Ecolyrics in Pop Music: a Review of Two Nature Songs
Language & Ecology 2016 www.ecoling.net/articles Ecolyrics in Pop Music: A Review of Two Nature Songs Amir Ghorbanpour [email protected] Ph.D. Student, Department of Linguistics Tarbiat Modarres University, Tehran, Iran Abstract This paper is an ecolinguistic analysis of the lyrics of two nature songs – coined in this paper as ‘eco-lyrics’. The aim was to analyse the underlying stories that lie behind the lyrics, and how they model the natural world. The two songs chosen were We Kill the World by Boney M. (1981) and Johnny Wanna Live by Sandra (1990). In particular, the use of metaphors and appraisal patterns in Boney M.’s song and the use of salience patterns (through personification, naming and activation) in Sandra’s – in terms of Stibbe’s (2015) general classification of the ‘stories we live by’ – were looked at, in order to shed light on how the more-than-human world is represented in each of these songs. Keywords: ecolinguistics, ecolyrics, nature songs, metaphor, salience Language & Ecology 2016 www.ecoling.net/articles 1. Introduction The relatively new discipline of ecolinguistics, as the name implies, aims at studying the interrelationship between language and ecology. Michael Halliday (1990), in his seminal work which is often credited with launching ecolinguistics as a new recognisable form of the ecological humanities (Stibbe, 2015: 83), provided linguists with the incentive to consider the ecological context and consequences of language. In his speech at the AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) conference in 1990, Halliday stressed ‘the connection between language on the one hand, and growthism, classism and speciesism on the other, admonishing applied linguists not to ignore the role of their object of study in the growth of environmental problems’ (Fill, 1998: 43). -
America's Changing Mirror: How Popular Music Reflects Public
AMERICA’S CHANGING MIRROR: HOW POPULAR MUSIC REFLECTS PUBLIC OPINION DURING WARTIME by Christina Tomlinson Campbell University Faculty Mentor Jaclyn Stanke Campbell University Entertainment is always a national asset. Invaluable in times of peace, it is indispensable in wartime. All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front. 1 Franklin D. Roosevelt, June 12, 1943 Whether or not we admit it, societies change in wartime. It is safe to say that after every war in America’s history, society undergoes large changes or embraces new mores, depending on the extent to which war has affected the nation. Some of the “smaller wars” in our history, like the Mexican-American War or the Spanish-American War, have left little traces of change that scarcely venture beyond some territorial adjustments and honorable mentions in our textbooks. Other wars have had profound effects in their aftermath or began as a result of a 1 Telegram to the National Conference of the Entertainment Industry for War Activities, quoted in John Bush Jones, The Songs that Fought the War: Popular Music and the Home Front, 1939-1945 (Lebanon, NH: University Press of New England, 2006), 31. catastrophic event: World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the current wars in the Middle East. These major conflicts create changes in society that are experienced in the long term, whether expressed in new legislation, changed social customs, or new ways of thinking about government. While some of these large social shifts may be easy to spot, such as the GI Bill or the baby boom phenomenon in the 1940s and 1950s, it is also interesting to consider the changed ways of thinking in modern societies as a result of war and the degree to which information is filtered. -
We Are So Excited to Welcome You Back
WE ARE SO EXCITED TO WELCOME YOU BACK I couldn’t be happier to finally be writing this welcome message to you. It’s been an interesting time since my last one; our centenary came and went; our stage was filled not with performers but emergency food provisions; and our team were meeting colleagues through computer screens rather than greeting guests in our beautiful building. We know it’s been a hard year for everyone else too and we’re so excited to welcome you back to experience the magic of theatre once more with this packed programme. It’s only right that after the 100th year of this local treasure, our first season back should be filled with national ones, so we’re delighted to be welcoming cricketing legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott, much-loved music star Tony Christie and the fantastically funny Jasper Carrott amongst a host of brilliant acts this autumn. Fans of folk and country in particular are in for double delight as both The Shires and Seth Lakeman will be gracing our stage while there are also appearances from Elkie Brooks, Eddi Reader, Lee Mead, Michael Portillo and even the brilliant Jason Manford. Lastly, if you missed our fantastic centenary exhibition on stage this summer, there’s an extra chance to see it and find out about the Palace’s fascinating story at our Heritage Open Day event. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon! Carys Coulton-Jones Theatre Manager YOUR SAFETY We know that many of our guests will still be a little nervous about visiting after so long. -

The Heritage Game: Economics, Policy, and Practice, Alan Peacock, Ilde Rizzo , 2008, 0191526614, 9780191526619. A notable feature in cultural life is the growing demand to preserve and promote public access to historical buildings and sites, and artistic treasures of the past. Governments are increasingly involved in financing and regulating private attempts to meet this growing demand as well as extending their own provision of these treasures in state and locally owned museums and galleries. These developments raise important issues about the scope, content, and relevance of heritage policies in today's world. Written by two leading figures in the field of cultural economics, this authoritative book focuses on the impact of economic analysis on the formulation and implementation of heritage policy. Review for MARYPORT BLUES FESTIVAL (Main Stage) @ Maryport, Cumbria 29Th - 31St July 2016 by Rosy Greer - Lancashire Blues Archive
Review for MARYPORT BLUES FESTIVAL (Main Stage) @ Maryport, Cumbria 29th - 31st July 2016 http://maryportblues.org/ By Rosy Greer - Lancashire Blues Archive Another year of this great festival set in the charming fishing port of Maryport, on the west coast of Cumbria. With Main Stage marquee hosting some cracking blues makers plus an Outside Stage with a mix of music and superb Trail venues throughout the town all added to the great atmosphere. Staying within the bounds of the Main Stage this year, we were delighted with class line up. Friday Kicking off on Friday evening were The Mighty Bosscats, a 4 piece blues band from Essex. Fronted by guitarist singer songwriter Richard Townsend, they had a leaning towards country Texas blues. An excellent band to kick start the festival. http://www.richardtownend.com/ The Mighty Bosscats Following were 3 piece rock band from Manchester, Blackballed. With their own style of 'groove rock', they are certainly a great stage band and gave a high energy entertaining performance. http://www.blackballedband.com/ Blackballed The penultimate act for Friday were The Stevie Nimmo Trio. Always a crowd puller and it was good to see the Marquee so busy. Playing classic blues rock, in Stevie’s own style with a full on sound. Excellent guitar work as usual with superb bass. http://www.stevienimmo.com/ Stevie Nimmo Trio The final band of the evening were The Ian Siegal Band, a favourite in Maryport. Ian played his own individual style of country blues with his full band. A great sound showcasing many Siegal classics.
