Message from the Editor:

The end of another year is approaching and I still do not have everything done that I want to do. I think genealogists in general are always in this predicament. We tend to always take on more than we can do. Sometimes The Longhunler becomes one of these difficult projects to complete. I am pleased with this issue because my name is not all over every submission in the issue. The membership and others friends have given me entries that should be of general interest to our members. We have a variety of submissions. Perhaps at least one will be of interest to you. My hope fo r the coming year is to improve the quality of The Longhunler by asking you, the membership, to become involved in writing and submittin g articles of interest. Remember that our goal is to promote genealogy in the counties of Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Simpson, and Warren. You know what interests you. Write that article and you may be encouraging or helping another member.

Don't forget to Pay your Dues. Fill out the form on page 191 of this issue. You save your Society money by paying your dues on time. Mailing of back issues is more expensive than our mass mailings of quarterly issues. ~~------~------

THE LONGHUNTER, VOLUME XXN, ISSUE 4, rage lSI Locating McFaddin's Station: Established in Warren County, Kentucky in 1785

R. Spencer Drake 807 Josephine Street Bowling Green, KY 42101

I have been asked to record infonnation I have concerning the location of McFaddin's Station, an early settlement in Warren County, Kentucky, around the year 1785.

The Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky had an original clipping loaned to them that was written by Victor Moulder. He apparently spent much time and research in preparation for his article on McFaddin's Station. Many names, dates, and places were mentioned in this well written publication. According to the Warren County, Kentucky census, Mr. Moulder was born about 1867. A family member visited the Moulder graveyard and told me the death date of Mr. Moulder was 1949. He stated that McFaddin's Station was located on Barren River on a farm owned by Emmett Logan and ruins of the old Station were visible at the time the article was written. He probably visited the ruins, as he knew the owner of the farm and its location. Mr. Logan sold the farm to Waller Phillips on 17 May 1917. (Lodged for record 9 June 1917.) Some records show the spelling Walter Phillips, however, Waller is correct.

A paper written by Wyonia Kimbrough (Mrs. R. E. Kimbrough), in 1956, while doing graduate work at Western Kentucky University for Dr. Gordon Wilson's class in Folklore , stated, "I visited the site of Warren County's first settlement. Most of the remains are gone but the old Buffalo Trail can still be seen as can the big spring which caused Mr. McFaddin to build the fort there in 1786." At this time, John Bryant owned the fann. Her paper is now recorded at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, Kentucky.

According to an article in the 1884 edition of the Louisville Courier-Journal, McFaddin's Station was located on Barren River, nearly opposite the mouth of Drake's Creek. The Logan home was also opposite the mouth of Drake' s Creek.

A book written by Irene Sumpter, says that Emmett Logan, Jr. received the home place in a division of the Logan property in the year 1909. This is the same Emmett Logan referred to in Mr. Moulder's article, as I find him owning only one fann on Barren River. Accordingly, the ruins of the Station must have been visible between the years 1909-1917. Those were the years Mr. Logan owned the farm .

McFaddin's Station can be reliably assumed to have been on a high bluff above a spring that flows into Barren River. Most settlements needed a good and sufficient water supply. Another reason to believe it was at this location is that the high bluff afforded protection from Indians that were in this part of the County.

One article states that travelers using the Cumberland Trace Road stopped at the Station for security reasons. The top of the bluff extending down river from the Logan farm used to show signs of the Trace Road. Approximately seventy years ago I followed it during the winter months when leavers were on the THE LONGHUNTER, VOLUME XXIV, ISSUE 4, Page 152 ground and the road was easier to see. I have not seen a map showing the road to be at this location but was told by my father and "old timers· in the neighborhood that it was the old Trace Road.

My father was a schoolteacher at Collett School about the year 1920. The school was located a half mile or so from the Emmett Logan farm. Older people that were in the area told him of knowing about McFaddin's Station and that it was on a bluff near the Logan home.

