The eldest son of Revol utionar y War soldier Thomas Potter was Lewis • Potter, who was born about 1766. It is believed that hi' birthplace was Henry Count y, Virginia for his father enlisted into th e military f rom there in 1777. , On 15 August 178 7, Lewis Potter marr ied Nancy Hickerson in Fran kl in Count y, Virginia. She was a daugh ter of Thomas and Mar y Hickerson. Soon after thei r marriage, lewis and Nancy moved to what became Lincoln Count y , Kent uck y and resided there from 1788 to 1797. Other members of the Potter family (including his father) also migrated to lincoln Count y. The fi rst record of Lew is Potter in Warren County, Kentucky was in 1799 wh e n the Count y Court granted him 400 acres of land an Lamb ' s Sinking Creek (near t he Barren Count y line) . In a period of on ly 18 years (1799-1817 ) Mr. Potter acqui red 1625 acres of land on Sinking Creek and Little El k Spring in northeastern Warren Coun t y. INFORMATION 1920 CENSUS

On the 20th of March, this year, the 1920 United States Federal Census will become accessible. Copies of it will be available for use at the National Ar chives in Washington and in all of the branches throughout the United States. Copies of the entire census should be on line in all State Libraries shortly. A copy of the Kentucky 1920 Census is on order at the Kentucky Library, Kentucky Building, Western Kentucky University, in Bowling Green, KY and will be available for research by local members of the SKGS.

There is a complete index for each state and territory. The records are con tained on 2706 rolls, and the index fills 8585 rolls. Each roll costs $23 if you wish to purchase. Should you wish to purchase one of particular interest to you, and then donate it to your library, it is tax deductible. Many libraries endeavor to add the rolls pertaining to their state and welcome either rolls or a donation towards this goal.

The data contained on the 1920 schedules includes: names, address, relation ship to the family h ead, sex, race, age, martial status, if foreign born, year of immigration to the United States, whether naturalized and the year of natural ization, school attendance, literacy, birthplace of person and parents, mother tongue of foreign born, ability to speak English, occupation, industry and class of work, home owned or rented, and if owned, whether free or mort gaged.

This information will be invaluable, and will fill in that hard to fill part of history, especially when one does not have relatives that can help them with this time frame. EVANS FAMILY

Ab ner Evans was born 1~ Se p 1760 in Pennsylvania and died 01 Oct 1816 in Warren County, Kentucky. He married Rachel (Murphy ?) about 1793. She was born 18 Nov 1766 and died 19 Sep 1846 in Warren County . They are both buried in the Evans-Wren Cemetery on the McCoy farm in Warren County. According to family lore, the Evans family came from Wales and settled • with William Penn. Some members of the Evans family say that Abner served in the Revoldtionar y War and was a blacksmith at one of the frontier forts along the . The story is that Rachel's father was al.o a blacksmith and could have been at the same frontier fort as Abner. Abner was 17 years of age and Rachel was a young gi rl at the beginni ng of the Revolutionary War. Abner was an ear ly settler in Warren County, Kentucky. The first record of him in the county is on the 1799 Warren County Ta. List where he has 2 horses. Between 1806 and 1808 Abner received three land grants south of the Green River consist i ng of 528 acres. He had the first home in the area .ade of brick, making the brick and building the home himself. Abner is often mentioned in the Warren County property and court records. After Abner's death his son Samuel Evans was appointed administrator of his estate. In 1827 Joseph and Rachel (Evans) Wren and others filed a suit in Ch ancer y. Rachel was allotted for life a widow ' s dower of 1/3 of Abner ' s lands. The resid ue was to be divided into 9 shares equal i n value and divided by lottery. In 1835 members of the Evans family indicate t hat Levi Evans would have title of t he dower of Rachel Evans by her death. (Book 17, page 172 Warren Co KY).

I N HER I TAN C E LAW S

Prior to 187b, a will in Virginia did not have to na.e the wife or eldest son. Their inheritan.e of real estate was set by law, the widow re.eiving her one-third dower and the eldest son re.eiving the remaining two-thirds, unless otherwise spe.ified in the father ' s will. The eldest son also re.eived his mother ' s share when she died . It the eldest son had died, the heir-at-Iaw be.ame the se.ond son. If a man was unmarried, his heir-at-Iaw was his eldest brother, never his father or uncle. In New England, the eldest son did re.eive a double portion (.alled his birthright) of the estate, but definitely not as ou.h as in , Virginia. Ea.h state now has laws whi.h may differ fro. the earl y days of our .ountry, but the early laws relied to a great degree on English .omoon law. (Henry Co. Gen. SOL, Issue 7, Od 1991.) THE OAKLAND COUNTRY by Jennie cole early day. The Shobes, Aliens, Tuckers, Fords and others were members of this church. In 1873 the organization built the firsrt church in Oakland and moved their membership there. On the same hill as the church stood the Pleasant Hill school which was an important school before the public schools were established. The building consisted of several • rooms, but a Masonic Lodge occupied part of the second floor. Boys and girls from a distance boarded in the homes of the community and attended this school. They usually had four teachers, including a music teacher.

The home of Mrs. Ethel Pemberton was built by Woodey Self. The old house that stood on this site was the home for years of Willie Shobe. The home of Eubank was built by Roe Wooten on the site of the old home of Mr. Wooten'S grandfather, James Monroe Tucker. The home of Mr. Tucker was built in a very early day and before Mr. Tucker became the owner it was a tavern. In addition to being a farmer Mr. Tucker was also a tanner. He and his brother Fount Tucker, ran a tannery for four years near the Old Grove Church and when Mr. Tucker moved on the highway he continued to run the tannery until after the Civil War. Then his son William ran it about four years. Mr. Tucker married Elizabeth A. Shobe, a daughter of Jacob Shobe, Sr. They reared a large family but Charles Tucker is the only one living. Dr. James E. Tucker, a physician in the community for many years was a son.

