At this Annual Gathering we are continuing new activities introduced last year to broaden the Annual Gathering beyond competitions, to piping and drumming on other instruments and activities for players who promote piping and drumming through community performances. We have added two events per band grade as part of the rollout of this program across all BCPA sanctioned competitions over the next two years. We continue advancements to improve the Annual Gathering and it is a tribute to the Annual Gather- ing Organizing Committee members for their tremendous efforts to ensure its success. However, it is because of you, the competitors, spectators and patrons, that the Annual Gathering has endured for 85 years and become what its title means, an annual gathering of the piping and drumming community for competition and comraderie. It is the largest solos and bands competition on our circuit and we are very grateful for your continued support. We would also like to acknowledge the competitors and adjudicators who have traveled to be here with us. Your talents are greatly appreciated and you are providing us with an opportunity to reacquaint with and make new friends. We hope everyone attending will enjoy the events this weekend, and will return again next year. Troy BC Pipers’ Association 85th Annual Gathering 5 2017 SENIOR ADJUDICATORS Richard Hawke MNZM lives in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he is the Pipe Band Director and full time piping tutor at St Andrew’s College – New Zealand’s premier school pipe band. Richard has recently retired as the Pipe Major of the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band (1985-1990, 2010-2017), who have had many successes in recent years in New Zealand as well as qualifying at the World Pipe Band Championships in 2014 & 2015. In 2012 Richard was awarded, in the New Zealand National Queen’s Birthday Honours list, as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Pipe Bands. As well as with Pipe Bands, Richard has gained National and International success as a solo piping competitor. His highest achievements include Highland Piping Society of London’s Gold Medal, (Piobaireachd) at Oban (2007), among many others, across Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. Richard was initially taught by Neville Burney and the late Bill Boyle, followed by the late Donald Bain and is currently mentored by Murray Henderson (Scotland). James MacHattie is the Principal of the College of Piping, in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. James began piping in a youth pipe band in Sas- katoon, Saskatchewan, and the formative experiences he enjoyed there have carried him to become one of Canada’s most respected active pipers. He played with the Edmonton Caledonia Pipe Band before moving to BC, where he played one year with the City of Victoria Pipe Band before joining the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. With SFU he won the World Pipe Band Championship in 1996 and 1999, performed at Carnegie Hall and participated in two live recordings. In 2000, James moved to Toronto, and joined the Toronto Police Pipe Band, becoming the Pipe Major in 2004. James led the band to North American Championship wins in 2004 and 2006. He played with the 78th Fraser Highlanders from 2007 to 2009 before moving back to BC. He played the 2010 season with SFU before moving to Summerside, PEI. James has enjoyed a successful career as a solo competitor, having won major prizes across Canada, the US, Scotland and France. He is a consistent prize winner in the Gold Medal contests at Oban and Inverness. He is also an active composer, judge, performer and teacher. James holds an MA in Classical Studies from the University of BC. 6 BC Pipers’ Association 85th Annual Gathering 2017 SENIOR ADJUDICATORS, CONT’D Ian Lawson hails from Co. Armagh in Northern Ireland. Ian playing drums at the age of 9 with Waringsford Pipe band under instruction from Sandy Steele. He then progressed under the tutelage of the Rev. Frank Gibson who developed his band playing and solo technique. Ian had quite a return on this, winning Ulster and All Irelands titles over a few years. From here, Ian progressed to play with ‘The Pipes and Drums of the RUC’, before moving to take over the L/D position with ‘Bleary and District’ which was his home town band. In that period, the band was very successful and went from G4 to G1 in eight years, winning every Major championship along the way. Then, Ian was very fortunate to be invited to play with Simon Fraser University Pipe Band where he spent seven very successful years, culminating in winning the World championship and Drum corps prize in 2008 and 2009. Following this, Ian moved to Inveraray and District which is proving a natural progression on the style of music he has been accustomed to over the last 10 years. Ian is actively teaching and advising solo students on a regular basis, at home and across the world, conducting workshops, and more recently was added to the RSPBA Adjudicator Panel. • Musical Traditions KS4 Music - Television Teacher's Notes
B B C Northern Ireland Learning musical traditions KS4 music - television teacher's notes Programme 1 The Pipe Band “All for One” Broadcast Dates Programmes are broadcast on BBC 2 in Northern Ireland on Thursday mornings from 10.50 - 11.20am. Programme Title Broadcast Date 1 The Pipe Band 9th November 2 The Harp 16th November 3 The Metrical Psalm 23rd November 4 The Uilleann Pipes 30th November Programme 1 – The Pipe Band By Samuel Baillie Learning Objectives: At the end of the programme pupils will have: • Developed an awareness of the extent of the pipe band tradition in Northern Ireland and its strong community links and social function. • Learned about its separate musical sections and the importance of teamwork. • Become acquainted with Piobaireachd (Pibroch – pronounced “pibrock”), the ancient music of the Scottish Highland Bagpipe. • Gained an understanding of the complexities of the structure and tuning of the instrument. About the Programme This programme provides us with a close and personal view of the complexities and commitment of what it is like to be involved in pipe bands. The main thrust is the competitive edge of playing in bands and the importance of working as a team. The development of pipe bands and their contribution to the social fabric of local communities is illustrated but this is set beside the need for highly developed technical skill and a full understanding of the component parts of the bagpipe as an instrument, which is essential to obtain good sound. People on the programme emphasise this aspect of their enjoyment of pipe bands and appear to relish the challenge of getting it “just right” for the moment of performance.

  • Book 2 of the Structured Learning Guide of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association
SECOND EDITION 1993 PREFACE It is with very real pleasure that I introduce Book 2 of the Structured learning Guide of The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. The growing international popularity of Book 1 in the series is positive proof of the acceptance of the clear concise teaching methods being used in the education programme now introduced. Pipe band enthusiasts all over the world are due a debt of gratitude to the members of the team of diligent, talented personnel who have created and presented this comprehensive and imaginative learning aid. This debt will be amply repaid by the conscientious use of Books 1 and 2 and by the subsequent attainment of a higher standard of performance of Pipe Band Music. E. Sturgeon PRESIDENT - 1 INTRODUCTION The Music Board of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association is delighted to present Book 2 in the Structured Learning series which covers the revised curriculum of the Intermediate Certificate course. We believe that this second publication provides a well balanced and coherent framework of learning material against which students can further develop their musical competence in piping and drumming. The successful presentation format which was established in Book 1 has been continued and built upon to ensure continuity of the learning process. It also maintains the capability of the material for use in a distance learning mode where the student has limited or perhaps no access to formal instruction. A key objective of the Music Board is to offer musical education of the highest quality and to support this by the provision of appropriate learning resource material which will be available to the membership of the Association and to the many Affiliated Associations throughout the World.