I have many recollections of the Waller Phillips farm that had been purchased from the Logan family. Several large, black walnut trees stood in the front and side yard of the Logan house. A later owner sold them for one hundred dollars each. The baseboards in the front rooms of the house were of beautiful black walnut. The first tiled bathroom I remember seeing was in this house. The tile was small in size. Metal tubing ran from a ground floor to a room upstairs. A hinged cover was on each end ofthe tubes and was opened while talking with people from one floor to the other.

The water system was unique for the period of time and the Logan family probably installed it. Metal legs supported a large metal tank with the bottom of the tank at a height sufficient for water to fl ow by gravity into the house. About half way down to the spring a concrete roof covered a small gasoline engine that sat back into the bluff. (On 26 July 2000, I visited the old Logan farm and the concrete roof is still in place. A resident living on the farm was glad to learn of its use.) The engine pumped water from the spring to the water tank by way of metal pipes. The bottom pipe extended into a square concrete pit filled with spring water. My fath er bought the engine and used it to pump water from a well at our house. A large maple tree was at the beginning of a downward path, which I would follow to the spring on many occasions.

Large chestnut trees stood on the Logan farm. When Mr. Phillips owned the property, the Business College of Bowling Green would bring the students for an outing and they would gather chestnuts. I have gathered a peck meal sack one half full of chestnuts in a matter of several minutes from a large tree on the Phillips farm in front of my home.

In summary, the Louisville Courier-Journal article and the one by Mr. Moulder, plus information in the Irene Sumpter book and the paper by Wyonia Kimbrough tend to agree on the location of McFaddin's Station. Also, word of mouth statements by older people who lived in the neighborhood, deeds of record at the Warren County, Kentucky Courthouse, and maps showing the location of Barren River and Drake's Creek all lead me to beli eve that McFaddin's Station stood on a bluff above a spring near the home of Emmett Logan.

1797 Kentucky Land Grants South of Green River [continued]

Transcribed by Gail Jackson Miller, CG 425 Midcrest Drive Bowling Green, KY 42101

The Land Grants So uth of Green River are contained in 29 books and comprise 15,730 separate grants. They were granted between 179 7 and 1866. The grants, sometimes called "Headright Claims" were based on an Act of Kentucky General Assembly dated 21 Dec 1795. Until 1797, no person could enter a survey within this area except a soldier. The 1797 Act of the General Assembly opened up the vacant lands in this area to any person possessed of family and over 21 years old. Such person were entitled to not less than 100 acres and not more than 200 acres. They had to have lived on the land f or one year before they came into actual possession. The surveys upon which these grants are based are recorded in 18 books in the Kentucky Land Office. The f ollowing are the first recorded in Volume 1 of these grants. They were transcribedfrom the filmed original Grants South of Green River, Vol. 1, 1797-1803, FHL film 02 72828.

The Great Awakening, 1800

Summarized from Edward Coffman, The Story ofRussellville , pp. 14-16, Russellville, KY: The News Democrat Print, 193 1.

American church history records three great periods of revival, dating from the years 1734, 1800, and 1857. Each period of renewal followed a time of decadence and indifference in church life.

The Second awakening began in the year 1800, and had its beginning in Logan County, Kentucky. It was here that the awakening spread and it was here that the camp meeting had its beginnings. Ministers James MeG ready, William McGee, and Jobn McGee were instrumental in the beginnings of this Great Awakening.

James McGready, a Presbyterian minister, had worked in Pennsylvania and North Carolina prior to coming to Kentucky. In 1796, he came to Logan Coun ty and began to serve small churches as minister. In 1797, McGready was preaching at Duncan's Hill in Logan County. That same year he organized the Gasper Ri ver church. About this same time, two brothers, William McGee, a Presbyterian, and Jobn McGee, a Methodist, came to Green River country to preach.

The beginnings of the revival have been recorded by Dr. L. W. Bacon: "On one occasion, in the woods of Logan County, in July, 1800, the gathered families, many of whom came from afar, tethered their teams and encamped for several days for the unaccustomed privi lege of common worship and Christian preaching. This is believe to have been the first American camp-meeting--an era worth remembering in our history."