The place now owned by Mrs. Tom Smith and occupied by Charlie Hendricks was the home for many years of Rebecca Middleton, the widow of Samuel Middleton. She was the grandmother of the late Nat Curd of Bowling Green. After the death of Mrs. Middleton, it became the home of Joe Cullins, a native of . Mr. Cullins' first wife was the daughter of Henry Smith and she was the mother of his three oldest children, Henry Cullins being one of them. After the death of his first wife Mr. Cullins married Mary E. Jones, daughter of Absalom Shobe and widow of James W. Jones, Smiths Grove.

The brick house north of Oakland owned by Frank R. Grimes was the old house of Peyton Cook, a large land and slave owner. Later it was the home of his daughter Lonnie Jordan, and her grandson, Wilsford Hines, now of Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Hines sold the home to Frank R. Grimes. NOTE: The horne of Peyton Cook was not the home, as has been erroneously stated, of Anne Cook, connected with the Sharp-Beauchamp tragedy. The girlhood home of Anne Cook was in Bowling Green for some time at least. Anne Cook was related to Peyton Cook, but not a direct descendant.

The home of Edmond Gossom, Sr., was built by him on land that originally was part of the Peyton Cook farm. The home of Edmond Gossom, Jr •. was built bv C. L. Henderson who [page 70] THE LONGHUNTER, VOL XV, NO 2 [page 70]

sold it to D. C. Amos and later it was the home of Mr. Amos ' son-in-law, L. G. Hackney. The home of Craig Middleton was built by Lee Burdle and his sisters, Miss Kate Burdle and Mrs. Moody. The home now owned by Mrs. Edward stout and Miss Rita Middleton was buil t b y their mother, Mrs. Alice " Middleton, about 1890. The old house nearby on the same farm was built by Mrs. Middleton ' s grandfather, William Smith, an early settler and large land and slave owner .

Mr. Meisel bought his home from J. B. Amos who li ved there many years. In an earl y day this was the home of Lafe Long, son-in-law of Mr. Otter whose home was nearer the knob than the land now owned by Mr. Meisel, but it was the home of Tom Davis for quite a while. Mr. Otter sold out and moved to Louisville in an earl y day but his name r emai ns in the gap in the knob nearby known as Otter Gap.

The home of Mrs. Tandy Gossom was built by her father-in-law, Sandy Gossom, Sr. in 1853. The house of John Cowles was built by Sandy Gossom, Jr., son of Sandy Sr., in 1877. The home of B. F. Amos was built by him. This home was built on the site of a home once the home of Gen. Thomas Madison whose wife Susannah was the sister of Patri ck Henry. Later this was the home of Richard Patterson, the grandfather of Mrs. Yandell Page, Bowling Green. Mr. Patterson sold his home to John B. "Jack" Amos, father of B. F. Amos. The wife of Jack Amos was Sarah F. Kirtley, the daughter of Gen. Ambrose Kirtley. They reared a large family. B. F. and J. B. Amos are the only ones living.

Mr. Amos was a nati ve of Hart County and his father, Ransom Amos, was a nati ve of North Carolina. The home of J. B. Amos is on the site of a house that was the home of another Madison, probably a son of the Madison mentioned above. The family graveyard was on this farm and Susannah Madison was buried here. The home of Mr. Amos was built b} Samuel Murrell in 1841. Mr. Murrell was the grandfather of the late Samuel M. Young of Bowling Green. He was a nati ve of Barren County, fought in the War of 1812, was sheriff of Barren County, and represented his district in the st~te Legislature. He was a union man during the War between the States. He kept a tavern and stage coach station. His wife was Elizabeth R. Sterrett . They raised a large family and their home was noted for its hospitality. He li ved to be about 97 years old. After Mr. Murrell retired, his gra nds on Samuel Young, came into possession of his place . Mr. Young sold it to Mr. Henry Cowles about 1887. Mr. Cowles improved the house and made it his home until his death wh en Mr. Amos bought it.

The first house on the site of the home o f Will iam Miller was b uilt by Charles Amos in 1877. After making his home here for a few years, he sold the farm to his brothe r in-law Dan Middleton. The wife of Mr. Amos, Josephine [Page 711 THE LONGHUNTER, VOL XV, NO 2 [page 711

Huntley Murrell, and the wife of Mr. Middleton, Hannah Murrell, were both daughters of George Murrell, a son of Samuel Murrell. After making his home here for a number of years Mr. Middleton sold the place to Henry Cowles. The house burned a few years after Mr. Cowles bought it and he built the present house. Harry Wright, son-in-law of Mr . • Cowles made his home here for years.

The home of Roger Middleton was built by George Murrell, son of Samuel, and occupied by him for some time as a home. Mr . Murrell sold the place to Dr. Albert S. About 1887 Mrs. Belle Amos Middleton bought the place and after some years she added the second story and improved it.

The home of Clyde Spinks was once the home of Dr. Payne, a doctor here for some time after the Drs. Goodwin practiced in the community. The next house down the highway was once the home of Rev . Jesse Grider. After this it was the home of William Meredith for years. Mr. Meredi th represented this c ounty in the state legislature.
