores. You don’t have to spend a tonne of money but you shouldn’t force your guests to imbibe out of a plastic cup you got at the football park either.

Cocktail glasses

The glass is also commonly called the glass. Designs range from thin and delicate to colourful and crazy and the correct will do wonders for the presentation of your drink.  Typically holds 6 ounces.  Use a regular or straight stem glass for martinis and classic drinks.  Z-stems or other fancy designs go well with colourful drinks!

Coupe

This glass is an evolved version of the glass. Perfect for .

 Holds 8-10 ounces.  Rumoured to be fashioned from the breast

of Marie Antoinette. “Ah, sweet decadence!”  Perfect rim for salt, nudge.

Old fashioned glass (lowball)

Common for serving anything “on the rocks” or an “old fashioned” drink.

 Holds 8-12 ounces.

Highball glass

The glass is very common for serving mixed drinks. Tall and thin, they generally provide the right size for a combination of ice, spirit and mix.  Holds 8 to 12 ounces.  Great for , rickeys, coolers, spritzers or any simple mixed drinks.

Hurricane glass

A large, wide glass, generally short-stemmed, with a distinctive reverse curve near the top where the rim broadens out.

 Typically holds 12-20 ounces.

 Best glass for tropical drinks, frozen or unfrozen.

Beer mug

Thick glass with a handle designed to keep cool.

 Great size for “drop-shot” drinks (see ).

Collins glass

Similar to a highball, only it holds more. Perfect for those strong drinks like a Long island ice tea.

Shot glass

Shot glasses (also called glasses) are used for shooter style drinks.

 A “shot” is technically defined as 1.5 ounces.  Small shot glasses or “pony” shots are common and hold 1 ounce.  Many shot glasses can be larger, holding 2 or even 3 ounces. Elaborate shooters may often require a large .

… Well, not really. But if it gets you to watch a Woody Allen film, I have done my job. Oh, wait. I am supposed to teach you about . Scratch the Allen film and listen up.

The following is a list of popular drinks and their ingredients. I suggest picking a few drinks you would like to be able to offer others and keeping those ingredients at your house. Stocking a full can be expensive but some top shelf , Rum, , Cola, OJ, Cranberry and Pineapple is a bit more manageable.

Martini (dry)

 Cocktail glass.  1 2/3 oz.  , dry, 1/3 oz.  Olive, 1 whole.

Stir 5 parts gin and 1 part vermouth with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a cocktail glass, add the olive and serve. The 5:1 ratio is a guideline for a dry martini, personal preference varies.

Sex on the beach

.  , peach, 1 1/2 oz.  Vodka 1 1/2 oz.  Cranberry juice, 2 oz.  Orange juice, 2 oz.  Pineapple juice, 2 oz.

Combine ingredients in a with ice. Shake and strain into a highball glass filled with ice.

Irish car bomb

 Beer mug.  (Bailey’s), 1/2 oz.  , 1/2 pint (Guinness Stout).  Whiskey, Irish (Jameson), 1/2 oz.

First pour chilled 1/2 pint of Guinness into beer mug, let it settle, then take a shot filled with 1/2 oz. of on the bottom, topped with a 1/2 oz. of Irish cream on top. Finally drop shot in mug and chug.

Long island ice tea

.  Gin, 1 part.  Rum, light, 1 part.  Tequila, white, 1 part.  , 1 part.  Vodka, 1 part.  Cola, fill with mix, 2 parts.  Lemon, 1 slice.

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes. Pour mix into a collins glass, making sure that there is a bit of at the top. Garnish with a lemon slice.

Blow job

 Shot glass.  Irish cream (Bailey’s), 3/4 oz.  Kahlua, 3/4 oz.  Whipped cream, top with.

This drink is strictly for the ladies! Combine Kahlua and Bailey’s in a shot glass and top with a puff of whipped cream. It must be shot without using your hands!

Kamikaze

 Cocktail glass.  Triple sec, 1 oz.  Vodka, 1 oz.  juice, 1 oz.  Lime, 1 wedge.

