Pentecost — June 9, 2019 SAINT MARY’S & SAINT ELIZABETH’S CATHOLIC CHURCHES Phone: 701-579-4312 FATHER GARY BENZ-PASTOR [email protected]; Cell Phone 701-509-9504; Rectory 701-579-4874 VICTOR DVORAK –DEACON www.stmaryschurchnewengland.com “The Advocate, the whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything that I told you.” A Maryknoll missionary nun was imprisoned in China after the Communist Revolution. Angry crowds shouted outside the prison where she was held, “Death to the western imperialists.” One night, the nun woke up with a start, believing she had heard a guard at the door of her cell; she feared it was time for her execution. But, it turned out no one was there. She thought to herself, “Perhaps it was the Holy Spirit, reminding me that He was with me. I call upon His peace and consolation while in prison.” This leads us to ask, “Where in my life, at this moment in time, do I need the peace and consolation of the Holy Spirit?” Jesus sends the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, into our world. On our part, we just have to accept Him in our lives.

Familiaris Consortio (cont.) The Situation of the Family in the World Today #6. Worthy of our attention also is the fact that in the countries of the so-called Third World, families often lack both the means necessary for survival, such as food, work, housing, and medicine and the most elementary freedoms. In the richer countries, on the contrary, excessive prosperity and the consumer mentality, paradoxically joined to a certain anguish and uncertainty about the future, deprive married couples of the generosity and courage needed for raising up new human life: thus, human life is often perceived not as a blessing, but as a danger from which to defend oneself.

A great day for our diocese Next Monday and Tuesday, I will be away from our parishes for the ordination of Deacon Gregory Crane and Deacon Brandon Wolf (June 10th) and the First Mass of Thanksgiving for Deacon Brandon Wolf (June 11th). There will be no weekday Masses at Saint Mary’s or Saint Elizabeth’s on Tuesday, June 11th. Please pray for our newly ordained priests, that they will be holy servants of Jesus Christ and that the Lord will sustain them in their pastoral ministry. Praise God as well for being so good to our diocese by giving us such wonderful new priests. We are truly blessed!

Let’s honor the right person I am grateful for the kind offer of having a celebration at Saint Mary’s on Saturday, June 29th to celebrate my 20th anniversary as a priest, but I will respectfully decline this offer. As it is so close to our parish feast day, June 27th, the Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, I want Our Lady to be honored instead. By her intercession, she has done so much for our parish in its 109 years of existence and more than ever, we need her intercession today. That day, we will have a parish feast day celebration (after the 5:00 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass), a beautiful tradition in the life of the Church. If you had considered offering me an ordination anniversary gift, please make a donation to our Little Saints Daycare or to our youth fund instead. This would bring me great happiness, to support these important ministries. I also believe that like you, in the vocation of marriage, you only celebrate the traditional significant anniversaries: 25th; 50th; 60th; etc. I promise that when I celebrate my 25th anniversary in five years, I will send out invitations to my former parishes, including Saint Mary’s and Saint Elizabeth’s. Save up the festivities for that day! Until then, thank you for the spiritual bouquet that is being formed and for the anniversary baked goods that are filling my freezer (or should be . . . hint, hint).

A point to ponder—-If you want God to close and open a door, let go of the doorknob. MASS & ADORATION SCHEDULE May Christ who called you take you home

$ 400.00 God’s Share $ Saint of the Week, (675-754) Feast day: June 5th Patron of: Germans; brewers; and World Youth Day It may come as a surprise to those of Germans descent that their patron, Saint Boniface, was actually English. Saint Boniface was born in 675 A.D. near Exeter into a respected and prosperous family. When he finished his academic career at the prestigious monastic school of Saint Mary Major in Exeter, Saint Boniface made known his desire to become a Bene- dictine monk. His father protested, but eventually consented to his son’s wishes. Saint Boniface entered wholeheartedly into the life of prayer and penance as a monk and was very content living the mo- nastic life. But, this would all change in a dramatic manner when he was called upon to lead a missionary effort to the pagans of . This first missionary effort was a complete failure, because the pagan leader of Friesland declared war on Christians and destroyed the churches and monasteries that the English Benedictines had established. So, Saint Boniface returned to Eng- land and hoped and prayed for a second missionary journey. This came about within a few years, when with the blessing of Pope Gregory II, Saint Boniface made his way to Germany, again to Friesland, but also to the states of Thuringia and Hesse. The state of Hesse had never been evangelized and Saint Boni- face had to start from scratch. Needing more spiritual tools at his disposal for the success of his missionary effort, Saint Boniface went to Rome to be ordained a , so that he could confirm catechumens and ordain priests to assist him in his missionary labors. But, when he returned to Germany, Saint Boniface found that things had worsened since his departure, namely that the new converts had reverted back to pagan religious customs, including the worship of gods whom they believed resided in majestic trees. Knowing that the people needed a reason to let go, Saint Boniface called the tribes together to display the power of the Blessed . As the people watched, Saint Boniface approached the giant oak of Geismar, a sacred tree dedicated to Thor, and with one swoop of his axe, the massive tree split into four parts and these fell to the ground in the shape of a cross. There stood Saint Boniface, axe in hand, unharmed by their pagan gods, strong in the power of the one triune God. He used the wood of the tree to build a chapel on the very spot where the tree had stood. After his success in Hesse, Saint Boniface turned his efforts once again to the state of Thuringia, converting pagans and renewing the faith of Christians who had been converted earlier by Irish missionaries, whose haphazard methods of evangeliza- tion were henceforth to be the bane of Saint Boniface’s life. But, with the help of his brother and sister, he established a number of monasteries in this region, centers of prayer and missionary training in his evangelization efforts. The Lord blessed his efforts and soon much of Germany and the Netherlands were converted to the Catholic Faith. After establishing four bishoprics in Bavaria, Saint Boniface was named an archbishop, the Archbishop of Mainz, which further aided his missionary efforts. With a centraliza- tion of power, he was able to ensure the orthodox training of his priests, which allowed for greater success in evangelization. Pagan leaders were concerned at the great success of Saint Boniface, because when he renewed the faith of the Frank- ish Kingdom, it became a spiritual and temporal power which grew stronger at their expense. One day, on the Feast of Pentecost, as he was reading the Scriptures to Christian neophytes, a band of pagan Friesians attacked him with an axe and killed him im- mediately. Saint Boniface was buried at , in a monastery he had established, and his remains are beneath the high altar of the Fulda , formerly the abbey church. He is revered by German Catholics, because he brought the Gospel and the Church to their country. The gift of the Faith has been a source of great strength and hope in the trying moments of German history. In times of great darkness, the Faith planted by Saint Boniface has served as a beacon of light. Help wanted As a priest, I also must pick up the slack and assist where I can in the needs of parish life. At Saint Mary’s, I am happy to care for the flowers and plants around the buildings, but at times, I also have to be away from the parish and need volunteers to water for me when I am away. This summer, I have a couple of weddings, an ordination, and chaplaincy work at Trinity Youth Camp that will take me out of town for a number of days. If you would like to assist me with watering the flowers/plants this sum- mer, please contact me at 701-509-9504. Know that the watering takes about forty-five minutes each day. There is compensation for this work: you get to park your vehicle for a month in the spot outside of church marked, “Reserved for the Pastor.” What a deal! [Note to self. Get cracking on marking out a spot in front of church marked, “Reserved for the Pastor”].
