In a country where literature had always been Dking, musical genres that celebrated words – such as songs or opera – was naturally on top of the pile. ‘Pure’ (or absolute) music was rarely heard. Composing music that was freed from the shackles of a text and which allowed passion free rein, even though it eschewed showy virtuosity, Franck rehabilitated chamber music and the symphony, genres that had been regarded as German specialities. His work as a teacher (he was professor of organ at the Paris Con servatoire from 1872 until his death in 1890) should also be borne in mind when evaluating his importance; this activity is inseparable from his contribution to the emer gence of a serious, highly struc tured type of French music that had no reason to envy its German counter part.

  • The Seventh Sunday of Easter (C) 2Nd June
THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (C) 2ND JUNE 2019 ‘Father, may they be one in us as you are in me and I am in you, so that the world may believe it was you who sent me’ (John 17, 21). S THE POLITICAL CRISIS DEEPENS in this country, our focus must be upon Our Saviour, Christ A the Lord. Our prayers are powerful, and we must respond to the anxiety and confusion by entrusting ourselves and our society to God’s merciful love. At the same time, we must uphold and respect the rule of law. Even if governments totter and fall, even if the media jubilantly fill our hearts with despondency, we have the Holy Spirit to impart to the fearful and confused. The divisions are clear enough, but the issues are so incomprehensible that the experts, especially the politicians, know not what they are. Furthermore, the crisis in other countries also gives ground for alarm. The search for security leads inevitably to extremes of right and left. We are now faced with an opportunity and a moment of grace. We are not powerless or hopeless or gloomy for the spirit of God fills all the earth, ‘and we have the mind of Christ.’ Dom Michael Clothier The results of the recent MEP elections show a country that is deeply divided within itself. Even the break-up of the United Kingdom seems once again to be a possibility. The divisions within the two traditional major parties resemble the cracquelure in an Old Master painting in need of urgent restoration.

While in the United States, Maria will share her language and culture with U.S. communities to inspire Americans to travel and study overseas, and to help make U.S. citizens better prepared to engage with businesses, governments, and organizations abroad. Maria grew up in Naantali and moved to Turku when she was seventeen years old. Her mother is originally from Lapua (near Seinäjoki) and her father from Rääkkylä, Pohjois-Karjala, so her roots come from other areas in Finland. She has worked there as a research assistant, teaching advanced Finnish to second language learners since Fall 2012. She also taught Finnish in France in 2012. Maria Hokkanen is one of over 400 young educators from 50 Program In Brief countries who will travel to the United States in the 2015- 2016 academic year through the Fulbright FLTA Program Talking About Finnish to help internationalize U.S. colleges and universities, a key Maria Hokkanen goal of many institutions as they prepare students for the 21st century workforce and globalized world.
