TheseRulesareaconsolidationofthepreviousManualsanddocumentsintoonecomprehensive document(primarilytheManualfortheCollegeofArms,andtheRulesforHeraldicRegistration). See AppendixA formoreinformation. Forthepurposesoftheserules,theterm"herald"shallrefertoanypersonactinginaheraldicmanner,regardless ofrank. Aforwardby SirNigelSeymour “Blazon”Therearetwopartsofaheraldicdevice,theBLAZONandthe EMBLAZON.TheBLAZON(rhymeswith"raisin")isthewordsusedtodescribethe EMBLAZON-theactualpicture.Thepartthatisregistered(i.e.copyrighted)bythe CollegeofArmsistheEMBLAZON.TheEMBLAZONiswhatischeckedagainstfor conflict,nottheBLAZON.Blazonisbasicallyahighlyspecializedjargonthatallows youtoaccuratelydescribeapictureinthehighlystylizedartformofHeraldry.Itis possibletoblazonaparticularemblazonanynumberofdifferentways.Example:The armsof:Thisisusuallyblazoned",threeleopards"withoutanyother modifiers.Theheraldicterm""doesnotrefertotheactual(Panthera pardus),buttotheheraldicbeast"passantguardant".Ifyouwishedtobeprecise,you wouldblazonitas"Gules,inthreepassantguardantor".Because"aleopard"is thesameas"alionpassantguardantor",youcanuseheraldicshorthandifyouwishto.In thisspecialcase,thearrangement(inpale)isnotspecifiedinalotoftextsbecausemost writersassumethattheirreaders(otherheraldists)willhavesomefamiliaritywiththe armsofEngland.Sincethesearmsaresofamous,theyareoftenfoundinthereferences simplyas"England".TheyareacommoninBritisharmory;youwilloften findsuchas"QuarterlyAncientandEngland"(thearmsofEdwardIII).If we"marry"theofTerreNeuvetotheQueenofUmbriatoproduceanewChapter, theunifiedarmsmightbeblazoned"QuarterlyTerreNeuveandUmbria".Heraldryisfull ofdefaultvaluesthatmaketheblazonshorter.Manychargeshavedefaulttincturesand postures.LionsareOr.Elephantsare.Leavesare.Carnivoresarebydefault Rampant,mostherbivoresarePassant.MostbirdsareDisplayed.ToolsandWeaponsare bydefaultinthe"ready-to-use"posture:Swordsarepointup,arrowsarepointdown.It's notnecessarytosay"Alionrampantor";onecouldeasilysay"alion".InAdria,we prefertospecifythetincturesforclarity,butwhenyou'reexploringreferences,youmay findtheseextremeshorthandsinuse.Itpaystobeaware.Wealsodiscouragetheuseof theword"proper"inAdrianblazonry.Theword"proper"isusedtoindicatethedefault tinctureoftheitem.Unlesstheitemisbydefault(suchasatreeoradog),it'sbest tospecifythetincture.Thisextrabitofverbageispreferabletoaninexperiencedherald notknowingthe"proper"tinctureofachargeandgettingconfusedorproducingan incorrectemblazon.Therearepreferredwaysofblazoningitems.Whileitis*possible* touse"arayonny"asapotentialblazonfor"a",itisnot*desirable*todoso. ThewaytheSunappearsinheraldryisvaried.AnyMulletof7ormorepointsis consideredheraldicallyindistinctfromaSun.(seeNote1)Thiscanbeaseven-pointed ,roundelwithaserratededge,orthe"standard"depictionofaroundelwith8points

