That's the verdict of some 15 major studios in the beleaguered Los Angeles market, where an oversaturation of facilities and an ongoing shortage of work has led to a reported 30 studios nailing up the "For Sale" sign. There are an estimated 250 studios in the Los Angeles area. Business in the last six months can be hest characterized as "inconsistent." Some rooms are running at a greatly reduced percentage of their normal busi- ness and have had to lay off staff. A commitment to minimizing the project's ecological footprint informed all aspects of the design. The main architectural feature of this project is the building's owner-controlled double-façade system. The occupant is able to adjust the operable screens of the building façade as necessary for privacy, views, shading, and thermal comfort. As a result, the facade is virtually redesigned "live" from within, responding to the occupants of the building in real time. The façade also enhances the existing streetscape and promotes a lively pedestrian environment. By visually breaking up the façade into smaller, articulated moving elements, the building appears to move with the passing cars and people. But that’s exactly what veteran troubadour Jesse Winchester did last fall in New York when he sang his wonderfully poignant ballad about two teenagers in love, “Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding,” a standout number from his enchanting 2009 album, “Love Filling Station.” You can watch it here: http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uKGWpqnS8E%20 The setting was Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, where Costello’s Sundance TV music series, “Spectacle,” filmed its first two seasons in front of loudly appreciative audiences. Louisiana native Winchester — who appeared on an episode alongside Costello, Case, Sheryl Crow and Ron Sexsmith — quietly stole the show with that song and an equally spare but stunning version of “The Brand New Tennessee Waltz,” an understated classic from his 1970 debut album. “Doing ‘Spectacle’ has been a big boost for my career,” said Winchester, who kicks off a five- city California tour here Friday night at the all-ages AMSD Concerts (formerly Acoustic Music San Diego) in Normal Heights. “I’m working at least twice as much as I used to.     COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS “LATINOS AND BASEBALL” COLLECTING INITIATIVE Latino baseball players have been interwoven in the fabric of Major League Baseball for years. They've been some of the greatest, well-known names in baseball history. To reflect and celebrate that rich history, the National Museum of American History (“NMAH”) in collaboration with the Smithsonian Latino Center, launched Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues. The multi-year community collecting initiative focuses on the historic role that baseball has played as a social and cultural force within Latino communities across the nation. The project launched a series of collecting events in late February in San Bernardino, California. A second event will be held in Los Angeles on July 17, 2016, and a third will be held in Syracuse, New York, on September 15, 2016. The events are designed to generate interest in the initiative, build on community relationships, record oral histories, and identify objects for possible acquisition by local historical associations as well as for the Smithsonian collections. The collaborative initiative seeks to document stories from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico and plans to collect a number of objects that could include baseball equipment; stadium signs; game memorabilia, such as handmade or mass-produced jerseys and tickets; food vendor signs; home movies; and period photographs. Curators will select objects based on the stories they represent and the insight they provide into the personal, community, and national narratives of the national pastime. “Baseball has played a major role in everyday American life since the 1800s, providing a means of celebrating both national and ethnic identities and building communities,” said John Gray, director of NMAH.

    December 1974 Approximately 286 reasons why you should listen to Jesse Winchester By Giovanni Daddomo If you’ve been a reader of Zigzag for as long as I have, i.e., since very early on, you’ll recall how at the start there weren’t too many interviews, most of the features being of the type now more often found in the younger fan magazines such as Fat Angel, Omaha Rainbow, Hot Wacks et al, that is, extended eulogies of a band/singer garnished with whatever biographical information the authors were/are able to glean from their subjects’ press offices. I’d like to revert to that praiseworthy (if wanting) form in the case of Jesse Winchester because (a) I doubt if enough people are familiar enough with Jesse’s work for an extended interview to be warranted at this time, and (b) because he wasn’t in when I phoned him. He was a musical infant, playing piano by the time he was six and organ in the local church by the time he was twelve. In 1959 Jesse discovered rock’n’roll, got himself a cheap guitar and joined a group on the strength of the three chords he learned the same day he bought the guitar. His heroes at this time were Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis. Jesse played the local clubs, bars, dancehalls and college circuits with various bands and eventually (1967) ended up in Hamburg with a now forgotten band.

    JAMES TAYLOR Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi- platinum awards for a catalog running from 1970’s Sweet Baby James to his Grammy Award-winning efforts Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his accomplishments, James Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 saw his induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for James Taylor at Christmas. In 2008 Taylor garnered another Emmy nomination for One Man Band album. Raised in North Carolina, Taylor now lives in western Massachusetts. Songwriters and producers from Stockholm have buttressed the careers of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Usher, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Pitbull, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and any number of other artists you’ve probably listened to while dancing, shopping, making out, or waiting on hold over the past decade. (And it’s not just American pop music that has Scandinavian fingerprints all over it: When Azerbaijan won the Eurovision contest in a 2011 upset, they did it with a song written for them by two Swedes.) If Americans are aware of this phenomenon, it is probably because they’ve heard about the legendary Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin. There are any number of ways to express Martin’s ubiquity, but here’s one: From 2010 to 2011, the pop idol Katy Perry spent an unprecedented 69 consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 10, surpassing the previous record-holder, the 1990s Swedish group Ace of Base, by four months.
