Accuracy Checking Content Assets / Learning Objects A form of quality control conducted on content assets or learning objects that requires subject matter expertise, such as fact checking by a SME (subject matter expert).

Accuracy Checking Program Component A form of quality control conducted on a program component within its final delivery format that requires subject matter expertise. For example, a SME (subject matter expert) verifies that learning objects work within final delivery format.

C

Content Asset A chunk of information deemed valuable; the smallest element used to create learning objects. For example, a photo of a girl with a beaker and an assessment question are both considered content assets.

Copyediting A form of quality control that an editor performs to improve formatting, style, and accuracy of text. For example, an editor might check or tag the content for structure, check grammar and consistency, propose potential rewrites, check the links and other digital/online resources, and validate the content for custom library.

Course A systematized or prescribed series of primary instruction for learning based on a particular curriculum that can vary by school. A course must have at least one measurable learning outcome. It could be instructor-led or self-paced. For example, UT Austin Management 101, Texas A&M Management 101, Management 201, and Accounting 204 are all courses.

D

Delivery Format The form in which content is delivered to the end user. There are two types of delivery formats: learning style and technical format (display or raw/source). For example, content could be delivered via Pegasus, a PowerPoint, or an unbound book.

Delivery Method A classification of the delivery format as physical media, digital media, or performative/live broadcast.

Digital A term that refers to content that is prepared or recorded and hosted. For example, delivery platforms (Pegasus, eText, CourseSmart, MyLabs), content applications (new product models, mobile devices), podcasts (a recorded lecture via a webcast), learning management systems, and course management systems are all digital.

Discipline A branch of instruction or learning or an inter-related body of knowledge related to a field that might include additional courses or material that is not required for a major. For example, Economics, History, and Mathematics are disciplines.

Display The technical format of content, which includes file extensions and delivery platform formats. For example, Pegasus, eCollege, and print are displays.

E

Edition A specific collection of all of the program components within a program, including all versions and adaptations. An edition is a program. For example: 2nd Edition of Integrated Science Hewitt Program, 12th Edition of Robbins Program, and 11th Edition of Wade Program.

External Organization An organization outside of Pearson, which can be a standard body, regulatory board, or vendor company. For example, AACN, Blooms, Accounting Organization, and VPG (vendor) are external organizations.

F

Functional Quality Assurance A type of quality control performed on program components, such as a pre-flight or printer test.

I

Individual A human being who may or may not be affiliated with Pearson. An individual is a legal entity, can be assigned to a team, and can demonstrate knowledge of learning objects resulting in a learning outcome.

L

Learning Object The smallest measurable element of learning, digital or non-digital, that may be used for education or training. A learning object is a content asset aggregated with another content asset for a learning objective presented in a delivery format. As a business rule, a learning object must have at least one assessment content asset. For example, a slide presentation, video/audio lecture, MyLab question with associated answers and remediation, and Text H1: Building a Brand are learning objects.

Higher Ed (HE) Workflow Glossary 3 Pearson Integrated Workflow

Learning Objective A goal statement developed by Pearson that captures specifically what knowledge or skills should be learned. For example, explain the different research methods used by psychologists.

Learning Outcome Mastery of a learning objective that is measured and used for diagnostic capabilities.

Learning Style An approach or way of learning, particular to an individual, that is presumed to allow that individual to learn best.

Legal Entity A person, corporation, or organization that has legal status and can be contracted with.

M

Major A major is a course grouped with one or more other courses for a designation or requirement that has been developed by an external organization, such as an institution or an accrediting body. For example, Pre-med at Princeton is a major.

Market Feedback A type of quality control performed on a program component to verify if the market will use the program component or learning object. For example, a focus group session communicates to determine if a new Mastering product will be used.

Market Need A short description of need for the product.

P

Performative/Live Broadcast A delivery method that accommodates content that is given live or in-person. For example, delivering a lecture in-person, live chat, or a tutor service performed live.

Higher Ed (HE) Workflow Glossary 4 Pearson Integrated Workflow

Physical Types of delivery methods that can be physically touched for content that is prepared/recorded and manufactured/packaged, such as print and media.

Plan A formal outline for specified benefits and needs to achieve a goal.

Program A grouping of all of the content assets and/or learning objects organized around an individual (author), discipline, major or course. A program is agnostic of a deliv- ery format. A program is synonymous with an edition and release. Typically, a core product is an edition and everything else is a version of, derived from, or adapted from it. For example, 12th Edition of Robbins Program.

Program Component The product of an individual or team assembling a learning object or collection of learning objects or a content asset for a market need with a delivery format. A program component is contained in a program and can be shared across multiple programs. Psychology, Wade, Instructor Resource, CD-ROM Physical Media is an example of a program component.

Program Component Map A list sorted by the program component or the content assets. For example, MyLab has these specific assessment questions, PowerPoints, animation.

Program Component Plan An outline of activities specific to creating each program component.

Program Integrity A type of quality control on the entire program done prior to and performed by the program manager. For example, the program manager verifies design concepts and that content assets or learning objects are used throughout the program and align with the rest of the program (themes are used consistently).

Program Plan An outline of the program components for a given program. For example, the Robbins Program will have a School version, a MyLab, and a three-hole punched textbook.

Higher Ed (HE) Workflow Glossary 5 Pearson Integrated Workflow

Proofreading A type of quality control on learning objects or program component that verifies copyediting, design and/or content model have been correctly implemented. Proofreading is checking character for character after a transformation, which can vary in the levels of rigor. This can be done prior to final delivery format or after the creation of a learning object.

Q

Quality Control A review of all factors of learning objects or content assets or program components. It answers the following questions: Can you learn or educate from it? Is it under- standable? Is it marketable? Is it accurate? Does it work? Do all of the pieces work together? Business Rule: Any time there is a transformation of a content asset, learn- ing object or program component from one state into another, there will be a type of quality control associated with it. Market feedback, proofreading, copyediting, accuracy checking content assets or learning objects, accuracy checking program component program integrity, and functional quality assurance are all examples of quality control.

R

Raw/Source A technical format, such as jpeg, xml, or gif.

Release A program or a specific collection of all of the program components within a program. For example, Release 1.0.

S

Set of Standards Groupings of statements that describe the level of performance common to a student or professional by which the quality of that field can be judged (also known as a strand). For example, the Common Core Standards of Math.

Higher Ed (HE) Workflow Glossary 6 Pearson Integrated Workflow

Schedule of Authority (SOA) The list of approvers of a program proposal based on the financial nature of the program. The SOA is based on the source of the program component, and if more than one source shares the same SOA, a combined proposal will be generated for all of the components.

Standard A rule, principle, or measure established as a model or example by an external authority, custom, or general consent (also known as a sub-strand). For example, postsecondary students will solve calculus equations using technology.

T

Taxonomy A classification system for items based on their relationship to each other. The relationships can be associative, equivalent or hierarchical. This is a living structure that grows over time.

Taxonomy Structure (TAXA) The individual levels, nodes or segments (i.e. building blocks) within a specific taxonomy. For example, Nursing Course – Adult > Basics > Tubes and Skills > Infection Control Skills.

Team A group of individuals working together.