Thephrase"heraldicallyindistinct"meansthat,totheheraldiceye,twoobjectsare essentiallythesame.Thenameofthechargeisthatobject's"value",notitsexact depiction.Tinctureoperatesthesameway."Gules"isnotaspecificshadeof,itisthe VALUEofRed.Gulescanbe,red-,fire-enginered,deep,rust, oreven.ToHeraldry,theexactshadedoesn'tmatter,thevaluedoes.Iknowthat ifyouareanartist,thisgoesagainstyourentirebeing.ButshallwechantNigel'sMantra again?"HeraldryisNOTREALLIFE."Whatworksfortincturesworksforchargesas well.Whileitispossibletowrite"asun"or"aroundelrayonny"forthesameemblazon, bothofthosetermsfitintheheraldicvalueofSun.Therefore,itisbesttousethe standardvaluenameintheblazon. Note:Iftwochargesare"heraldicallydistinct",theyarefreefromconflict.Having differentnamesdoesnotmaketwochargesheraldicallydistinct;a"chough"anda "raven"arevisuallydissimilarenoughtobeblazoneddifferently(thechoughhasred beakandlegs,plussomeextra-curlyfeathers),buttheyarestillconsideredtobe heraldicallyindistinct."Argent,threechoughs"directlyconflictswith"Argent,three ravens".Conversely(orperversely),inAdriawetendtobeabitmoreexplicitincertain areas.Theoldtextsmayuse"leopard"for"lionpassantguardant",butwetendtoprefer touse"lionpassantguardant".Why?Isn't"leopard"shorterthan"lionpassantguardant"? Yes,butinthiscase,theneedforclarityoverridestheneedtokeepblazonsshort. "Leopard"fallsinthesameheraldicvalueas"lion",soforourowninternalconsistency, weuse"lion"withthemodifiers"passantguardant".Nowhere'sthe:whendoing conflictchecking,it'seasiertoscantheiftheblazonsareconsistentwiththe headersasmuchaspossible.Whendescribingamane-lesslion,itispossibletouseeither "catamount","panther","lioness","mountainlion","cougar",and"puma"forthesame creature.Forconsistency,weuse"catamount"asthatisthemostcommonHeraldicterm (also,thelastthreeareuniquetotheNewWorld,and"panther"isalsousedfora particularheraldicmonster).That'sthelogicbehindblazoninginAdria.Note1 :Thehumanmindcaneasilydistinguishataglancebetweengroupsof1,2,3,4,5,6, andgreater-than-six.Formostpeople,anygroupofgreaterthansixitemshastobe countedtobedistinguishedfromanothergroupofgreaterthansixitems.TheMedievals werenotstupid;theyjustdidn'tknowWHYtheyknewthis.EverreadWatershipDown? PRESENTATION IndividualsmustpresenttheirregistrationformstotheirlocalMinisterofArms orotherdesignatedheraldicofficer.TheImperialSovereignofArmsandImperial Deputieswillnotacceptdirectpresentations,exceptunderspecialcircumstances. ANIMALS,PLANTS,TRADEMARKS,ETC. Chargesofanimals,plants,orartifactsthatwerenotknownin duringtheAdrianperiod(1066-1603)willnotbepermitted C. REGISTRATIONFORMS FORMSUSED AllpresentationsmustbeontheregistrationformsissuedbytheImperialSovereignof Arms. a. Variantstotheofficialformsmustbepre-approvedbytheImperial SovereignofArms. b. Electronicpresentations areacceptableONLYiftheproposalform wascompletelyfilledout,signedanddatedbeforebeingscanned intoelectronicformat. c. Computer-generatedimagesmaybesubstitutedfortheoutlinesonthe officialforms,aslongastheyconformtothesamesizeandgeneral shapeasthatontheform. SHAPES TheshapesontheregistrationformsareonlyfortheconvenienceoftheCollege ofArms.Individualsandgroupsmaydisplaydevicesandbadgesonanyshape theysochoosethatwasusedintheAdrianPeriodfordisplayingarmoryandis allowedbytheindividualorgroup’ssumptuaryright. E. COMPLETEFORMS Formsmustbefilledoutcompletely, therearenooptionalfields. Any formsnotcompletelyfilledoutwillbereturned. 1. Thefield marked"Signature"mustbefilledinwiththepresenter’smundane signature.