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Jager bomb

 Collins glass.  Jagermeister, 1 shot.  Red bull, 1/2 can.

Cosmopolitan

 Cocktail glass.  Lime cordial, 1/2 oz. Rose’s.  Triple sec, 1/2 oz.  Vodka, 2 oz.  Cranberry juice, 1/2 oz.  Lime, 1 wedge.

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lime wedge.

Mojito

 Highball glass.  Rum, light, 2 oz.  / club soda, 1 splash.  Ginger , 1 splash.  Lime, 2 wedges.  Mint, 2 leaves.  Sugar , 2 oz.

Muddle lime wedges, mint and sugar syrup together. Add this to a shaker with the rum. Shake and strain into glass. Top with soda and ginger ale.

Redheaded slut

 Shot glass.  Jagermeister, 1 oz.  Schnapps, peach, 1 oz.  Cranberry juice, 3 oz.

Fill a quarter of the way with ice. Add ingredients and ask someone with a nice bod to shake ;) Pour into two large shot glasses.

Screwdriver

 Highball glass.  Vodka, 2 oz.  Orange juice, fill with.

Build over ice in a highball glass.

Zombie

 Collins glass.  Crème de almond, 1/2 oz.  Rum, light, 1 oz.  Rum, overproof / 151 proof, 1/2 oz.  Triple sec, 1/2 oz.  Orange juice, 1 1/2 oz.  Sour mix, 1 1/2 oz.  Cherries / maraschinos, 1 whole.

Shake everything except the 151 rum in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a Collins glass over ice and float the 151 on top. Garnish with a cherry.

Buttery nipple

 Shot glass.  Irish cream (Bailey’s), 1 part.  Schnapps, butterscotch, 1 part.

Layer Irish cream on top of the schnapps in a shot glass.

Mimosa

 Collins glass.  Champagne, fill with.  Orange juice, 2 oz.

Pour orange juice into a Collins glass with ice. Add champagne.

White Russian

 Lowball glass.  Kahlua, 1 oz.  Vodka, 1 oz.  Cream, 1 oz.

Build over ice in an old-fashioned glass.

Jungle juice

 Punch bowl.  Gin, 8 oz.  Rum, light, 8 oz.  Vodka, 8 oz.  Fruit punch, 1 gal.  Pineapple juice, 8 oz.  Cherries / maraschinos, 20 sliced cherries.  Pineapple, 1 can.  Strawberries, 20 slices.  Ice, 20 cubes.  Oranges, 8 slices.  Peach, 15 wedges.

Add ice in bowl, add the fruit, pour in the fruit punch then add your gin, vodka and rum and stir well. Pour into glasses with ice.

Tequila sunrise

 Highball glass.  Tequila, white, 2 oz.  Grenadine, 3/4 oz.  Orange juice, 4 oz.

Stir orange juice and tequila with ice and strain into a highball glass. Add ice cubes. Pour into grenadine slowly and allow to settle. Stir before drinking.

Liquid cocaine

 Shot glass.  , 2 1/2 oz.  , 1/4 oz.  Southern comfort, 1/4 oz.  Vodka, 1/4 oz.  Pineapple juice, 1 splash.

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into an extremely large shot glass.

Pina colada

glass.  Rum, black, 6 oz.  Cream of coconut, 8 oz.  Pineapple juice, 8 oz.  Pineapple, 1 wedge.  Ice.

Blend ingredients in a bar , adding ice until a granular icy mixture is reached. Serve in a and garnish with a pineapple wedge. Pour into a hurricane glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge. And you get to sing that great song while you make it!

Fuzzy navel

 Highball glass.  Schnapps, peach, 1 1/2 oz.  Orange juice, fill with.  Oranges, 1 slice.

Add ingredients to a highball glass. Garnish with a slice of orange and serve.

Margarita

 Coupe glass.  Tequila, white, 1 1/2 oz.  Triple sec, 1/2 oz.  Lemon juice, 1 oz.  Salt.

Salt the rim of the coupe glass. Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into the salt-rimmed glass and serve. See also the Frozen for the slushy version of this drink.
