A Pittsburgh Firefighters for 27 years, John was a founding member of the Pittsburgh Memorial Firefighters Pipe Band, which he started in order for the Pitts- burgh Firefighters to have their own people playing for fallen Pittsburgh firefighters funerals. A Navy veteran, John was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1983, plus reserves in 2002, having spent most of his naval career as a cook. As a civilian he put the skills he learned in the Navy to good use by volunteering to cook for the Sacred Heart community in Shadyside. John and his wife Francine’s cookies were legendary. John generously gave his time to community organizations such as the Balmoral School of Piping, the Veterans Administration, and others. John is survived by his wife Francine, and four children: Joshua, Adam (also a piper), Dziadzi, and Lily. -by George Balderose