TheImperialMinisterandDeputiesshouldnotacceptanincompleteform. Itistheresponsibilityofthelocalministertoensuretheformiscomplete. F. COLORS Registrationformsmustbecoloredinclearprimarycolors . 1. Imagesonproposalformsmustbecoloredusingonlythedistinctcolors; ,,,RED,,and . Tints,shades,pastelsoranyothervariationsofcolorarenotallowed . 2. Computergeneratedcolorformswillbeacceptedsolongasthecolorsare clearanduniquelydiscernableasthosedescribedabove . 3. Imagesonproposalformsmustbecoloredininkusingthecolorslisted above.Thepreferredbrandofmarkersis“CrayolaClassicColors” 4. Becauseoftheimpermanenceofthemedia,formscoloredwithcrayons, coloredpencils,orpastelswillnot beaccepted. G. LOCALLEVELPROCESSOFREGISTRATION 1. EachpresentationgiventothelocalChapterMinistersofArmsmust includethefollowingcopies: a. Three(3)full-colorcopies. b. Copiesofallapplicabledocumentationtoaccompanyeachofthe Fullcolorcopies. 2. LocalMinistersofArmsshallkeepatleastone(1)colorcopyinthe presenter’slocalfile,alongwithatleastone(1)copyofanyapplicable documentation. 3. LocalMinistersofArmshavetheprerogativeofrequestingadditional copies,Iftheydeemitnecessary. 4. LocalMinistersofArmsshallcheckthepresentationsforthefollowing: a. Formscompletelyfilledout b. Propernumberofcopies c. Correctcolors d. ObviousviolationsoftheGuidelinesforPresentations e. Basicconflictcheckagainstthearmorialandordinary 5. Presentationsmayonlybereturnedatthelocallevelforfailinganyofthe abovechecks. 6. LocalMinistersofArmsareresponsibleforcommunicatingwith presentersduringtheregistrationprocesstokeepthemupdatedonthe statusoftheirpresentation. a. Local Ministers of Arms shall notify the presenter of the

LocalMinistersofArmsshallnotifythepresenterofany suggestionsmadebytheISoAformakingareturnedproposal passable. 7. MinistersofArmswilleachsenda"letterofreport"totheImperial SovereignofArmsordesignatedDeputyduebythefifth(5th)dayofeach month,containingthefollowinginformation: a. Alistofallpresentationsgiventothelocalofficersincethelast letterofreport. b. Thecorrectnumberofcopiesforallpresentationslisted. c. Arecountingofanyheraldicactivitythatmonth. d. Iftherewasnoheraldicactivityand/ortherewerenopresentations thatmonth,astatementofthatstatus. e. ThestructureofaheraldicreportisdescribedinappendixB.of thisdocument. H. IMPERIALLEVELPROCESSOFREGISTRATION 1. RegionalDeputyImperialSovereignsofArms RegionalDeputyImperialSovereignsofArmsshalleachsenda“Letterof Report”totheImperialSovereignofArms;whichisduebythetenth (10th)dayofeachmonth,containingthefollowinginformation: Alistofallpresentationsreceivedsincelastreportwhichcontainsthe following: a. ThenamesofthePresentationscheckedforconflict. b. Theresultsoftheregionalconflictcheckforeachproposal. c. Themundanename(s),persona(s),estate(s)orothertype(s)of registrant(s)oneachproposalformprocessed. d. AlistofproposalsreturnedtothelocalMoAsincelastreport. e. AlistofproposalssenttotheImperialSovereignofArmssince lastreport. f. AlistingofreportingChapters. g. AlistingofNON-reportingChapters. 2. TheImperialSovereignofArms TheImperialSovereignofArmsshallcheckthepresentationsforthe aboveinformationandforthefollowingadditionalinformation: a. AthoroughcheckforviolationsoftheGuidelinesfor Presentations. b. Athoroughconflictcheckagainstthearmorialandordinary. c. Ifapresentationcontainsdocumentation,checktoensureit adequatelydescribestheelementinquestion.

