GEPHYRA 8 2011 143–184 Terrance Michael Patrick DUGGAN An interpretation of some unpublished in situ and recorded Rum Seljuk 13th c. external and internal figural relief work on the Belkıs (Aspendos) Palace, Antalya Abstract: This article is divided into four parts. Firstly, it notes the precedent provided by the conversion of the Roman theatre at Bosra in Syria into an Ayyubid Palace, for the conversion of the Roman theater into the Rum Seljuk palace at Belkis–Aspendos and the known extensive use made of Syrian trained architects for important architectural projects by Rum Seljuk Sul- tans in the first half of the 13th c. Secondly, the two bands of Seljuk low relief depictions of fe- lines and a deer on a series of re–carved Roman limestone blocks on the exterior wall by the door leading to the southern köşk–pavilion erected above the parados and upon the lintel over this door, discovered by the author in 2007, extending over a length of nearly 10 m are de- scribed and the deliberate pecking of the surface of these low relief depictions it is suggested, was to provide bonding for applied painted stucco carved relief–work that completed this relief work on the exterior palace facade. The third section describes the painted Seljuk tympanum relief sculpture made of stucco plaster that concealed the Roman relief carving of Dionysus in the pediment of the sceanae frons in the 13th c. A sculptural relief depiction of a nude female figure which was fortunately recorded by Charles Texier early in the 19th c. -

He is also a qualified Charter Engineer from the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. Mr. Mofak Salman is an author of a book “ Brief History of Iraqi Turkmen”. He is the Turkmeneli Party representative for both Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. He has written a large number of articles that were published in various newspapers. 3 Purpose and Scope This book was written with two clear objectives. Firstly, to make an assessment of the current position of Turkmen in Iraq, and secondly, to draw the world’s attention to the situation of the Turkmen. This book would not have been written without the support of Turkmen all over the world. I wish to reveal to the world the political situation and suffering of the Iraqi Turkmen under the Iraqi regime, and to expose Iraqi Kurdish bandits and reveal their premeditated plan to change the demography of the Turkmen-populated area. I would like to dedicate this book to every Turkmen who has been detained in Iraqi prisons; to Turkmen who died under torture in Iraqi prisons; to all Turkmen whose sons and daughters were executed by the Iraqi regime; to all Turkmen who fought and died without seeing a free Turkmen homeland; and to the Turkmen City of Kerkuk, which is a bastion of cultural and political life for the Turkmen resisting the Kurdish occupation. -

International Journal of Communication 7 (2013), 2361-2385 1932–8036/20130005 Soft Power or Illusion of Hegemony: The Case of the Turkish Soap Opera “Colonialism” ZAFER YÖRÜK PANTELIS VATIKIOTIS Izmir University of Economics The article develops two simultaneous arguments; one is theoretical, and the other is analytic. The theoretical argument is based on an assessment of the utility of the concept of “soft power” in comparison to the Gramscian concept of hegemony in understanding the developments in the recent regional power games in the geographical area consisting of Eastern Europe and the near and Middle East. The analytic argument examines the popularity of Turkish soap operas, both among a cross-cultural audience and within the wider context of cultural, economic, and political influences, and in so doing, it points out challenges and limits for Turkey’s regional power. Introduction This article notes the recent boom in the popularity of Turkish soap operas in the Middle East, the Balkans, and some (predominantly “Turkic”) former Soviet Republics in Asia, and examines the discourse of Turkish “soft power” that has developed upon this cultural development. The research focuses here on the analysis of two case studies—of the Middle East and Greece— where the Turkish series are very popular. Both cases are able to contribute different perspectives and explanations of this “cultural penetration” across both sides of a geographical area containing Eastern Europe and the near and Middle East, evaluating Turkey’s “influence” accordingly.1 1 In this regard, the limits of the analysis of the present study are set. Although a general framework of the perception of the Turkish series is provided along both case studies (popularity; aspirations and identifications), further research is needed in order to provide a detailed account of the impact of Turkish series on the related societies. -

QUEST N. 6 – FOCUS “Thousands great saints:” Evliya Çelebi in Ottoman Palestine by Yaron Ben-Naeh Abstract Evliya’s description of his journey in 17th century Ottoman Palestine is a good example of the importance of travelogue, especially as it gives another viewpoint, that of a Muslim scholar. Through his eyes, it is possible to see the country, hear local traditions and get a better understanding of realities in that time and place. This article should be considered as an attempt to initiate either a greater research project on Evliya’s Seyahatname concerning Palestine or a collection and publication of other Muslim travelers’ narratives from the Ottoman period, which are scarce and not always accessible. - Introduction - Early Ottoman Palestine - Evliya Çelebi and his Travelogue - Rulers and Residents of Palestine - Description of the Country - Culture and Religious Life - Appendix Introduction In contrast to the hundreds of books from the 16th to the 19th century, written by Christian travelers and pilgrims to the Holy Land in various European languages, and the dozens of books written by Jewish travelers and pilgrims in Hebrew, there are only few descriptions written in Arabic or Turkish. This lacuna could be well explained by the absence of a tendency towards travelling among Muslim scholars and moreover by the fact that Palestine was a province of minor importance in the Ottoman Empire. It was mainly significant as being the most relevant route from Damascus to Cairo and as the locus of various holy places, of which the Haram al-Sharif [the Temple Mount] and the al-Aqsa mosque in it, were the most important. -
A Rhetorical History of the British Constitution of Israel, 1917-1948
A RHETORICAL HISTORY OF THE BRITISH CONSTITUTION OF ISRAEL, 1917-1948 by BENJAMIN ROSWELL BATES (Under the Direction of Celeste Condit) ABSTRACT The Arab-Israeli conflict has long been presented as eternal and irresolvable. A rhetorical history argues that the standard narrative can be challenged by considering it a series of rhetorical problems. These rhetorical problems can be reconstructed by drawing on primary sources as well as publicly presented texts. A methodology for doing rhetorical history that draws on Michael Calvin McGee's fragmentation thesis is offered. Four theoretical concepts (the archive, institutional intent, peripheral text, and center text) are articulated. British Colonial Office archives, London Times coverage, and British Parliamentary debates are used to interpret four publicly presented rhetorical acts. In 1915-7, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration and the McMahon-Hussein correspondence. Although these documents are treated as promises in the standard narrative, they are ambiguous declarations. As ambiguous documents, these texts offer opportunities for constitutive readings as well as limiting interpretations. In 1922, the Mandate for Palestine was issued to correct this vagueness. Rather than treating the Mandate as a response to the debate between realist foreign policy and self-determination, Winston Churchill used epideictic rhetoric to foreclose a policy discussion in favor of a vote on Britain's honour. As such, the Mandate did not account for Wilsonian drives in the post-War international sphere. After Arab riots and boycotts highlighted this problem, a commission was appointed to investigate new policy approaches. In the White Paper of 1939, a rhetoric of investigation limited Britain's consideration of possible policies. -

