Today we are going to have ourselves a crash course in everything you need to know to appear knowledgeable about mixed drinks. That’s right, you’ll never have to say “I don’t know, what is that? Or you pick…” ever again. 1. Glasses The following are the very basic types of glasses you will need to supply or ask for by name next time the situation arises. Glasses don’t have to be expensive. You can often find good drinking glasses at Ikea or other major chain stores. You don’t have to spend a tonne of money but you shouldn’t force your guests to imbibe out of a plastic cup you got at the football park either. Cocktail glasses The cocktail glass is also commonly called the martini glass. Designs range from thin and delicate to colourful and crazy and the correct cocktail glass will do wonders for the presentation of your drink. Typically holds 6 ounces. Use a regular or straight stem glass for martinis and classic drinks. Z-stems or other fancy designs go well with colourful drinks! Perfect for margaritas. Holds 8-10 ounces. Rumoured to be fashioned from the breast of Marie Antoinette. “Ah, sweet decadence!” Perfect rim for salt, nudge. Old fashioned glass (lowball) Common for serving anything “on the rocks” or an “old fashioned” drink. Holds 8-12 ounces. Highball glass The highball glass is very common for serving mixed drinks. Tall and thin, they generally provide the right size for a combination of ice, spirit and mix. Holds 8 to 12 ounces. Great for highballs, rickeys, coolers, spritzers or any simple mixed drinks. Typically holds 12-20 ounces. Best glass for tropical drinks, frozen or unfrozen. Beer mug Thick glass with a handle designed to keep beer cool. Great size for “drop-shot” drinks (see Irish car bomb). Collins glass Similar to a highball, only it holds more. Perfect for those strong drinks like a Long island ice tea. Typically holds 12-16 ounces. Named after Tom Collins… Not to be confused with Phil Collins. Mixology 101 Guide To Mixed Drinks Copyright © 2009 Triple E Corporation Pty Ltd ABN 90 097 447 295 http://www.adelaidedj.com Page | 5 Shot glass Shot glasses (also called shooter glasses) are used for shooter style drinks. A “shot” is technically defined as 1.5 ounces. Small shot glasses or “pony” shots are common and hold 1 ounce. Many shot glasses can be larger, holding 2 or even 3 ounces. Elaborate shooters may often require a large shot glass. 2. Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Mixed Drinks… But Were Afraid To Ask… … Well, not really. But if it gets you to watch a Woody Allen film, I have done my job. Oh, wait. I am supposed to teach you about cocktails. Scratch the Allen film and listen up. The following is a list of popular drinks and their ingredients. I suggest picking a few drinks you would like to be able to offer others and keeping those ingredients at your house. Stocking a full bar can be expensive but some top shelf Vodka, Rum, Tequila, Cola, OJ, Cranberry and Pineapple Juice is a bit more manageable. Top 50 Cocktails 50 hand picked delicious cocktails to inspire, intrigue and tantalise your taste buds Our Top 50 Cocktails Over the past few years we’ve collated, tried, tested and been inspired by a host of amazing cocktails. From the classics to the new age crazy concoctions, we’ve enjoyed seeing what new directions bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts are taking. In this book we’ve collated our top 50 cocktails, that as a team we worked hard on to produce. We took into account the votes by all you amazing users on our site to try and maintain some sense of normality, while at the same time including some amazing inspired new creations. When we hit any heated discus- sions, there was only one thing for it - to taste test the cocktails to ensure we only chose the best. We hope you enjoy trying some of these as much as we did choosing and tasting them ourselves. Whatever you’re after, your favourite choice of tipple, or your mood we hopefully have included something to intrigue and inspire you. Nick Wilkins Make Me A Cocktail creator Equipment Cocktail Shaker You can’t get far with most cocktails without the staple of any personal home bar - the cocktail shaker. Add some ice to the ingredients within, shake for 10-15 seconds and strain into the required glass. Simple. Strainer Right after the cocktail shaker comes the strainer. Some shakers have a basic strainer built in, but to catch all those ice lumps or fruit pieces you don’t want in your finished product, a simple strainer suffices.