Whentwo(2)presentationswhichconflictagainsteachotherare receivedbytheImperialSovereignofArmsinone(1)cycle, preferenceshallbegiventothatwhichwasreceivedfirst. e. Ifanyquestionsarise,theImperialSovereignofArmsshall consultwiththemembersoftheImperialCollegeofArmsto resolvethem. f. Ifapresentationsatisfiesalloftherequirementsandpassesallof thechecks,itshallthenberegisteredandpublishedinaLoRR. h. Anypresentationnotsatisfyingalloftherequirementsornot passingallofthechecksshallbereturnedbytheImperial SovereignofArms. i. Eachitemreturnedforconflictorstyleshallbeaccompaniedby suggestionsformakingtheitemcorrectforregistration. 3. LettersofRegistrationandReturn. a. TheImperialSovereignofArmswillsendoutaregularLetterof RegistrationandReturntotheCollegeofArmsandtheEmpireof Adriacontainingalloftheregisteredandreturneditemsforthat periodforallareas. b. Nosubmissionwillbeconsideredofficiallyregistereduntil publishedwithinaLoRR. c. Includedintheseletterswillbeanychangestotheserules, includinganyprecedentssetandanyelementsthatthrough adequatedocumentationhasbeenmadeavailableforregistration. d. TheImperialSovereignofArmshasninety(90)daysfromreceipt ofthelettersofreportinaparticularmonthtopublishtheLetters ofRegistrationandReturn. e. LocalMinistersofArmsshallthennotifythepresentersoftheir registrationsorreturnsandupdateeachregistrant’shardcopyfile. I. ADMINISTRATIVEPOLICY The College of Arms shall process no proposals at the Imperial level duringthemonthsofOctoberandNovember.Thisistoallowtimeforthe changeoverbetweenimperialadministrationsandto help ensure that no proposalsarelostduringtransition.Localministersofarmsshallcontinue toprocessandacceptheraldicbusinessduringthistime.Innowaydoes thispolicymeanthataministerofarmsmayskiptheir monthly reports duringtransition.

INDIVIDUALANDESTATES Individuals,estates(House,Barony,County,orMarch)andotherlocal armigerousentities(IEguilds)mayregisteruptosix(6)piecesofregistered heraldry(Devices,andbadges). 1. Noconflictiscalledwitharmorytheregistrantalreadypossesses. Sincethesystemofconflictisinplacetopreventtwoindividualsfrom havingarmorythatistoosimilar,itdoesnotapplytoindividualswhoare registeringbadgeswiththesamemotifastheirarms. 2. Untiltheminorchildis13yearsold,theywillonlyhavethesetwopieces ofheraldry.Anymorepiecesofheraldrythanthese,andtheparentor guardianwillhavethesubmissionschargedtothem. Atthetimetheminorchildreaches13yearsold,theywillbeableto submittheirownproposalsandifdesiredreleaseorkeepthearmsthat havebeensubmittedbytheirparent/guardian. B. CHARTEREDCHAPTERS TheImperium,Domains,andchaptershavenolimitonthenumberofitems registered. C. OWNERSHIPOFESTATEARMORY(A.E.BylawsWritB.25.) Thearmorialdeviceofanestateshallbeconsideredthepropertyoftheestate,not theChapterandshallfollowthemajorityofitsmembersshouldtheychangetheir Chaptermembership,orasotherwiseprovidedforintheCharteroftheEstate,Ifa clearmajoritydonotselectthesameChapter,itshallbedecidedbyamajority voteofthemembers. Ifavoteistaken: •OnlymembersoftheEstateatthetimeofchangeinmembershipare eligibletovote. •Effortmustbemadetonotifyalleligiblemembers •TheRulingNobleoftheEstateatthetimeofchangeofmembership shallconductthevoteandnotifytherespectivesubdivisions •Amajorityofvotescastshalldecidethequestion D. GENERALOWNERSHIP TheCollegeofArmsrecognizesthefollowingrightsofarmorialdevice Ownership; • Individualarmoryisownedbythepersonwhosenameandsignature appearsontheproposalform. • EstateArms;asdefinedinIEWB.25.RefertoArticleII.D.ofthis manualforreference. • Chapterarmsareownedsolelybythechaptertowhichthearmsare registeredregardlessoftheindividualwhoprocessedthepaperwork.A

E. PROTECTEDARMORY 1. Allarmshavingmettherequirementsputforthinthismanualand beendulypublishedinaLetterofRegistrationandReturn. 2. Theprimaryarms/ofanyDuchy,Archduchy,Kingdomand theEmpireofAdria. 3. The“Worthies”ofTheAdrianEmpire F. ARMORY,NOTVERBALDESCRIPTION Apieceofarmoryisregisteredandprotected,nottheverbaldescriptionusedto recordthatarmory.Theuseofdifferentterminologytodescribetwo(2)designs thatarevisuallysimilardoesnotaffectanypotentialforconflictthatmayexist.
