  • This Was a Time of Both Turmoil and Prosperity for America
Lillie, Disney, 1 Cleansing the Past, Selling the Future: Disney’s Corporate Exhibits at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair Jonathan J. M. Lillie JOMC 242 History Paper 5/3/02 Park Doctoral Fellow The School of Journalism and Mass Communication The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Lillie, Disney, 2 Abstract This paper offers a historical analysis of Disney’s corporate exhibits at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, GE’s “Carousel of Progress” and Ford’s “Magic Skyway,” in an attempt to consider their historical and cultural significance. The coming together of Disney’s legacy of nostalgic entertainment achieved via his desire and skill in “improving” the past and future with the equally strong desire of corporate giants to sell themselves and their products is presented here as a case study of the processes of cultural creation: how and why specific discourses of technology and consumption are written in to these narratives of the past and the future. Introduction Between April 22, 1964 and October 17, 1965 fifty-one million people experienced the New York World’s Fair.1 The mid-1960s was a time of both turmoil and prosperity for America. President Kennedy had been assassinated only months before the Fair’s opening. In southern states such as Alabama the civil rights protest movement was drawing national attention. While cold war tensions remained high following the Cuban Missile Crisis, the nation was enjoying the height of postwar economic prosperity and geo-political power. The Fair’s twin themes of “Man’s Achievements in an Expanding Universe” and “A Millennium of Progress” captured the exuberance of the times, celebrating “the boundless potential of science and technology for human betterment.”2 The 1939 New York World’s Fair was in many ways a predecessor to the 1964-65 exhibition.

  • 'Freaky:' an Exploration of the Development of Dominant
From ‘Classical’ To ‘Freaky:’ an Exploration of the Development of Dominant, Organised, Male Bodybuilding Culture Dimitrios Liokaftos Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London Submitted for the Degree of PhD in Sociology February 2012 1 Declaration: The work presented in this thesis is my own. Dimitrios Liokaftos Signed, 2 Abstract Through a combination of historical and empirical research, the present thesis explores the development of dominant, organized bodybuilding culture across three periods: early (1880s-1930s), middle (1940s-1970s), and late (1980s-present). This periodization reflects the different paradigms in bodybuilding that the research identifies and examines at the level of body aesthetic, model of embodied practice, aesthetic of representation, formal spectacle, and prevalent meanings regarding the 'nature' of bodybuilding. Employing organized bodybuilding displays as the axis for the discussion, the project traces the gradual shift from an early bodybuilding model, represented in the ideal of the 'classical,' 'perfect' body, to a late-modern model celebrating the 'freaky,' 'monstrous' body. This development is shown to have entailed changes in notions of the 'good' body, moving from a 'restorative' model of 'all-around' development, health, and moderation whose horizon was a return to an unsurpassable standard of 'normality,' to a technologically-enhanced, performance- driven one where 'perfection' assumes the form of an open-ended project towards the 'impossible.' Central in this process is a shift in male identities, as the appearance of the body turns not only into a legitimate priority for bodybuilding practitioners but also into an instance of sport performance in bodybuilding competition. Equally central, and related to the above, is a shift from a model of amateur competition and non-instrumental practice to one of professional competition and extreme measures in search of the winning edge.

CHAPTER 11.19 ART Garth Evans But, Hands Have Eyes: Six decades of sculpture Until 26.01.20 ‘But, Hands Have Eyes’ is a solo exhibition featuring six decades of sculpture. Alongside works produced in the UK in the 1960s and 70s, Evans also presents a body of work for their UK premiere, that he has produced in the United States since his move there in 1981. The work of Garth Evans is integral to the history of British sculpture. Experimenting with the potential of scale, weight, medium and form, Evans’ work comprises both a formal and conceptual approach. He is always interested in interrogating established boundaries and, as a result, his sculptures are made from a diverse range of materials including ceramics, steel, leather and fibreglass. Evans states that many of his works, even when most abstract, are “triggers for, and containers of, particular identifiable memories”. Ultimately, Garth Evans’ works are ambiguous, multi-faceted and completely original. Talks at 4 16.11.19 FREE Are you interested in finding out a little bit more about our latest exhibition? Then why not join us for a free and informal guided tour! Our ‘Talks at 4’ are led by our wonderful gallery assistants and are a great way to delve a little deeper into our current exhibition by Garth Evans and his approach to his work. No two talks are the same so come along and be a part of the conversation. Art in the Bar Jon Pountney Waiting For The Light Until 14.02.20 ‘Waiting for the Light’ is a body of photographic works that capture a particular type of light; a harsh, acutely angled low sunlight that gives the scenes in Jon Pountney’s images a somewhat surreal and melancholy feel.

  • Sokol Flags—The Symbols of Croatian Sokol Movement to 1914
Sokol Flags – The Symbols of Croatian Sokol Movement to 1914: The Sokol Movement as a Component of National and European Integration at the Beginning of the 20th Century Jelena Borošak Marijanović Abstract In the European context, Sokol Movement events, and in particular Sokol “slets” (simultaneous group exercising accompanied by music), appear as important characteristics of the social life of Slavic people living on the territory of Habsburg Monarchy at the end of the 19th century and in the first decade of the 20th century. The movement promoted ideals of belonging to Slavia, as well as fostering a sense of belonging to particular nationalities (Croatian, Czech, Polish, Slovenian, etc.) that were specifically expressed during “slet” events. The author presents original (Croatian) Sokol Movement flags and documentary photographs and describes the particular atmosphere that reigned during “slets”. Postcard: The second Croatian Pan-Sokol “slet” in Zagreb 1911, representing a gymnast – “sokolaš”, the Croatian national tricolour, and a falcon. Proceedings of the 24th International Congress of Vexillology, Washington, D.C., USA 1–5 August 2011 © 2011 North American Vexillological Association (www.nava.org) 55 THE CROATIAN SOKOL MOVEMENT (SOKOLSTVO) The term sokolstvo refers to a physical training movement that emerged in 1862 in Europe, more precisely in almost all Slavic countries. This movement attained growing popularity as a form of recreation characterized by political undertones and national aspirations. The movement draws its name from the Slavic word for falcon – sokol – a bird that is, according to popular tradition, the embodiment of courage, boldness, agility, and desire for freedom. The champions of the movement were members of liberally oriented petty bourgeois who started to found special gymnastics associations or societies.