Turkey’s Changing Relations with Syria, Iran, and Israel Since the 2003 Iraqi War Dr. Banu Eligr Turkey’s relations with Syria and Iran were strained for almost two decades. This was primarily because both countries had supported the Kurdish separatist terrorist organization the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, also known as Kongra- Gel) since the organization launched its war against Turkey in 1984. But these relations have completely changed in the aftermath of the 2003 Iraqi war. Turkey has been enhancing its ties with Syria and Iran, at a time when the United States has been trying to isolate those countries. This has occurred because Turkey, Syria, and Iran are all concerned about potential Iraqi territorial disintegration in the future, which might produce a Kurdish state in the North. This, in turn, might lead to irredentist claims on the Kurdish-populated sectors of all three countries, which would threaten their territorial integrity. Since the Iraqi war, the PKK, after renouncing a unilateral cease-fire in the summer of 2004, has resumed its terrorist attacks in Turkey; 1,007 Turkish citizens have been killed or wounded as a result of terrorist attacks.1 In August 2005, the PKK also launched a campaign of violence in Syria and Iran.2 Because of the continued presence of the PKK in the American-controlled region of northern Iraq and the mistreatment of Turkmens in Telafer and Kirkuk, Turkey has been deeply questioning the extent to which the United States can continue to be considered a trustworthy ally.3 Anti-Americanism is on the rise August 2006 in Turkey. -

Three Faiths, One Holy Land An Interfaith Study on Holy Land Pilgrimages in the Early Modern Period Crystal Kolden The Holy Land, encompassing the city of Jerusalem and its surrounding religious sites, has long been a destination for pilgrims from all three major monotheistic religions, some of the earliest dating back to the fourth century. Following the Ottoman conquest in 1517, the region experienced a pax Ottomanica1 during the 16th and 17th centuries, and the Holy Land saw a great influx of pilgrims. With this tradition of pilgrimage came a vast convergence of ideas and views originating from diverse geographical regions and religious backgrounds. This study examines the travel accounts of four pilgrims of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths to begin unraveling this complex intersection, as well as explore the ways in which these differing faiths and places of origin influence perceptions of the same geographical region. The first pilgrim is David Reubeni, a Jew claiming to be from the Jewish kingdom of Habor in central Arabia. He visited Jerusalem and surrounding holy sites in 1523. Henry Timberlake, a Protestant Christian merchant, then traveled to Jerusalem in 1601. The third pilgrim, Evliya Tshelebi, was a Muslim travel-writer from Istanbul who visited Syria and Palestine in 1648-1650 and again in 1672. Lastly is Henry Maundrell, a Church of England clergyman stationed at the Levant Company’s consulate in Aleppo, Syria, who journeyed to Jerusalem in 1697. 1 Rhoads Murphey, "Bigots or Informed Observers? Vicious Aid for Vicious Times PERIN GÜREL, University of Notre Dame “History’s unfinished business will recycle itself,” the exiled Iranian narrator of Call Me Zebra reminds herself and her readers.1 Like the heritage of violence messing up our progressive visions of what the present should be, the current era’s viciousness keeps interfering with my research – my attempts to access the past in the form of old texts and far-flung archives. I want to hide in History, but history grips me. Not only is this era’s viciousness inescapable, ignoring it with whatever privilege I can muster is itself a form of violence. I work on the cultural history of US–Southwest Asia relations. Focusing on Turkey and Iran, my research foregrounds clashing nationalisms as well as transna- tional flows. My studies depend heavily on Persian and Turkish texts, archives, and interviewees I can only access in Turkey or Iran. In the last few years, my access to these two countries (and beloved family and friends) has been repeatedly restricted by travel bans, visa disputes, and fears of war breaking out. While no one administra- tion has ever held a monopoly over US imperialism, the types of war waged on the region seemed to multiply and overlap with the Trump administration, with economic warfare, trade wars, armed violence, structural violence, and cultural violence over- laying each other at a dizzying rate. Local authoritarianisms, too, intensified in this period, often justified as a response to imperialist meddling or as a well-warranted turn against the ravages of a neoliberal system constructed by and for “the West.” More- over, the symbolic burden of being an immigrant from “the Middle East” has somehow increased since the immediate post-9/11 period. -
