Unfortunately, this has led to a great divide between quantitative and qualitative researchers, who often view themselves in competition with each other. Clearly, this polarization has promoted purists, i.e., researchers who restrict themselves exclusively to either quantitative or qualitative research methods. Mono-method research is the biggest threat to the advancement of the social sciences. As long as researchers stay polarized in research they cannot expect stakeholders who rely on their research findings to take their work seriously. The purpose of this paper is to explore how the debate between quantitative and qualitative is divisive, and thus counterproductive for advancing the social and behavioral science field. This paper advocates that all graduate students learn to use and appreciate both quantitative and qualitative research. In so doing, students will develop into what is termed "pragmatic researchers." IMPACT OF ACTION RESEARCH TEAMS ON ADMINISTRATORS’ IMPLEMENTATION AND TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION OF THE TEACHER KEYS EFFECTIVENESS SYSTEM by KEVIN PAUL CARPENTER (Under the Direction of Sheneka Williams) ABSTRACT This action research (AR) case study addresses the effectiveness of the feedback administrators provide to teachers under the Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES). AR teams explored techniques to improve feedback to help teachers improve their instructional practices within teacher and leader efficacy and professional school structures lenses. To evaluate the AR process, the following questions drove the study: 1. How effective is the action research process in empowering the team’s ability to find a solution to an evaluation system problem? 2. How can teachers influence the feedback process, and in what ways does feedback inform teachers’ practices? 3. How do administrators increase their capacity to give actionable feedback? Under the guidance of action research, two teams examined administrator feedback in the TKES platform and the professional learning resources leaders used to improve their evaluation practices. Findings included the following: teachers desire to see consistency in feedback that includes commendations and recommendations, administrators should change an evaluation score if the teacher provides evidence, teachers change their instruction if the feedback is purposeful, relevant, and convincing, and action research teams should include teachers from different grade levels and content areas to be effective as -

Almost every political plat Aform in the 2008 Morehouse College polit ical elections was based around "change." The question I asked myself is, "When will the need for change end?" It's difficult to comprehend how multiple candidates can preach how a new change is in order on an annual basis. Either their predecessors have not met adequate standards; these new political headliners have such inno vative ideas or its all politics as usual. Although extensive research has not been done, it is pretty certain that student elections have gone on for years. Many changes have been implemented through the election of student officials, but there is only so much change that can occur over a period of time. The problem with many of these "change" platforms is that they under mine the work of the antecedents. Barack Obama never debilitates the works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his campaign. So, why does a man have to cripple the accom plishments-or lack of-of the man holding the office before him by emphasizing how much "change" he will implement? I guess one must do whatever it takes to become a class officer these days. The interesting thing about these elec tions is how it allows for so many different words to say the same thing. -

The starting point is in comparison of two distinct currents within Arabic philosophy between the 10th and early 11th centuries, Peripatetic philosophy, represented by al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā, and Ismaili philosophy represented by al-Kirmānī and the Brethren of Purity. These two distinct groups of sources initially offer two contrasting views about philosophy. The attitude of the Peripatetic philosophers is rationalistic and secular in spirit, whereas for the Ismailis philosophy represents the esoteric truth behind revelation. Still, the two currents of thought converge in their view that the ultimate purpose of philosophy lies in its ability to lead man towards happiness. Moreover, they share a common concept of happiness as a contemplative ideal of human perfection, merged together with the Neoplatonic goal of the soul’s reascent to the spiritual world. Finally, for both happiness refers primarily to an otherworldly state thereby becoming a philosophical interpretation of the Quranic accounts of the afterlife. -

Teaching Philosophy 34:3, September 2011 241 The Transition from Studying Philosophy to Doing Philosophy JOHN RUDISILL The College of Wooster Abstract: In this paper I articulate a minimal conception of the idea of doing philosophy that informs a curriculum and pedagogy for producing students who are capable of engaging in philosophical activity and not just competent with a specific domain of knowledge. The paper then relates, by way of back- ground, the departmental assessment practices that have played a vital role in the development of my department’s current curriculum and in particular in the design of a junior-year seminar in philosophical research required of all majors. After a brief survey of the learning theory literature that has informed its design, I share the content of this junior-year seminar. In the paper’s conclusion I provide some initial data that indicates our approach to curriculum and pedagogy has had a positive impact on student achievement with respect to reaching the learning goals associated with “doing” as opposed to “merely studying” philosophy. 1. Introduction Capstone projects are common among liberal arts colleges and fre- quently carry an expectation that the final product demonstrates the student’s achievement of becoming a budding biologist, historian, sociologist, philosopher and so on. Even without a formal capstone requirement, I would hope that my philosophy students could—as they finish their undergraduate studies—demonstrate such an achievement. This is because the full set of benefits made available by an education in philosophy includes but extends well beyond knowledge of the history of philosophy and mastery of a philosophical lexicon. -

The following research critically analyzes drug discourse relating to the current opioid epidemic in Ontario and discusses why government responses to the epidemic have been delayed, and why they offer inferior measures to prevent growing mortality and morbidity. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the conceptualization of the imagination in contemporary psychoanalytic theory, focusing in particular on its connection with knowledge. I will propose that imaginative processes form the core of psychic ‘health’ by instantiating a state of mind in which the subject is genuinely open to ‘learning from experience’. At the centre of the investigation is a psychic process that I term the ‘reality oriented’ imagination: a form of conscious mental activity that facilitates an epistemological connection with both the internal and external worlds and renders the unobservable psychological experiences of others accessible. The concept of the ’reality oriented’ imagination significantly disrupts Freud’s portrayal of the imaginative processes as a form of wish-fulfilment in which the individual’s attention is drawn away from external reality and placed under the sway of the pleasure principle. Such differing presentations of the imagination across psychoanalytic models can arguably be understood by considering several major shifts in psychoanalytic theorizing since Freud’s time. I will propose that these changes can be characterised as an ‘epistemic turn’: a general movement in psychoanalysis towards framing the internal world as strategic rather than compensatory, and a corresponding understanding of psychopathological processes as a response to failures in understanding and prediction rather than instinctual conflict. -
